I don’t understand the tendency to associate mushrooms with faeries. I think mushrooms are far more strange and mysterious than otherworldly spirits and I think faeries would also be intimidated by their secrets.

In all fairness the fae are also an intimidating and, frankly, terrifying bunch.

Faeries are creepy in the way that rural neighbors are creepy. You think “yikes” and walk the other way if they’re up to some shit, but mushrooms are basically aliens so far beyond our comprehension that they might be god, maybe, in an abstract sense.
