one of my friends in a discord server was talking about how they were nervous about their first scheduled acupuncture appointment. another friend offered to do a tarot reading for them. sent this picture.

They say comparison is the thief of joy, or as my therapist likes to say, "To compare is to despair." However! The other night, Danny (my middle school gifted and talented program rival, and a person I swore I would marry one day, until I confessed in high school and he told me he was gay) was over for dinner.
And we had an interesting conversation about comparing ourselves to others, and then quitting that thing we were comparing ourselves on. I mentioned that Danny was the reason I quit piano. And Danny was like, "What? Since when? That's so sad. Now I feel bad."
And I was like, "No no no, don't feel bad. I mean, it wouldn't be your fault either way, but you didn't make me quit piano because, like, 'Oh, you were so good and I'd never be as good as you, so I might as well quit.' It was more that I could learn Chopin or Mozart or whatever it was when it was taught to me at piano lessons…"
"But you would come over after school, sit down at my piano, and start playing stuff like the Pirates of the Caribbean theme which you had arranged by ear and taught to yourself. You were composing original pieces."
"And like, in a million years I would not have an intrinsic desire to just, do music theory shit. So seeing you do all of that unprompted, for fun, and being amazing at it, helped me realize that the parts of music that fascinate the people who love it… were not fascinating to me. Really, I just played the piano because I felt like I was supposed to, and because I was decent at it. So that same year, I quit."
And then Danny said something really interesting. He was like, "Oh, I see what you're saying. Then in that case, Patrick Dugan made me quit trumpet.
And I was like, "Uh, didn't he play upright bass?"
Now for context, remember that Danny was my gifted child rival. So basically everything he did, he was extremely, extremely good at. In high school, he was playing trumpet in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, like, downtown. And Patrick played bass at the CYSO as well.
So Danny was like, "Dugan made me realize that I didn't actually enjoy performing at a high level. High school band is one thing, but at a professional level, your obligation is to play it correctly every single time. And while I could do it, it made me feel like playing trumpet less."
"Dugan lived for the knife edge of performance. The pressure made it more exciting for him. I saw that and was like, 'Well, there's someone who has qualities that allow him to thrive as a professional musician. I do not have those qualities.' So I quit."
And I found this conversation extremely interesting. Like, it turns out that it's actually pretty difficult to tell the difference between something you're good at doing, and something you're meant to be doing. And in a way, even though comparing yourself to someone else can be very dangerous, it can also be very illuminating.
I know pottery is for me, because when I look at people whose pottery I think is better, or whose content is more successful… it might make me want to step up my game, and acknowledge that I'm not as good as I want to be. But it never makes me feel like quitting. I know I am in the right craft because I'd be doing it whether or not I was good and whether or not I was successful. I just love making pottery! And that's low-key the coolest feeling ever.

I love how Zohran Mamdani is wearing a suit everywhere. And if he has anything else he puts it ON TOP of the suit. A basketball jersey. A high-vis vest. All worn over the suit. He’s like the mayor character in a cartoon who’s always dressed as The Mayor. If I didn’t know who he was and he biked past me in NYC I’d be like holy shit was that the mayor
Not to bring the serious to a very fun post, but this reaction is exactly what Mamdani is working for with his image, because in a very real way the most effective way for him to be The Mayor is if he looks like The Mayor.
This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.
Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.
Adding these tags from @haunted-stranger-garden bc they illustrate this brilliantly

Did I just employ the "Treat Them Like You are A Kindergarten Teacher Again" method with my insurance company today? I surely did. Did it work? Probably better than intended because I made an actual doctor feel contrite.
So, my insurance has been trying to not cover my SNRI because it is new on the market and no generic available yet, so pricey.
I apply for a refill and the request gets locked for review. Again. For the 3rd time.
This time I call and immediately ask to speak to the actual doctor making these clinical decisions. Very politely. Must be a slow day because they allow it.
ME: [Teacher voice] I'm calling in regards to the SNRI you have placed a lock on. Why was this decision made?
DOC: Well, there are dozens of other medications on the market in that tier, and far cheaper for you and [insurer]. We have sent a request to your doctor to consider alternatives.
ME: I am aware of that. So, can you do me a HUGE favor and look up my prescription history really quickly and tell me how many SSRIs and SNRIs were only filled once in 2022 for me, showing they were poorly tolerated?
DOC: It looks like eight.
ME: Great job! Now, can you please look at my genetic test for psychiatric drug tolerance and tell me how many medications are listed in the safe category?
DOC: Two.
ME: Awesome! Now, can you tell me what type that other drug is that I'm not taking?
DOC: Yeah, totally, it's an MAOI.
ME: That's correct, you're really knowledgeable! Should I be taking something as dangerous as an MAOI with my other medications, or even just in general?
DOC: It's contraindicated for sure.
ME: It is! So true! So, last question since you've been incredibly smart and helpful. Is it less expensive for [insurer] to pay out for the medication knowing they already get a huge manufacturer discount anyway, or is it more expensive for them to pay for me to need potentially long-term inpatient psychiatric care?
DOC: I'll clear the code, ma'am and flag it as medically necessary. I'm sorry about this.
ME: I appreciate you SO MUCH. You have a great day now.
