Heat Ray
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
This video was posted in a lovely review someone left on my Ghibli Desktop Theme - it shows their gorgeous video-wallpaper of ghibli scenes paired with the desktop icons from my set! ❤️🔥🌰🌱🎀✨ This is so pretty to watch (ฅ́ ˘ ฅ̀) ♡
(the review was on etsy where I no longer have the ghibli listing, so sadly I can't find or post the credit, but thank you kind person who left a nice review! <3)
Are you frustrated you can't leave second kudos on AO3? or third kudos? or whatever-who's-counting kudos?
Well, have I got the html for you!
Plop any of these in a comment (by copy&pasting the code) to make an author's day and show your appreciation!
Second kudos: <img src="https://i.ibb.co/tHMjbb6/second-kudos.png" alt="second kudos">
Third kudos: <img src="https://i.ibb.co/52bggQH/third-kudos.png" alt="third kudos">
nth kudos: <img src="https://i.ibb.co/6y7qGtC/nth-kudos.png" alt="nth kudos">
yet another kudos: <img src="https://i.ibb.co/wKtcj0s/yet-another-kudos.png" alt="yet another kudos">
It will look something like this (and will be transparent with white outline on dark backgrounds):
Feel free to spread and use these as much as you like! (and if you have ideas for other variations, let me know ✌️)
So happy to see people enjoying these and spreading the love 💖
UPDATE with some suggestions from the replies!
From requests: cookie kudos — you've already left kudos here — should be sleeping kudos
HTML codes under the cut.
Leave an author extra kudos!!
I can't wait to use all of these ^_^
As someone who has been lucky enough to receive some of these I assure you they are a delight to behold and make the author very happy.
Japanese Language Reading Resources
I needed to put all my reading resources in one place lol
Tadoku - free books from beginner to advanced aimed at language learners. The books from level 0 - 4 contain furigana.
YomuJP - More free japanese graded reading material. N6 is the easiest and N1 is the hardest. Contains audio, furigana and pictures.
Jgrpg Sakura - Japanese graded reading material. You need to create an account first though
Watanoc - Web magazine aimed at language learners in easy japanese. N5-N3. Contains audio, pictures and you can hover over unknown words to reveal the meaning.
Soseki Product - This website is dedicated to the works of Natsume Sōseki and it's also aimed at language learners so there's furigana, audio and translation. These novels are from the 1900s so it might be a bit difficult but I think it's really fun
MeikaSensei - Blog posts aimed at beginners. There's beginner versions and intermediate versions of the same post. Contains furigana
Bunsuke - Contains excerpts from books with translations and vocabulary lists. Also has links to the books used. Made by a fellow language learner :)
Ehon - Picture books aimed for 0-6 year olds. Doesn't seem to contain kanji. Some books contain audio
Lingual ninja - This website is for learning hiragana/katakana/grammar/vocab/kanji but it also has a folktales section that contains audio, vocab lists and optional furigana. There's also youtube videos of each story available
yomou syosetu - Over a million free novels! I believe a lot of it is user-submitted works
Syosetsu - Similar to the above.
Bookwalker (jp) - You can read the first few volumes of manga for free here. There's also light novels and doujinshi
Aozora Bunko - digital library that contains a lot of out of copyright books
Note - User submitted posts about various topics
Easy NHK News - News in easy japanese. Contains furigana.
NHK News - The news. In Japanese
Apps
Pibo - Picture books aimed at children
Todaii - Aimed at language learners. News with furigana and pop up dictionary.
Satori Reader - Paid
Yomu Yomu - First 3 chapters are free on edit: some stories!
If you have any more recommendations, tell me!

may i ask what you’ve been using to learn japanese? No pressure to reply, I’m just curious and looking for potential learning resources :] (wow in hindsight the phrasing here looks weird. anyways i hope you have a lovely day :D)
Thanks for asking!
Mostly I learned spoken Japanese from watching anime and then my writing and reading was more formalized by taking classes in college. I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn from more formal sources than anime; I think there are a lot of nuances and formalities that you should know by default when interacting with people in the language that don’t come across clearly at all in just anime.
I do have a few useful apps for learning though!
Kana is good if you’re a complete beginner at the language. It drills you on hiragana and katakana, for reading, writing, and listening.
Todaii is good for practicing reading, but quite a jump in difficulty. If you’re on Todaii, you should be fluent with kana already; this is mostly a tool for learning context and pronunciation of kanji through texts. It has news articles and practice problems, with some having the kanji labeled with helpful yomigana.
Nihongo gets the gold star from me in terms of recommendations— I use it all the time! It’s just a dictionary, but it’s probably the best arranged and easiest to understand Japanese dictionary I’ve used. It’s also completely offline so you can use it without internet.
bunny doodle!!!! hi!!!!
