i really need "villagers from minecraft are antisemetic caricatures" to become a popular enough sentiment for them to finally change their designs somehow
The fact that this survived the assumed scrutiny of the type of PR coverage a movie adaptation gets you is disappointing and infuriating, but not surprising. Like it's so blatantly obvious, but apparently it's something recognizable they can bank on so it doesn't matter.
A surprising number of people I've talked about this with have pulled the "it was a different time :/" card, which is bananas. It was just as obvious in 2011 as it is now.
There are a decent amount of people in the notes either discussing potential design replacement/resource pack ideas, wondering about them more generally, or mentioning resource packs that address this that they've seen but not actually linking them or mentioning them by name. Every couple of years I'll get the urge to play this game, so I have a little library of resource packs that specifically deal with the villagers designs.
I've gotten all of these to work at one point or another. Disclaimer that these just change the visuals and/or text of the game, so the aspects of the caricature present in the actual mechanics of the game remain unchanged, they've just been divorced from the associated imagery.
