Gather βround kids: I had a coworker mention to me this morning that itβs impossible to get grease stains out of fabric. As a former chemistry minor who worked two years under the table doing housekeeping and who generally tends to be a fucking disaster, I am here to tell everyone that it absolutely is not impossible, in case this is a widespread belief. Here are a few of my favorite cleaning stain removers that I always have at home.
Here are some options:
A Tideβ’ pen.
Iβm a generic kinda lady. I hate promoting brands 99% of the time. BUT if you catch absolutely any kind of stain before it gets ground in, you can get most of it out with one of these babies. Iβve tested it on blood, chocolate, coffee, guacamole, pizza sauce, red wine on, on that one time i accidentally slopped some oil I was supposed to be using on antiques onto a fancy rug (also an antique but not the one I was gunning for). If youβre washing something delicate, pump it onto your finger a couple of times and gently rub it in. Iβm not sure what they put in these things but Iβm pretty sure itβs an arcane secret.
Dish soap
Granted, this is a little trickier for upholstery/carpet, but it can still be done using a rag, some water, and some patience. But for clothing, just pour some soap on the stain and rub it in under cold running water.
Absolutely any clear alcohol is your new best friend
You know the old βwhite wine to clean redβ trick? Well, this is its updated sister I like to call βyou, too, can use coconut rum to get red jello shot out of your nice white dressβ. Itβs a nice party trick. Straight vodka works even better. For every day situations involving any kind of alcohol-related spills (including markers)βand especially work situationsβrubbing alcohol is ideal. To quote another adage, this one from every chemistry teacher you will ever meet, βlike dissolves like.β
Hydrogen Peroxide
It can get blood out of absolutely anything, including your mattress. It reacts with the iron in hemoglobin, which breaks down the molecule, causing it to lose its red color. So make sure youβre not using a cast iron skillet to wash your period underwear in.
Vinegar
This will dissolve lime buildup overnight. Fill a bag, tie it around your showerhead, and presto. You can also use it to scrub the area around your sink and to break up any buildup in pipes. (Limeawayβ’ is for rich people.)Β
Baking soda
This is great if you have a pet or child who peed on the carpet. Just cover the area, wait until it dries, and vacuum it up. The longer you leave it, the better it will do at removing the smell. Itβs also good removing mild odors from a small space, like a fridge or a laundry hamper.Β
Charcoal
This is your heavy duty odor killer. A little goes a long way. In chemistry, activated charcoal is used as a purifier in reactions, and in medicine, it can be used to treat mild poisoning/overdoses. In your car that smells like someone died because you forgot you had potatoes in the trunk for six months? All you need are regular old charcoal briquettes. Stick a couple handfuls in a flat box and the smell will be gone overnight. Guaranteed. For larger areas, just use more charcoal.
Baby shampoo will get oil stains out of clothing even if itβs been washed and dried several times. Β Shampoo is formulated to remove oil from organic stuff.
Iβve been working on a Crowley plush for a few weeks now. Heβs a redesign of my old Crowley from four years ago. Heβs not finished yet, but I thought it might be nice to show my progress and talk about my process a bit. More below!
The first step was redesigning the embroidery. Thankfully I didnβt have to do too much. I gave the snake tattoo a red belly, elongated the eye pupils, and thickened the mouth. Crowleyβs eyes are actually a triple color gradient, which is a pain to make in the software I use.
Next, I sewed the plush together. Before I started these, I decided I wanted them to be scented. (Macintosh Apple for Crowley & Brandied Pear for Aziraphale). I added a zipper pouch to the back and it only took three attempts because I donβt make these very often and I definitely didnβt forget how. Yes, the plushies have fruit embroidery on their butts.

β¨Star Nipplesβ¨
Post hair cut. I used a long pile faux fur for Crowleyβs hair, shaved it down, then styled it with product made specifically for synthetic fibers. It took a few hours. Andβ¦Yes, he do got a booty.
So why the star nips and butt? The truth isβ¦I just think itβs funny and I recently got into kpop plush dolls, which have very silly and interesting embroidery. This was a little experimentation with that particular style.
The butt is thread sculpted the same way paws are sculpted on stuffed animals and Crowleyβs blushing cheeks are made with real blush. Itβs washable and fades over time, which is perfect if you donβt want to permanently stain the plush with paint for example. If it starts to fade just add more blush!
So thatβs it for the actual plush. I oversimplified things, but the process is very complex. It took a few months to design the base pattern, vectors, and embroidery. All of that requires testing and if something doesnβt come out quite right, then itβs back to the drawing board with the pattern. All in all, I wasted a lot of fabric.
Next up is the shirt! I began by practicing the placket and I think I went through 4 different methods before settling on the one that would work best for this size.
This is the βtest fittingβ. It looked awful and didnβt fit at all. I forgot to mention the material is a thin rayon/spandex knit. By this time I think I had made the shirt 6 times. To be honest, I donβt consider myself being that great at making clothes, especially tiny plush clothes, and this fabric was very challenging to work with.
My mistake with this shirt was the pattern. I used the same shirt pattern I designed four years ago for my old Crowley plush, with minimal changes. It ended up way too baggy and with the placket it didnβt fit around the neck. It was back to the drawing board. I had to redesign the entire shirt from scratch.
Hereβs what I came up with after the redesign! Something somewhat simple ended up being very stressful! I should also mention that I finish all of the raw edges for my plush clothes and that takes a bit of time to do.
The shirts fit perfectly! For the socks, I bought new ones from the dollar store, cut them up, and sewed them to size for plushy feet!
Pants next! Theyβre made from a stretch denim. I also ran into another mistake here. I forgot to prewash the fabric before making them. I always do this with apparel fabrics due to shrinkage if they need to be washed later on and especially because of dye transfer. Iβve learned the hard way that dark dye can stain lighter colors of plush minky if worn long enough. Prewashing helps eliminate excess dyes.
I hand washed the pants and my extra denim, then left them to air dry for 24 hours.
It worked! The pants still fit! For the closure, the fly has a soft, flexible velcro sewn in. I hand stitched a black snap to the waist band.
Thatβs it for now! Tumblr says Iβm at my limit for pictures so Iβll make a part three later!
We canβt forget Crowleyβs iconic snake belt! The above pictures are a test belt in scrap felt. The snake head is SO TINY! Itβs about the size of a US nickel. Over my many years of sewing, Iβve learned that the smaller something is the harder it is to sew. There is really no room for error and the stitching has to be precise.

And here is the finalized belt! Itβs so cute! I glued little black rhinestones on it for the eyes. Thereβs a magnet sewn inside the tail and head so itβs very easy to close. I did make the belt loops a little too tight and I had some trouble getting the snake through. I suppose plush making wouldnβt be fun if everything went according to plan!

Iβll talk about the shoes in a new post. Theyβre so complicated that I think they deserve their own section.
I hope everyone is enjoying my progress so far! Iβm probably making it seem easy, but Iβve put a lot of time and effort into this plush. Itβs been exhausting at times, but my mama didnβt raise no quitter!
This is my least favorite part. Itβs so time consuming. Actually, this entire plush has been very time consuming. Worth it though.
This is what the shoes look like when sewn, before attaching them to the inner sole. The main material is reptile print upholstery vinyl. Itβs stiff and not easy to sew at this size, but the end product looks great. I had to customize the zipper a bit. It was originally a 4 inch zipper. I cut it down to size, which is less than 2 inches, and used a pair of tweezers to remove the stop and reattach it to where it needed to be. The second pic is how the plushy foot fits inside. Note that they donβt reach the front of the shoe.
Here are the shoes when theyβre attached to the inner sole. This pair belongs to the 1941 Crowley I made. I made a few minor modifications to the new pair. I also forgot to take pictures of the inner sole and the pillow inserts.
Remember how the plushy foot doesnβt reach the front of the shoes? I made two little crescent shaped pillows out of scrap fabric and stuffed them into the shoe toes.
The inner sole is made out of corkboard with hard chipboard glued on top. After it dried, I fit it in the shoe in, stretched the edges around the bottom of the corkboard, and hot glued the edges down. Itβs hard to explain without pictures as a guide, but if you look up shoemaking videos on YouTube youβll see what I mean.
If youβre not confident the glue will hold you can use a stapler to secure it. Note: The staples may go through the chipboard and you might be able to feel them if you stick your finger in the shoe. If this happens donβt worry. You can cut a piece of felt or non fraying fabric of your choice to stick in the shoe. I used alova suede cloth.
This is the part I hate. Well, hate is a strong word. Making the soles is very difficult for me because it aggravates my carpal tunnel and I have neuralgia in my arms. This causes me to have grip and movement issues in my hand, especially my thumbs.
Anyway, I carved the soles from 10mm black EVA foam with a hot knife. Then I used a Dremel to shape the bottoms into a cute heel. The shoe must be inset into the foam a bit. I shaved out an area in the top for this.
This gets very messy. Make sure you wear a mask if you do this. Preferably gloves and safety goggles too. But as you can see, the shoe fits nicely in the inset.
After I carved the soles, I sanded them down with a 220/320 sandpaper. Then I blasted them with my heat gun to set them.
The above pic is after I glued the shoes in with black e6000 glue. They have to be clamped down until the glue cures which takes around 24 hours. There is a piece of thick styrene under each sole to prevent the clamps from making indentations in the EVA foam.
Check out those shoes! They look so good! After the glue is set I taped up the shoes with painters tape, only leaving the soles exposed. Then I spray painted the soles with black Plastidip to give them that rubbery look and feel.
What a stylish looking demon! π When Crowleyβs shoes are on he stands great on his own!

The vest! I made it from a pleather spandex and hand stitched a couple buttons on later.
Crowleyβs scarf thing is pretty basic. Itβs a gray shoestring with cord caps superglued to the ends. I used a jewelry loop to hook them to the tassels.
Last section! I forgot to post the scent pack and a few other things so here are the pics! Youβll have to excuse the low quality. I forgot to take individual pictures and took screenshots from a video I made instead.

working with textiles is a trap. first they lure you in with knitting. then you pick up crochet (understandable enough). next you start getting curious in fiber. you learn how to spin (okay thatβs a bit extra). weaving is cool, right? you now own a loom. heck, while weβre at it, why not starting making your own clothes (this is getting out of hand)? spinning is no longer enough for you β you need something stronger. you learn how to dye (stop iβm begging). dye is fun, but itβd be nice to have your own source of fiber. you are now a shepherd.

Just as a heads up, this pattern is not really recommended for beginners. There is not a whole lot of explanation of the basic techniques, and it requires a fair bit of precision, two types of fusible interfacing, and an assumption that you can keep a consistent seam allowance and do some hand sewing and know when to sew things right sides together and such.
I am not promising anything, different methods will yield different results, I have never made a pattern exactly as it was written and neither should you. If you want something the same as the next person, go to the shops.
Actually, nevermind, this is a quarantine craft, stay home.
That fabric is stunning and yes, technically you could, although I imagine it will be quite difficult to turn right side out with an interfacing that stiff, so I would recommend doing a bias bound finish rather than bagging the lining. I am also not sure how breathable that stuff is, so it might pay to add some venting holes either under the beak if it is for fashion or under the eyes if you are hoping to wear it as a protective mask.
