Iran is slowly coming back online, but by "online," I mean they've moved from whitelisting some websites to blacklisting everything. I had no idea what these terms meant, but living in Iran forces you to know about technical network and connection stuff. Basically, instead of banning everything except for a few shitty malware apps posing as "social media platforms", they have now moved to filter out and ban the same usual things as before (like Telegram, Instagram, YouTube, everything). So what does that mean? It means more IPs will be available to bypass the ban, and VPNs will be more affordable. So more people can access the internet, STILL ILLEGALLY and THROUGH A PAYWALL.
It's currently close to 4 AM now that I'm posting this, and I've been crying non-stop since midnight because my friends came back online one by one through an unstable connection and said: "Hi, I'm alive." I had prepared myself for the funeral of so many of my friends. Some haven't come back online yet, and we've formed small "search and rescue" groups to find their contacts or families to check if they're okay.
What remains a fact amidst all of this is that nobody in the world ever gave a single fuck about us. I was one of the lucky ones to connect during the complete shutdown via some newly invented way we were too scared to even publish on GitHub for fear of getting arrested. In the time I was connected, I felt immense guilt for having access to the internet, and I begged you all on my socials to be the voice of the people who were about to get executed.
Not even once did I see someone talk about the internet blackout in Iran, and it enrages me.
We've been massacred, mass executed, and then silenced by getting our only way of communicating with the world shut off and the world treats it as some background noise, some irrelevant news that isn't even worth spending time hearing about.
So I'm asking you again, please, be the voice for the people in Iran. We are barely surviving.

just to pre-empt a few possible objections to the list, it was published in 2016 and:
JK Rowling's public transphobia downward spiral began in 2018.
All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells) was published in 2017 and Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir) was published in 2019.
The Fifth Season (NK Jemisin) was published in 2015 & given that the editor included a different NK Jemisin I presume Fifth Season simply hadn't hit all-time classic status yet.
The editor stated upfront that they included 1 book per author.
I have no idea what We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Shirley Jackson) is doing there given that it categorically is not SFF.

Absolutely no judgment, I’m genuinely really curious and I figured more people would answer anonymously here than on the original post.
My favorite quirk of American English is that since we're constantly exaggerating, sometimes it's more intense to say something slightly less intense. Because like, it means you actually thought about it.
"you look great!" - normal. Anyone could say this. Could be true or could just be lying to be nice. Very normal expected thing to say to someone
"you look good." - gay as hell thing to say to someone.
Alright fine I like a CHALLENGE now to explain this for people with low or no vision, making an assumption that most people reading this are not Mandarin speakers...
All Chinese languages I'm personally aware of, Mandarin included, do not have alphabets. They instead have characters-- more or less, individual units of meaning, like words. But if you know enough about the language, they can sometimes convey sound and sometimes convey meaning.
That is because of something called radicals-- basically, most characters are at least partially broken up into familiar individual component pieces that, themselves, are or represent words. Next post I will give some actual relevant examples because I don't have Chinese input enabled on my phone.
I think "fuck you, I hate your work and I will do it myself and I will do it better" is a really funny and epic sentiment. i started publishing poetry because an ex boyfriend of mine was publishing really ass poetry in a bunch of journals and I was like "Jesus christ, this is garbage, I could do that, and I could do it better." now I have a page in the Academy of American Poets and I've published a full length collection and his website says "former poet." You should win by succeeding way harder than they do. Spite is a legitimate energy source.

Every once in a while somebody finds this post and does a variant of "that's because if you let people think they know about medicine they become anti-vaxxers".
And if you are someone thinking that thought, I want you to stop a moment and consider the likely effects of generations of doctors routinely dismissing the concerns, symptom reports, history, and earnestly researched information of their patients.
What does that do to the medical field's reputation? To people's sense that their needs will be heard and honestly evaluated? To the communities sense of doctors as people who will help you?
What happens to the credibility of mainstream medicine when everybody has stories of themself or someone they love having major or persistent medical problems because doctors won't listen?
We have piles of well researched data that medical professionals are prone to dismissing information from:
women
children
people of color
addicts and former addicts
people with mental illness
people with chronic pain
people with multiple health conditions
fat people
So, you know, the vast majority of people.
Anti-vaxxers are not a rebuttal to the original post. The thing I'm talking about in the original post is the cause of the anti-vaxxer movement.
Because frightened people who've lost their trust that they'll be fairly heard and treated by the medical profession often go searching for an alternate, more sympathetic establishment for themselves and their kids because they have not been getting adequate and fair care. The medical field itself has driven people straight into the arms of snake-oil salesmen and misinformation podcasters.
If we want to stem the tide of medical misinformation, doctors need to be answerable to the people whose bodies they claim expertise in. And that means not claiming to know everything and patients know nothing.

Amazon is allowing gift senders to choose items from third-party sellers, which could open recipients up to new privacy risks.
This IS really bad - people are going to be doxxed, people are going to be stalked. This is a privacy nightmare.
Basically:
Amazon allows public wishlists for public individuals, previously fulfilled through Amazon. This was a fairly private way to receive items anonymously from donors/fans/people online
Amazon is now allowing these lists to be fulfilled by third-party sellers.
Amazon will provide your name and address to said third party sellers
Third party sellers may or may not post tracking updates (aka: your address) to the person who ORDERED the item from your wishlist
Third party delivery companies may also post their delivery photos - of your front door and house number - and send them to the person who ordered the gift.
If you use public Amazon wishlists, turn them private or remove your address. The only private way to use these going forward will be via PO box (unless they roll back this change).

Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.

Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
