Hi, I'm Tayber! Writer, editor, and fandom old-ish. I value kindness, effort, nuance, good faith takes, and taking opportunities for growth.
I spend a lot of time examining writing, queerness, storytelling, censorship, purity culture, the closet, community-building, and fandom. I'm deeply interested in the way that these things intersect, and the role that censorship and morality policing play in oppression.
You can expect to see me reveling in a wide range of film, art, books, video games, poetry, meta, fanfiction, and fanart. I love all forms of storytelling & expression, across all mediums and genres. I don't just read things — I like to read into them.

I didn’t know much, but I knew that I was the hero of this story. It all just felt like the exact moment that my entire life had been building up to: all of the reading, and dreaming, and loneliness, and magic. All of it. And then, well, and then this story actually happened, and I started to realize the truth.
It turns out that in Drone mode, you can focus on a la living being and the camera will follow it. I think that thanks to this, you can make very high-quality videos!

The best thing I ever found at a thrift store was unfortunately not for sale and I regret missing this chance every day. We were dropping off some donations, and as we were driving away, I could see in the pile of stuff the workers were sorting through, in the back leaned against the wall, a handpainted canvas of the burning Elmo meme.
I can't imagine why someone would donate this. I dream of having this on my wall. Maybe one day I'll take a stab at painting it myself.
Terry Pratchett's take on The Little Matchgirl in The Hogfather is both devastating and incredibly up lifting. Here's the thing, I've read The Little Matchgirl too many times and thought, 'hey, that's kind of fucked up. Why didn't anyone save her?'
Only to get told that 'oh, it's a tragic little story that's supposed to remind you to be grateful for what you have and also to show you the horrors of poverty. At least she's in a happier place now.'
And none of that ever sat quite right with me.
But Pratchett calls this out. He has Death ask the question of why no one came to help, about the reasoning behind letting this little girl die just for a sad story. It's poverty porn and also complacency in a systemic issue.
He doesn't leave you there though. Something is done to save her. Something is done to help. She is given a future. And no one knows who did it except for Death. She is given hope.
And this is something that I've found to be a through line on many of Pratchett's works, hope.
Yes things are fucked up. Yes things are awful. But there is always hope. There is always something that can be done.
And in just turning up your nose at an issue and saying, oh dear, that's very sad, you fail to take action and continue on with the problem year after year after year.
There is hope if we act. And there is no greater gift than a future.
Pratchett militantly demanded that we care about each other. Even “those people.” This is evident especially in the Witches books, but shows across most, if not all, of his work.
And he often returned to the idea that “someone ought to do something” is rarely said by the person who intends to do actually do something

it's occurring to me that i haven't ever made a post laying out my thoughts on this so here goes:
i think john winchester was homophobic.
but that's the thing about the 1980s and 90s. like.... everything was homophobic. the TV was homophobic, the radio was homophobic, the government was homophobic, the schools were homophobic.
john was raising his kids during the height and aftermath of the aids crisis. even being about 10 years younger than dean and being raised in a blue state, the water i was swimming in was homophobic. every adult in my life was homophobic and they weren't even marine vets who *volunteered* for vietnam (read: heavily correlated with conservative views)
i think sometimes being in the 2020s when so much has changed (but not enough!) is that most of the homophobes I encounter these days are virulent. they're clinging to a hateful ideology with fervor even as it slips out of the cultural norm. they're vocal; they're saying slurs; they feel strongly; it's a big part of their personalities.
now, i don't think that's john winchester.
but it doesn't have to be. in order for john not to be raising his kids in a homophobic environment, he would have had to be intentional pro-gay counter talk. and he wasn't doing that. that requires an amount of care and attention to his kids' environment and emotions that john was demonstrably, canonically just not doing.
i don't see john going on big anti-gay rants and i don't necessarily see him threatening to kick dean out forever if he caught him with a boy. but we know he *would* kick dean out for some stuff so i'm not ruling out some kind of isolation based punishment. but like john doesn't have to be Big Homophobe by today's standards. he was just raising his kids absolutely horribly during a time when homophobia was a fucking cultural cancer.
all it would take to make john a homophobic parent is one or two comments from him - not even about dean or sam - but about gay people in general or some news story or some hate crime and boom, he's shown himself aligned with the culture. and the culture is homophobic.
that feels obscenely plausible to me.
dean was 15 when don't ask don't tell became the law. and that *incredibly homophobic* law was actually an attempt at reducing the amount of homophobic policies in the us military*. and you learn a hell of a lot before you're 15.......
and this is all stuff i think without taking into account most of supernatural and analyzing the behaviors of dean closeted winchester. i think there's a lot of reasons why dean's closeted. and he's not just about his sexuality but about so many of his other desires and wants - like his desire for a family, or a peaceful life not hunting, or feelings of worth beyond what he can offer of himself to other people. and i can tell you right now john had a big impact on dean not getting - and not feeling like he could even vocalize wanting - those ones. the sexuality part just doesn't even feel like a leap.
