So--when I was in my mid-twenties and the Disaster Ex tried to make me kill myself, the local mental hospital didn't have any beds open in the usual ward for attempted suicides.
What they did have was a single spare bed in the small, comfortable, quiet, wildly expensive facility for girls with eating disorders.
They asked each of the young women currently living there if it was acceptable that I might occupy a bed in one of the rooms for a while, just the long weekend while I was waiting for a doctor's evaluation. I hadn't been violent, I had gone with the cops without putting up any fight at all, and I was still and I was small and all those things were sufficient for me to be deemed safe. So up they sent me, to somewhere high in Western Psych, above the smells and sounds of the denser-packed wards, above where the care workers were harried and frustrated, to a gentle space with seven or eight young women in it.
I was five foot three, and I weighed about 115 pounds. I was underweight for my frame, as a fair amount of that weight was martial arts muscle; I would probably have been ten pounds heavier if I were healthy, with the amount of activity I got.
I was at least two inches shorter than pretty much every other young woman there, six or seven inches shorter than one of them, and I had at least thirty pounds on several of them. The tallest was not allowed to walk, she had to sit in a wheelchair and be pushed around, because her condition was so advanced that the motion would undo what good her hard work had done.
And over the course of the four or five days I was there, multiple of them came up to me alone to quietly tell me that I had the *perfect* body, and they wished they could be as skinny as I was. That I needed to live, because I was beautiful, and if they were as beautiful as I was, they wouldn't need to be here.
Their eyes were on me all the time, in the hours that I wasn't sleeping. I spent a lot of time sleeping, and we took our meals separately (I not needing to be monitored while I ate, and not having my food weighed), but we spent a fair amount of time sitting around in the little shared living room space, talking about movies and magazines and books we'd loved, talking about our families. I didn't talk about my family; they didn't pry.
They were all so fucking nice.
And I could have broken any one of them over my narrow knee. They each thought they were bigger than I was.
Their brains lied to them, every time they looked at a mirror. Every time they looked down at their own thighs. What they saw was not what I could see. They had bright, beautiful eyes in dark hollows, and I could count their vertebrae, could see their ribs winging when they breathed, could see the motion of every tendon on the backs of their hands.
They weren't celebrities. They weren't being paid to have particular bodies, nor were they deep in the toxic sea of having strangers take photos of them to sell to gossip rags if they stepped out of doors in old jeans. They had families and loved ones who were doing everything that they could to protect them, to uplift them and help them be healthy. They were just everyday people--a nurse, a couple of students, a couple of recent college grads, a young woman who had decided it was time to really get help because she wanted to be a mother--and still they'd been so injured by the neverending fucking deluge of body-image bullshit that they were dying of it.
That was in 2009. Things are worse now. I think about them still. I hope that they're all right.
I hate you Ozempic craze I hate you 'heroin chic' I hate you weight loss ads on public radio I hate Burn Fat Fast ads every thirty seconds I hate you I hate you I hate you
I grew up before the term 'thigh gap' was invented I grew up before 'hip dip' was invented I was born before 'muffin top' was a thing before 'clean girl look' was a thing before 'glass skin' was a thing before razoring off peach fuzz was a thing and I'm so so so fucking tired of us inventing new concepts purely for the purpose of convincing people to hate their own bodies enough to buy products
Itd be funny as fuck if the world operated like how people with social anxiety think it does. Like what if you got on a bus and everyone was like wow look at that piece of shit loser. Get off the bus you ugly bastard
I donât think healthy people every really get chronic illness.
I have a friend I know from when we were both 6. She is the only person living nearby and so she saw me go from walking through limping to wheelchair on a daily basis. I keep her updated on my health even tho we rarely hang out anymore. She was gonna come over yesterday and I had to cancel. She asked if I canât hang out later that day. When I said i wonât feel better later, that if I feel that bad in the morning later will only get worse she got annoyed and âjokedâ that Iâm just finding excuses. And I was surprised, she knows all about me being disabled after all? So, a bit taken aback, I told her itâs a normal thing for me.
âBut you got the diagnosis now, arenât you better?? I thought youâll get better nowâ
She was honestly surprised and it made me realize a thing. They donât get it. They donât get that getting diagnosed only equals benefits like welfare or parking spot for us, and sometimes better pain meds but that is just like pushing luck. That itâs a forever thing. That that one day we felt good a week ago was just a bright spot and doesnât mean we wonât need our aids anymore, cause chronic illness is not linear and will make a great comeback in next four hours, and the next good day is planned on when weâre 70. Cause when abled people are sick, they get better. And our illness is just an excuse for them. And when we say we will never get better they think weâre being dramatic and pessimistic. And I donât think theyâll ever get it, cause to get it you need to live it. And I want my friends to stay healthy and not go through hell.
This is definitely okay to reblog and abled people are encouraged to reblog cause maybe itâll help others understand

âThe Roof Garden is nestled on the eleventh floor of Rockefeller Center. High-finance shangri-la, âBusinessWorldâ, a place where burned corporate victims go to calm themselvesâ Itâs a hidden plateau guarded by vigilante scrapers. Danny and John play here sometimes. âThis is great for âAuto Theft Monksâ,â John laughs, surveying the paths and walkways built around thick walls, meditative structures. He places his hands together and intones, âFather I have returned from working with the underprivileged street youthsâ. Danny falls right in: âAnd what have you accomplished, my son?â John fishes into imaginary robes and replies, âI have learned new ways of hot-wiring late-model cars; Cadillacs and Monte Carlos in particular. I also bring you keys to customized Chevy van, the kind so popular with young people todayâ. The two walk, heads bowed beneath a thick, Gothic arch, down a narrow gravel path laid out in the garden. âYou have done well, my sonâ, Danny says benignly. âTomorrow you shall go forth and steal accessories: rear-view mirrors, chrome exhaust pipes. There is much to be doneâ. They smile religiously and file through the window to the elevator which takes them down to another, more important playground. Dress rehearsal.â

John befriended a hospitalized little girl named Marixa Lao. During the goodnights for episodes 16 and 17 of season 2 you can see him gesturing to the âMâ on his jacket, mouthing âHi, Marixa!â The nurses at the hospital said the little girl stayed up all night just to see him, and âlit up like the sunâ when he signaled to her.
reblog if you agree that john could totally have pulled a bill murray and reinvented his career as a dramatic (or comedy-drama) actor later in life
So, you know how certain Christian missionaries are trained to act in a very obnoxious way, so that most people they preach to will reject them outright, so they feel like the world hates them for being Christian and they can only be friends with fellow Christians? You know that thing?
I think as activists, we sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves whether we're acting like those missionaries. I think this type of behavior is a little more ingrained into our society than some of us realize, and some of us have internalized it without realizing what it's actually meant to do.
OP I know that this is probably a different direction than you were going, but genuinely this advice would do so so much to help people not fall into secular political cults.
A lot of high control groups use this tactic to isolate their members. Itâs absolutely not just evangelizing Christians. New age wellness cults often encourage their members to make outlandish and offensive accusations regarding the mental and physical health of other people or their children, because they know that the backlash their members receive will reinforce the idea that the âmainstreamâ simply has no room for people who like crystals and essential oils. White supremacist cults will seed the vocabulary of new recruits with Nazi dog whistles that fly over those recruits heads, specifically so that they will get clocked as possible neo-Nazis and shunned by anyone who might offer them another perspective and help them to get out before itâs too late. And a lot of left-leaning political cults strongly encourage members to share their views in the most inflammatory ways possible, and then say âyou see? everyone outside of this small circle is evil and cannot be relied onâ when, inevitably, that produces bad results.
Sometimes I think that activists fall into these patterns completely accidentally, either because they were raised in culturally Christian evangelical environments and never unpacked it, or else because they just arenât any good at approaching things in a non-inflammatory way and no oneâs shown them how.
âŚBut sometimes, these structures emerge in activist circles because those circles are legitimately becoming high control groups.
I think some things to watch out for especially in this regard are:
Are you being directed to behave in an extremely hostile and alienating way? (even if itâs by someone who you trust!)
Does the group you are in immediately shut down any conversation about the effectiveness of an antagonistic strategy? In particular, do they shut that conversation down using in-group stock phrases?
Is experiencing harsh rejection seen as something of a rite of passage?
Do you receive more validation from the group you are in after you have been rejected by someone outside the group than at any other time?
Have you ever been concerned that the antagonistic strategy you are using hurt someone you cared about, only to be quickly advised by members of the group that that person was toxic and that you should actually completely cut them out of your life?
These to me are all pretty significant red flags about the group in question, whatever the specific thing that brings people together there is. If you start noticing them in a group that you are a part of, be that an in-person activist circle or a Discord server or anything in between, take a step back and seriously consider the possibility that the good thing that you joined is turning into something different, and possibly dangerous.
In the words of Jonestown survivor Deborah Layton, âNobody joins a cult. You join a self-help group, a religious movement, a political organization. They change so gradually, by the time you realize youâre entrapped â and almost everybody does â you canât figure a safe way back out.â
this is a pdf detailing the BITE model of authoritarian control, a method for determining whether or not you're in a cult.
even if you feel confident you are not and have never been in a cult, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the signs, just in case one begins to sneak up on you in the future.
Ok, I actually want to talk about this for a moment.
Jonestown, one of the most infamous cults in history, with a mass suicide / mass murder that left more than 900 people dead of cyanide poisoning, hundreds of whom were children⌠was a leftist political cult. That fact is an unambiguous and completely undebatable matter of historical record.
This isnât a footnote in the story of Jonestown, and it isnât a weird anti-leftist gotcha either. Jonestown attracted people to their cause with anti-segregation and anti-poverty activist work, and they did actual, meaningful good for those causes. The Peopleâs Temple was a leftist org, unambiguously. They created mutual aid networks for food aid, and rent assistance, and job placement services, and clothing donations, and winter heating. They leaned heavily on the Indianapolis Human Rights Commission in order to push desegregation, and led sit-ins and boycotts and protests. They participated in significant voter registration efforts. They led the fight against the eviction of tenants from San Francisco's International Hotel.
People joined The Peopleâs Temple because it was a good thing when they joined it. They didnât start out as brainwashed cultists, and they didnât gravitate towards the leadership of Jim Jones out of masochism, or inherent submissiveness, or a perverse love of creeping authoritarianism. They fell in line under Jim Jones because heâd built a community that was genuinely helping people, and was advancing a political cause that seemed worth fighting. They followed Jim Jones because he earned their trust.
Jim Jones then used the trust and the social capital that he had gained from all of the above in order to elevate himself to the status of a messianic figure, and abuse and profit off of his followers. Slowly but surely, he boiled the frog. It was all good â and then it was mostly good â and then, well there was some abuse, but it wasnât that bad, and it wasnât really his fault â and then there was a lot of abuse, but the outside world would destroy them if given the chance, so wasnât it the lesser of the two evils? And then, eventually, it got so bad that hundreds of people poisoned themselves and their children at his command, and murdered everyone in the compound who refused and resisted.
Your cause of choice is not immune from abusers taking advantage of it!
It doesnât matter if youâre right. It doesnât matter if your cause is just. It does not matter if your good thing really is a good thing, because there is always the possibility that it will one day be co-opted by a monster. And if the fact that it started good is enough for you to ignore that gradual, subtle change, you could end up in a truly horrible situation.
One of my best friends in undergrad got sucked into a cult. Years later, we talked about it, and he told me something that Iâll never forget which is, itâs only when you look all the way back at things that they seem crazy. You start off with things that are totally normal and innocuous: âweâre stronger togetherâ; âoppression is badâ; âyou can accomplish more if you believe in yourselfâ; âempathy is important and we should all try to bring more of it into our livesâ; etc. Then, you move to something thatâs just a little step away from that. And then again. And then again. And then again. But it never feels like a big jump, because itâs not! A -> Z is crazy, but A -> B wasnât, and B -> C wasnât, and C -> D wasnât, andâŚ
This friend was smart, and rational, and independent, and normal, and by the time he and his wife left, theyâd gone from just thinking that we should all practice more emotional mindfulness, to being terrified that leaving the cult and the cult leader would literally kill them, via the cult leader having magical powers.
If your only analysis is âWhere I started was good, and no single step since then has been crazyâ that is utterly insufficient to keep you safe.
âThis canât possibly be a cult, because when I joined it was a leftist political org and thereâs never been a single instance where it suddenly changedâ is literally the exact logic that kept people in Jonestown until it was too late.
NEED a coworker who will do bits with me
I am autistic, and trained in improv, so what I like to do is build a character when I start a new job, and just play that character to the hilt from day one. The best bit of advice I've ever been given is "never wear yourself to work, you'll wear your YOU out too quickly." So when I started at this dollar store, the character I built was Alice. Alice was a church youth group leader. She LOVED James Taylor, and frequently brought cookies into work for her co-workers. Alice worked night shifts with a woman named Janel. Janel was the only African American person in the small town in Western Colorado that we lived in. Janel was a former biker, and in the 80's, she lived with 4 drag queens for a couple of years. Janel liked heavy metal music. The first closing shift I worked, I realized that it would be MUCH more fun to bring Janel in on The Joke, so after we closed, and she went to the office to count the money, I put on some Hozier, and started doing the Cigarette count. She comes out, and I'm sitting on the counter, singing along to Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene, and she's like "okay, what gives?" So I explain to her about Alice. And how Alice is a character I've been playing, and I'm actually a second generation circus sideshow performer, and I'm working at a dollar store because I'm staying home to take care of my dad, who had lung cancer, and I'm keeping myself sane by playing a top secret improv game. I then hammer a nail into my nose to prove it. She's THRILLED. she asks to be my foil, and I tell her "that's why I'm telling you all this" and for the next two years, and they were the hardest years of my life, every day that I went in to work, I played the most incredible long form improv game ever played. It was so natural and true, and therefore, HYSTERICAL. and only WE knew about it. But here's the thing, just because nobody else knew that we were acting, doesn't mean they weren't seeing an improv comedy performance, so we were just inexplicably ridiculously funny to anyone witnessing us, like WHY are these two cashiers the funniest thing in the world, they're not joking, they're dead serious, they're just doing their jobs. It was quite the mindfuck for people

Women in Shakespeare
Also like to point out that when her mother says âI was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid,â (translation: I had you when I was your age) you have to remember her fatherâs words: âearth hath swallowed all my hopes but she,â (translation: all the other children died.)Â The whole plot point of Juliet being an only child is explained by her mother being a Margaret Beaufort type who had her first child too young and it damaged her past the point of being able to bear more children.
Margaret Beaufort died in 1509. She was a major player in the Wars of the Roses, the swirling on-again-off-again civil wars that consumed England from 1455-1487. Romeo and Juliet was written and first performed in the early 1590s. Your average English person of Shakespeareâs day would probably have had at least a vague understanding of who she was and what happened to her, because she was a key figure in recent history and was still getting passed around as a cautionary tale.
There are two great problems with what happened to Margaret (and that her parents are trying to do to Juliet). One is easy for modern people to spot (but was also a common response back in her own day). And thatâs the moral implications of what was done to her. She was too young to be married, and it was horrifying that she was forced into it so young. Every one of the adults around her either acted immorally or failed to protect her. They were wrong. This is what modern people see, and itâs important to remember that people back in her day mostly agreed with it. Youâre supposed to think itâs fucked up! When girls were married that young (and it didnât happen often!) it was a formality 99% of the time. It was for dynastic or financial reasons (the girl has lots of money and/or land and/or a title that her husband wants), but the âcoupleâ donât consummate their marriage for years. And itâs not just that they would have separate bedrooms. They might not even live in the same country until the girl was in her late teens and physically and mentally mature enough to bear and raise kids. Hell, a lot of times they didnât even meet until the girl was older! They had this thing called âproxy marriageâ where you would have two separate ceremonies, in two separate places, with each party saying their vows separately, one in one city and the other in a different one. So, yeah, sure, the girl was technically married at 12, but she didnât actually meet her âhusbandâ in person until she was 17 and they didnât start sleeping together until she was 20. That was a thing they did.
The other problem, the one that modern people donât notice, is dynastic. See, marriage wasnât generally because you loved someone. It was because you had the resources to support a family, and you or your family wanted to pool those resources with someone. Itâs about âour family has these resources, and we want that to continue.â Itâs about continuity across generations. Itâs about making sure that your children and grandchildren have the best possible resources to survive and thrive, whether those resources are land or a trade or a title or money or whatever. In order for this to work, you have to have kids! The family and the familyâs resources depend on the married couple having children. If the couple doesnât have children, the marriage is a failure. And that failure affects not only the couple, but both families. This is a really big problem. And you canât have just one kid to pass on the family name, because half of all kids die in early childhood. If you want to be safe, you need several kids, to be sure at least one will survive to adulthood (when they can marry and pass on the family name and resources.
You know what happens when a girl has her first pregnancy too young? She is very likely to either die in childbirth, or have complications that destroy her future fertility. Just like Margaret Beaufort. Just like Julietâs mother. In other words, the marriage is a failure, not just for her, but also for her family, and her husband (who canât divorce her, itâs not allowed except in extremely rare circumstances), and her husbandâs family. So even the people who didnât have a moral problem with adult men having sex with pubescent girls had a practical problem with girls married too young because you are very likely to destroy the entire purpose of the marriage by doing it. As Shakespeare reminds us in the play through Julietâs mother having been married too young and only having one child.
Shakespeare is telling us âyeah, this is fucked up. but even if youâre the kind of awful person who doesnât think girls marrying too young is morally wrong, itâs also a problem for practical and dynastic reasons, donât forget that by doing this wrong thing you are very likely to destroy what you most want out of it.â
Interesting
It bears repeating:
donât forget that by doing this wrong thing you are very likely to destroy what you most want out of it.â
yes, excellent discussion!
another thing i noticed, the year my local community shakespeare theater did r&j, and i made the costumes so i got to watch the show every night: part of why capulet is telling paris, take your time, get to know each other, no rush, is that he still has his nephew tybalt as his heir. as long as tybalt is in the picture, there is no pressure on juliet to go further with paris, than get acquainted. once tybalt is killed, then suddenly capulet needs an heir, he needs a husband for juliet, now, this week. (the role of capulet is best given to the actor in the company that can do over the top apoplexy, you need to believe his urgency comes at least in part by how clearly he could drop dead any moment from giving himself a stroke)
i feel like this play is often taught in middle schools as if it was somehow relevant to, or about, teen hormone storms. really it's got more to do with the social structures around family and inheritance. leaving that context out makes it confusing, why is capulet suddenly flipping from nice dad to evil dad?
art history matters.
I've been thinking about this play a lot lately. I really wanna highlight that Lord Capulet asks Paris to wait and get to know her, and to woo her, while Tybalt lives. While Tybalt is alive, Juliet has something of a reprieve, and her wellbeing as his only child matters more to Capulet. But once Tybalt has died, the gloves come off. Lord Capulet was worried about his daughter's wellbeing when he felt he had the space to care, but as soon as his dynasty is at stake, as soon as this becomes larger than Juliet's happiness, his consideration for her health and mental wellbeing get thrown away. Which also is due in part to the fact that Capulet's family is implicated in a brawl that has left several dead after the Prince's family EXPLICITLY told the Capulets and Montagues to stop fighting or face dire consequences, AND Capulet is trying to align himself with the Prince's family by marrying Juliet off to County Paris, a relative of the Prince. So to Lord Capulet, it is now less important that Juliet is happy, and more important than he reminds the Prince of his loyalty via this marriage and aligns his family with the Prince's before it's too late. And he believes this must be done, at any cost...until Juliet kills herself. And that's when he realises the devastating cost of treating his family as chess pieces. He realises his wrongdoing far too late.
Seriously Romeo and Juliet is HEAVY on the dynastic politics, and I think you can't fully understand the play without understanding how that all works, especially because the impact of dynastic marriages on women and girls is like. THE POINT of the play
Do it scared but please don't do it hungry. Please don't do it dehydrated. It's gonna make it so much scarier. Please.

the idea that a sex scene in fiction is fundamentally useless/simply for audience titillation UNLESS theyâre fucking infodumping exposition while they bone or something is so funny and myopic to me. like, you really genuinely believe for real that there is NOTHING to be gained about your understanding of a story or characters simply from how they approach and engage in sex? really for real?
i'm not convinced that art only has something to offer us when we personally want to participate in the activities being depicted
Tumblr users will say "queer history" and mean "midcentury archival records from a specific US-American city that I have extrapolated into a universal mythos" and not even blink
"learn your queer history" I am from fucking INDIA
Maybe your queer elders fictional or otherwise were also influenced by the biases and contradictions of their own circumstances, time and place, and I am no more beholden to their ideas and ways of doing things than I am to any other form of tradition trying to constrain me.
Perhaps history is a conversation and not an edict.
I fucking snortled
