Whenever you see a fanart of Kaz and Inej kissing or touching, thereās always that one person that commentsĀ āthey canāt do thatā even though a huge part of their character arcs were them gradually building up their comfort levels with eachother in order touch, and starting to heal from their trauma. It is heavily implied in the text when Kaz and Inej hold hands- Kaz without his gloves- that they are working to get better, and one day will be able to touch each other freely. Obviously this will take quite a while, but it will happen. Itās almost as if people donāt want Kaz and Inej to heal. Thereās nothing wrong with couples who never touch of course, but it isnāt Kaz and Inej, and it undermines their character development and growth.Ā

he of course wears his gloves because of his touch aversion, but also for other sensory reasons (leather is a Safe Material, and gloves provide a barrier so heās less likely to have direct contact with Bad Textures/Sensations)
This child climbed all. The. Time. He likes being high up and itās not just for the extra privacy. Da and Jordie used to joke that when Kaz was older, he could take over all the roofing work, he was known to hide up in the hayloft of the barn and even tried to convince Da to let him sleep there at night instead of in the house, and there was not a single tree in all of Not-Lij that he hadnāt climbed (and hanged upside-down from a branch) at least once before he and Jordie left.Ā If not for his leg, he would be silently begging Inej to teach him to walk the highwire and do trapeze post-CK. And once he gets his act together and fixes his and Jesperās relationship and they just hang out together at the mansion, Jesper takes to sitting on the floor a lot because ADHD while Kaz frequently lays on the countertops, desk, tables, etc... The other crows are confused by this and at first keep trying to offer them both a seat (ānobodyās using the settee, you knowā and āthe chairs wonāt break if you use themā) but quickly come to understand that they are both much more content like this, thank you very much, and it becomes a perfectly normal part of their time together
I adopted @randomcat1832 's headcanons that he uses smaller magic tricks as a subtle stim, and that birds are a special interest (this one is essentially canon though, isnāt it? š)
He ALWAYS has several jobs of varying complexity up his sleeve and ready to be pulled off at the drop of a hat. He tells nobody about these until he decides to actually do them. This is so that when he has a shutdown or meltdown, he can mostly hide away in his rooms for days if needed to regulate, and make everyone think heās just been busy figuring out a job
Heās studied facial expressions and body language almost obsessively for as long as he can remember, trying to learn how to Be Like Other People, and used everything he could find to practice it himself (puddles, windows, mirrors, he even tried to use his shadow for body language when nothing else was around). He actually got very good at this and itās helped him a lot with things like monitoring the gambling halls, predicting when somethingās about to Go Down, and running cons, deciding on a mark, etc.Ā That mirror he bought with his first payment in the Dregs was used for learning magic tricks but he also used it to continue practicing his expressions and body language
He always has a reason. By which I mean even as a child he adamantly refused to do something if he didnāt know (what he considered to be) a valid reason for doing it. It drove people crazy sometimes but Da also loved how inquisitive he could be sometimes because of it, and constantly encouraged his curiosity and need to know how things work and why things are the way they are.
He was extremely punctual as a child. Da told him to be in bed at 8 bells, or be in the carriage to go to Lij at 6? He was there when that bell chimes and not a second before (but he definitely spent at least 10-15 minutes just hanging out nearby, fully ready and doing nothing else, just to make sure he wasnāt late). Heās still very punctual when heās older but he absolutely shows up to things early for safety, preparedness, and/or control/power-play reasons. But if none of those apply, he sticks to timelines/schedules perfectly. (This annoys/annoyed Per Haskell to no end and Kaz takes some satisfaction in that. Like "boy I know you've been back for an hour why didn't you just report back to me sooner", Kaz, internally grinning because he is a cheeky bastard (affectionate) "You told me to report back at x time :) " )
While heās great at adapting to changes in his schemes as heās pulling them off, a lot of it is because heās thought out so many ways things could go down and has prepared himself for all these outcomes way ahead of time. Unexpected/unanticipated changes throw him off and exhaust him so much more, even if he is able to get it together enough to make it work out (this is basically canon too, right??)
Sometimes he misses how much less noise/activity there was back in Not-Lij. The Barrel is chaotic and loud and there's constant stimuli that's harder to get a break from than on the farm. He also secretly misses the more structured routine of taking care of the animals and helping with the crops when he was younger, even though heās very attached to the Barrel and the life he has there now
Speaking of being attachedā¦ He doesnāt let himself get attached much but when it does happen, those attachments are very, very strong ā whether itās with objects/belongings, animals, or relationships. He still has his first set of lockpicks even though half of them are broken now. He claims to be annoyed by the crows Inej feeds outside his window but he would actually be completely devastated if they stopped showing up, and itās not just because he knows Inej likes them. He shut down and wouldnāt talk to anyone for days after he lost a little stuffed toy his Da had saved up to buy for him (he also never, ever let that toy spend the night not in his bed, and cried if he woke up to find it had fallen on the floor overnight). And weāve all seen how much he secretly loves the other Crows, yeah? He's also just generally very particular about his space and belongings, specifically in terms of other people messing with it/them (also canon?)
Unusual perceptions of, and responses to, pain? Maybe? I dunno I just see him more as the kind of person who ends up going deathly silent when heās in pain, and it takes more than āaverageā to get an obvious reaction (or on the other end of it, things that wouldnāt be considered painful or induce much of reaction for others are agonizing to him) and Iāve been told this is apparently an autistic trait so. On the list it goes š
Thereās canon evidence that he was probably at least somewhat religious (or was raised to be) as a kid (ie: the line thatās something like āhe thought this must be heavenā), but I headcanon that while he may have believed in the values of whatever religion (assuming related to Ghezen because Kerch?) heās never fully believed in any god(s) or afterlife because itās such an intangible concept and heās never seen what he considers to be sufficient evidence of the existence of eitherĀ (have also been told this is a somewhat common autistic experience so it can be on here too)
Reluctant to call this a headcanon because I havenāt thought it through like. At all. But there might be something there with the concept of āautistic sense of justiceā and that playing into Kaz coming to terms with all the things he does in the Barrel in order to avenge Jordieā¦? Maybe? Idk
I know I have more ā and some that are more blatant in their autism flavor ā but much like when someone asks āso what music do you listen to?ā, I have forgotten every thought and bit of knowledge on the topic that I have ever possessed š
This post has been getting some attention lately so Iām going to add some more.
When it comes to food he's actually very sensory seeking. It takes him awhile to branch out from what he's used to but when he eventually does and he reallyyyyyyy latches onto things that have strong flavor/spice/'heat'/'kick'/etc.
If we go the route of him having no tolerance for spice (which, let's be real, growing up in the Barrel, he probably wouldn't be used to it. This boi cannot handle spice): the others are confused by this at first, and think he's 'pushing through' because he's trying to not offend anyone, and/or that it's related to having grown up on the streets and the issues there wrt access to food/meals, especially pre-dregs.Ā
(This does contribute. But eventually they realize it's more than that, and Inej and Nina start bringing spices back with them on some of their visits to Kerch; Jesper, Wylan, and Marya grow things like citrus trees and pepper plants in the garden and start leaving some for Kaz to come by and "steal"; etc.)
Continuing the above: before the accident, Kaz would eat lemons(? Are lemons plausible for a Fantasy-Dutch farm in the ~ 1800s?) straight off the tree. Jordie didn't understand it and used to tease him for it (Kaz tried to tease him back for notĀ liking or being able to tolerate plain lemons. He stopped when he found out it came across wrong/rude when he meant it as affectionate joking/teasing)
(Then he had a little crisis trying to figure out if JordieĀ was actually being mean with his teasing --- Kaz thought it was all fun and games but his own jokes were seen as the opposite of how he intended them and, well, he's misunderstood these things before. How many times has Jordie or Da told him that those older kids who were saying nice things to him were actually being mean??)
Using my hc that Inej brings back a rock for Kaz from each of her voyages:
Kaz gets extremely attached to the rocks. They are comfort items. He does not leave his attic rooms without one in his pocket. He also alternates between them, and has to go through a whole process whenever Inej brings another back to integrate it into the cycle/schedule of which rock accompanies him on a given day.
He does not dare tell anyone about this (at least one of the crows finds out anyway though because he was ambushed once and it fell out of his pocket or something during the fight. He goes to the Wesper mansion or back to the slat where Inej or Nina is waiting, so he can tend to his injuries, but when that's taken care of and he's out of danger he processes that the rock is gone, tries to go back to find it, crow(s) tries to stop him because ādude you're hurt just rest for a second" and he ends up having a meltdown and Stressing that he's not going to be able to find it again. Heās had a rough day, ok?)
His cane is sturdy and literally designed to double as a weapon but if it were to ever break Kaz would "make" Jesper fix it. Getting another made isn't an option ("why would I pay for a new one when I can just get you to fix this one Jesper??" But in reality he's very attached to this particular cane and it is His(tm) and he hates change so yes, it must be this one)
He goes to Jesper for it both to avoid having to hire someone, and because heās.... territorial? I guess? Very particular about other people touching and messing with his things --- and that especiallyĀ goes for his cane --- but Jesper is his friendĀ Favored Second and it will be easier to tolerate him doing this than anyone else who has that ability. Not to mention that when it has to be Exactly Right and that could take awhile, so it's gotta be Jesper because... idk some practical logical reason. It has nothing to do with the fact that Kaz likes and feels comfortable with Jesper and would be happy significantly more content spending all that time with him than any fabrikator he could go out and hire. Nope not at all
After CK, Jesper makes a set of lock picks and gives the set to Kaz. Kaz secretly (or not so secretly, depends on when this happens I think) cherishes them and is constantly caught between āI must use then always' and 'I must never actually use them lest they get damagedā
Continuing the above: Kaz doesn't thank Jesper for the lock picks until like two weeks later --- not because he lacks manners or is Repressed (ok maybe he still is and that's part of it) but because it just... doesn't occur to him. Jesper gives the set to him and Kaz immediately tests it out and says something about them being useable and he doesn't realize that maybe that doesn't actually communicate what he thinks it does

One fun thing about my town is that about two years ago, our feral rabbit population tripled, and while we mostly had grey rabbits, there were a handful of white and black rabbits as well.
