A lot of internet-famous people--guy who can pick any lock, guy who can make anything out of chocolate, guy who can drink lots of water without spilling a drop--are like characters a five-year-old would make up for a comic book.

it sucks that the overwhelming majority of medical messaging around salt/sodium is "evil poisonous substance that you're definitely already eating way too much of," because like. you do still need it. (trust me, as a POTS-haver, I've had to completely rewire my own brain about salt.) and you need more salt when the entire northern hemisphere is hot enough to fry an egg on. ever tried sucking down the recommended 64oz of hydration per day entirely as water, only to find you're peeing constantly without any of the purported benefits of being "hydrated"? assuming you don't have another medical condition that causes frequent urination, your body probably needed more salt/electrolytes to be able to hold onto that water and make use of it. if there was ever a time to keep a sports drink/pedialyte/etc within constant reach, it's when the heat index is 110°F/43°C.

not even joking this is one of the worst possible changes that i could've reasonably conceived of to happen to video games.
having thought about it this is a generationally anti-consumer announcement that will have a profoundly detrimental impact on consumers and retail markets. this will price out new consumers even more than a $600 PS5 and $80 games will. this will make games less accessible and more nickel-and-dimed. this will make games impossible to share irl without giving your console up, and will stop institutions like libraries from being able to loan copies of modern games. and most importantly, it will be for a minimal profit, as most of the sales in video games are already digital.
this is such a staggeringly catastrophic piece of news that i'm shocked it wasn't said by nintendo. congrats to sony for one-upping them in anti-consumer practices.

The hammer and the anvil
what confuses me, and even slightly scares me on an existential level, is that asoiaf is one of the most profoundly empathetic works ive read; there is an interiority afforded to people of every kind, who are very unlike the author from an outsider's glance. i see reflections of myself in these texts, of my mother and my father and my friends, and people whom i know and love and hate. and yet despite it all, we see the limitations of the perspective of the author--as a white western man who grew up in the '50's, subject to his own internal unexamined biases despite it all. and if even this text can't transcend the biases of its author, of the accident of birth that made up his demographic context, then what hope do i have of transcending mine? are we all doomed to be stuck slouching back to the narrowness of our own demographic perspectives, no matter how many exercises in empathy we engage in?
@cathriana:
okay i slept on it and now im a little less dramatic about it. i agree with everything you said here. i also think that many of his worst biases in writing also show up when he's trying to rehabilitate a pre-existing fantasy trope, like the seductress or the noble savage or the Foreign Eastern Land; the points where he essentializes or fetishizes a character are almost always justified for character POV reasons, although in doing so he still 'does' orientalism
Of course it goes without saying that I am hopelessly dependent on the ingot

like did you know that trees lower the surface temperature by up to 19° and grass by up to 24°... access to green space is access to safety in a climate crisis and it is a massive site of inequality because poorer areas tend to have less green space and thus get hotter. urban trees are an equality issue as well as a climate issue. sorry it's not a magic bullet that solves everything but sometimes you need to pick an issue that helps a bit and focus on that. this might not be yours. it's likely going to be mine in the future when my health issues allow me to take it on. if we each pick a thing we can make a difference
