this is what ancient greek philosophy is like
Diogenes driving a mobile home into the symposium to ruin Plato’s day.
the only thing stronger than the gastric distress i get from eating cherries is my love for eating cherries
what
thank you. im once again reminded why i love tumblr because where else could i get content like this
i feel like there is a sleep in me that needs to be slept but each time i sleep i don't sleep that sleep
I do need to be serious for just a moment and say that I felt this way for over 2 decades before biting the bullet and saving up for a sleep study. It turned out I had a life long crippling sleep disorder
It has done me irreparable damage not sleeping well for the first 20 years of my life. It IS worth figuring out if there is a deeper underlying issue if you feel like you are not sleeping well. Even knowing if there is something wrong medically or not is a great stepping stone to either managing symptoms if you are going without treatment or figuring out what next might be causing poor sleep.
I sleep SO MUCH BETTER NOW. I wake up and FEEL like I have slept that sleep. I started dreaming, something that I could count on one hand over 20 years before getting treatment. My bones, muscles, and joints hurt less, my eating habits leveled out, I am more emotionally stable and able to focus.
Everyone harps that sleep is important, and logically you probably know that
*takes you gently by the shoulders*
Not sleeping well will literally destroy your body and mind. Please, please, please do the work to figure out how to give yourself the best sleep possible

Greek Mythology Sources
Interest in greek mythology rises anew with the new number of retellings and adaptions...and misconceptions all around...
Claims like "that never happened" or "that's the roman version" are around a lot...but even if you wanted to learn more, where would you even start looking? Where do you begin your research for your next fic, or next discussion? Well...That's for you!
Here is the Post as DOCs to share outside of tumblr (gets updated)
Here's a list of source names, links to access them, maps, family trees & more
Where to access the texts:
ToposText
Database, interlinks all names and places, has almost all sources translated, can find all name mentions of place or character in the sources, has a map with the places
Perseus Collection Greek and Roman Materials (and Scaife Viewer)
Digital Library, nearly all main greek and roman sources, including OG language text and dictionary for those languages (is instable at times, try coming back a few hours/days later and it should be up again)
Theoi Greek Mythology
Database, has summary posts for individual heroes, creatures, gods and events, as well as many translations, has a search function
List of Ancient Sources
Homer's Iliad (8th BC)
Homer's Odyssey (8th BC)
Epic Cycle (and Theban Cycle) fragments (8-6th BC)
Homeric Hymns (7th BC)
Orphic Hymns (2nd BC/2nd AD)
Quintus Smyrnaeus’s Posthomerica (3rd AD)
Tryphiodorus’s Taking of Ilium (3rd AD)
Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica (3rd BC)
Nonnus’ Dionysiaca (5th AD)
Hesiod’s Theogony, Works and Days, Catalogue of Women (8th BC)
Statius’s Thebaid, Achilleid (1st AD)
(More under cut)
Do not use theoi. Do not use theoi. Do. Not. Use. Theoi. Purge that website from your mind.
It is bad. It is unreliable. It is riddled with errors. It makes up entire figures that do not exist in any ancient sources.
Do. Not. Use. Theoi.
Certainly been getting worse lately, vastls preder Topostext and PDL! But with theoi is not my first choice in website despite its popularity, so important stuff indeed!
It doesn’t really get updated anymore. The original owner and author sold around 2018 and died not long after. I think I emailed him even before then asking if he would accept corrections, and got no reply. I’ve email the current owners quite recently about errors on the site and got no response. I assume at this point it’s just a low-maintenance cash-cow for them, given that it has ads. They don’t seem to actually care about the site.
I made a list here of some of the problems with the site. Basically, I have never found a page on it that doesn’t have at least one mistake, and his choice of using Aldrich’s translation of Apollodorus on the individual pages about figures has lead so many students astray when they’re referencing Apollodorus in essays (Aldrich uses his own reference style for Apollodorus that deviates from the standard style, which means students who know the reference systems should be standard, but don’t realise Aldrich uses a different system, often cite Aldrich’s system without any indication that they’re using Aldrich, meaning their references are nonsense for anyone trying to check them).
Topos is indeed way better. Its search function is amazing too. The only thing one needs to watch out for is the translation of Tzetze’s commentary on Lycophron’s Alexandra. It’s ChatGPT, and done with more of an eye to speed than accuracy (I can’t remember if that’s the exact wording, but that’s basically the disclaimer at the top of the page, so they’re not hiding what they’ve done). It’s useful in some ways in that it is easier to search than Scheer’s edition (which is the source they translated, and is also available for free on archive.org), but apart from all the issues of trusting ChatGPT to translate Ancient Greek, it also often garbles the text completely because Scheer will sometimes suddenly split a page into two columns so the reader can compare different scholia side-by-side, and the chatbot doesn’t catch that, and continues processing the text as if it’s still just one column.
But yeah, other than that, big fan of Topostext.

i'd use the subjunctive, if i were you
The satirical research field "parachute use to prevent death and major trauma" is such a goldmine. The two major publications
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC300808/
and
https://www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k5094
are pretty much perfect satire of the way pseudo-skeptics dismiss domain experts and demand "hard evidence" in the form of exclusively flawless double-blind controlled studies, while clearly demonstrating that they have no idea what that entails, or what the limitations of RCTs are.
wild way to say "kill yourselves"
But the randomized control trial that was actually performed (second link) found no evidence that parachutes prevent mortality! (because they could only recruit people willing to jump off small, landed aircraft)
Okay wait how did you leave out:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a medical intervention justified by observational data must be in want of verification through a randomised controlled trial.
Salt levels critical.
The relevance to parachute use is that individuals jumping from aircraft without the help of a parachute are likely to have a high prevalence of pre-existing psychiatric morbidity. Individuals who use parachutes are likely to have less psychiatric morbidity and may also differ in key demographic factors, such as income and cigarette use. It follows, therefore, that the apparent protective effect of parachutes may be merely an example of the “healthy cohort” effect.
I swear to god, if you say "hapax legomenon" one more time
i really love this piece - bird window collision deterrents should absolutely be mandatory for large buildings not only in NY, but nationwide. designing architecture to not kill the world around us should be the norm.
don’t leave this in the comments!
If anyone is looking for ideas, Chicago Bird Collision Monitors has done decades of advocacy work in this area and fought for real improvements in saving birds. Their work on lights-out and preventing window strikes have had a big impact on the local ecosystem.
well that’s it. doomsday is coming. i’ve been slacking on my checklist, need to get back to it lol
btw remember that home generates individual pokemon trackers SERVER SIDE which will make it extremely difficult if not impossible for anyone to develop a method to do bank -> home transfers after this shutdown. you will NOT be able to just emulate a transfer with hacking tools after this. miracles can happen but absolutely assume that this is a permanent change and get any transfers you need done BEFORE the deadline. you should NOT rely on believing that there will be some way to do this after the deadline

Etsy support is doing a lot of truly appreciating my patience. It is not doing a lot else.
Very few are as infamous as the members of Bor'khannel. They are a secretive group dedicated to the research of flesh magic, the most controversial of the elements. Many talk about their horrid experiments, about how they make themselves into eldritch aberrations. In truth, most folk at Bor'khannel are mainly healers, and have some of the best medical knowledge in the land. But they do often experiment their magic on themselves too, and thus, their outfits are meant to cover the results of said experimenting.
Hey hello! Here's some new art of The Creature. Maybe a cultist, maybe a flesh mage, maybe three anomalocaris in a trenchcoat, maybe an strawberry ice cream cone? Either way, it is a NPC in my campaign and one I've been really excited about.
