trying to explain why i love being aroace is like if love is the light spectrum romantic and sexual attraction are visible light and then every other possible kind of love is outside of the visible spectrum and it’s like. just wait till you guys find out about radio waves they’re actually really important in a lot of modern technology. same with x-rays and infrared. and if you guys knew where and how to look you’d actually see there’s way more light around you than you actually thought there was. you’ve trapped yourself in a fake box of what light is based on what you can see but if you try a little harder to look there’s so much more out there. visible light isn’t special just because it’s what you happen to be able to see, stars are made of all of it, every wavelength, visible light is just a fraction of their radiance. if you didn’t bother with visible light so much you’d be able to appreciate what light truly is so much better. just saying.

sherpas used to be treated like expedition partners that knew the land better than you because they were raised on it and now they’re treated like they are lowly disposable service workers setting up heated tents or spas for wealthy hikers who have no business on the mountain like they are collecting your nasty trash off one of the holiest and most sacred mountains in the world like do y’all understand that we see sagarmatha or mount everest as a living deity on earth while the rest of the world sees her as a conquest?

locals of nepal hold the belief that your karma is the strongest as you reach the peak of sagarmatha and the mountain gives to you the spiritual energy you carry within yourself—benevolent or malevolent. you violate the spiritual sanctity of the mountain with your trash and your hubris. you disrupt the spirits that have long dwelled there. if you must summit sagarmatha, it isn’t and shouldn’t ever be from a place of bragging rights or bucket list goals but as a spiritual journey to connect with the spirit of nature at its most powerful.

This is a very strong point and I'd like to apologize for my own eye-rolling behavior at the dramatics about heat. I never even paused to consider that other places wouldn't have the infrastructure to handle it... same thing in the reverse, for all the places that shut down for an inch of snow, which isn't much up here in the American midwest, but would understandably be nerve wracking in the south where snow wouldn't normally be a concern, so you'd be left unprepared.

I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.

I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.

Veganism is better for the environment, but claiming that it's a morally superior choice ignores cultural and economic factors that make people eat animal products.

It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.

I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.

I have to confess "your web browser's assistive AI can be instructed to steal your online banking password via prompt injection because it operates with full privileges and treats all text it ingests as equally authoritative sources of user instructions, including the text of web pages it's summarising" is more surprising to me than it should have been. There really is no one involved at any point in the development of these tools who actually understands what they're doing, huh?
