The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write âI brought my youngest to college todayâ and someone else write âmy mom wouldnât let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kidâ and then your head explodes
and we need that! keeps us humble.Â
Then I'm just like WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOUâRE AN ADULT
It goes the other way, too, because WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE A CHILD?!!
I'm 16, that's like, barely a child
I'm in my 30s. You are baby
I'm older than both of you in a trenchcoat.
honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.

Video game building IRL
âWhere do you work?â
*suspiciously*Â âYeah? Whereâs it at?â
Oh down by
Me: âHey darlinâ, you wanna go to A Nice Restaurant to eat?â
Her: âSure thing! Where??â
Me: *prepares for a âWhoâs On Firstâ-esque conversation*
True: I once waited tables for a high-end steak and wine place that was called The Strip Club. Whenever someone asked where I worked, it required some explanation. Especially when my dad asked.
WHERE IS THE FIC WHERE STILES CALLS TECH SUPPORT ON HIS FIRST DAY BUT GETS THE MAINLINE FOR JUNIOR VP DEREK HALE AND DEREK JUST IS HELPFUL
AND STILES JUST CALLS BACK
WHENEVER
HE CANâT PRINT OR WHATEVS. SO DEREK IS LOADING PAPER DOWN ON THE 28TH FLOOR WHEN HE SHOULD BE ON 49TH IN A MEETING WITH HIS SISTERSÂ
âAnyway, you can just tell this company is being grossly mismanaged,â Stiles tells Derek around the Twizzler he just shoved into his mouth.
âI agree,â Derek says, head buried in the side panel of the malfunctioning copier.Â
âResources are clearly available,â Stiles continues, sounding like heâs pacing back and forth near Derekâs feet; âbut they arenât being utilized fully!â
âMmhmm.â Derek smiles to himself. âI hear the Vice President never even went to business school. He even skips out on the budget meetings, most days.â
âWhat a hack,â Stiles sighs. âHey, do you want some candy? What am I saying, look at you. Of course you donât eat candy.â
Derek is grateful that thereâs a plastic panel hiding his overheating face. âI prefer the grape ones, actually, but sure.â
âEugh, gross.â Stiles has to crouch down next to him to give him the candy, pressing right into his side. âLike, for example: okay, youâre clearly really smart, I can tell. Despite your seriously gross taste in Twizzlers. Theyâre wasting you in this position.â
Derek coughs, trying to focus on locating the paper jam. Itâs been so long since someone said anything like that to him that he canât actually tell if Stiles is being sarcastic or not.
âThank you?â he tries, after a too-long pause.
âAnytime,â Stiles says, palm warm between Derekâs shoulder blades. âAlthough, in a strictly literal sense, I have to admit that this position really works for you.â
Derek hits his head on the paper tray.
Derek isnât sure why he let this charade go on for over three weeks, itâs just that whenever Stiles ends up calling his line he canât help but talk to him; it isnât actually too difficult to Google whatever problem Stiles is having with his computer or whatever, and it actually usually is something really lame, like âhow do I take a screenshotâ and âI got disconnected to the main server again,â which honestly happens to everyone, you just have to kick your router a little bit. And itâs more entertaining than budget meetings, thatâs for sure.Â
Itâs just that he really likes his conversations with Stiles. A lot. Okay, maybe he just likes Stiles.Â
So Derek is surprised one morning when heâs finally decided he should just go ahead and ask Stiles out one of these days when he doesnât get a call. Stiles usually calls in once or twice by noon at least, even if itâs just to complain about the coffee in the breakroom.Â
When Derek walks by Stilesâ desk and finds it empty, not just of Stiles, but in fact all his personal belongings have been swept into a cardboard box. Horrified, Derek raps on the cubicle next to him. âHey, do you know where Stiles is?âÂ
The guy, A. Greenberg by his nameplate, just shrugs. âStiles came into work as usual and then he was flipping through the company phonelist, started freaking out about something and just packed everything up. He said he was going to HR."Â
Derek dashes towards the elevator, making it to the ninth floor where Human Resources is just in time. He barges in office after office, making quick apologies, and finally finds Stiles with an exasperated and bored looking Erica Reyes.Â
"You canât file a sexual harassment claim against yourself, Mr. Stilinski,â sheâs saying. âAh, hello, Mr. Hale,â she says when she sees Derek at the door.
Stiles turns, face flushing red. âAhâ I am so sorry Derâ I mean, Mr. Hale, I really didnât know, I mean, this morning all my phone presets were gone so I had to reprogram everything, and then when I called IT and asked for Derekâs line, they said they didnât have a Derek, and then when I looked through the phonelist, I realized the only Derek wasâ"Â
"Itâs fine,â Derek says. âErica, can you just forget thisâ"Â
"Sure,â she says, grinning at him.Â
âStilesââ Derek pulls him into the hallway. âWere you seriously trying to fire yourself for flirting with me?"Â

One of the key differences between conspiracy-theory bullshit and âtalking about things the government actually didâ is that conspiracy-theorist mindset treats political engagement as an ARG. The idea that an average American citizen can engage with intelligence kerfuffles and backroom financial dealing if theyâre sufficiently perceptive because the powers that be canât help but leave âhintsâ in odd places everyone can see.
To be sure, the United States government is evil, and it has done and is doing a lot of shady shit that could be called conspiratorial. But, for instance, when the CIA was running Operation Timber Sycamore, they very much did not call up Nikki Minaj and be like âHey we need you to release a concept album about selling guns to ISISâ
Speaking of things the government has actually done, youâll notice that this stuff only really flourishes around things that are fabricated or unfalsifiable, like Qanon stuff, as opposed to anything that actually happened. Like nobody believes youâll learn the truth about the government murdering Gary Webb by decoding the super bowl halftime show.
Thereâs an Italian anarchist group who coined the term âconspiracy fantasyâ for this, because a bunch of non-English languages translate âconspiracy theoryâ with a neutral connotation and they needed a way to say âconspiracy theory (derogatory)â.
They have some good discussion in the second half of the episode about how to differentiate between conspiracy theories and fantasies, and they say the same thing; actual conspiracies have a concrete and narrow goal, are focussed on a particular time and place, and get more likely to be discovered the more people are part of them.
Conspiracy fantasies, otoh, are exactly the above: ungrounded in a particular time or place (e.g. they allegedly reach back hundreds or thousands of years), constantly escalating and adding new supposed members despite the difficulty in keeping so many people quiet, and the goal becomes more and more broad.
One of my own conspiracy theories:
I have long suspected that the prevalence of conspiracy fantasy in the Untidy States has been encouraged by the intelligence community and other entrenched interests in order to discredit any legitimate investigation into actual conspiracies as âlunatic fringe nonsense.â
That wouldnât surprise me at all. Disinformation and psyops are some of the few things US intelligence is actually almost good at, for example [gestures vaguely at the last 100 years of Latin American history] or [gestures vaguely at the last 100 years of Middle Eastern history] or [gestures vaguely at the last 100 years of the American labor movement], and itâs extremely advantageous to have the public consciousness associate âcritically examining the things the government does on account of the government being objectively evilâ with weird Facebook dads posting whatever the fuck this is:
The other thing with conspiracy thought is that it gives the conspiracy theorist a feeling of agency over their life. They can insert themselves into the narrative in a way that gives them power, but also doesnt involve gay ass communist things like working together with other people. Conspiracy theory is fantasy, but itâs specifically a power fantasy.
I wouldnât necessarily say that the government disseminates disinformation to create conspiracies, but they gladly allow conspiracy theorists to have platforms because it muddies the informational waters.
Does the government benefit from you believing UFOâs are aliens? Yes. Are they going to spend money convincing you that UFOs are aliens? Probably not.

Honest to god I could write entire books on the fucked up little micro societies that exist solely in isolated gmod servers
my buddy and I were crawling some servers on gmod one day, just dinking around and being mild nuisances. we found one server where everyone had some ridiculous rank/titleâvarious mythical creatures and wizards and stuff. We bothered someone badly enough (probably made a big mess of barrels or something) that we got put in jail, but we werenât really interested in playing gmod as much as just goofing off, so we hung around the server for a while. the residents were chatting pretty casually, until someone, in a frantic tone, says âJanus is coming! We need to get this place cleaned up!â Janus logs in, and he has the title of God. Someone sheepishly asks âhey whatâs up Janus?â Janus replies with an ear-splittingly loud buzzing static noise that drowns every sound on the server out. me and my buddy absolutely lost our minds
