The SAVE Act has passed in The House. It makes it illegal for a woman whose last name does not match her birth name to vote as a "citizenship verification measure." The main way around it is being able to present your passport at the polls since that proves your citizenship.

Look up your Senators here and raise hell on their phone lines about this blatant attempt to disenfranchise millions of women:

here's a summary of house rep morelle's (NY-D) comments from the hearing on july 10, 2024 when this passed the house. this bill would:

prevent most americans from registering to vote using only a driver's license, including REAL ID-compliant licenses

require additional documentation beyond standard photo IDs to prove citizenship

only accept passports as standalone proof of citizenship, which only 48% of americans have (nice middle finger to the 130 million citizens who don't have one)

prevent military personnel from using military IDs alone, requiring they also provide records showing US birthplace. new registrants deployed overseas will be unable to register due to in-person requirements

prevent native americans' tribal IDs from being accepted unless they show place of birth in the US, which most don't

screw over married women as described by OP

The only issue you'll ever encounter is that once in a while to get a married couple discount at a gym or something maybe you'll need to present your marriage certificate, so don't lose it

Your mother in law does not need to know what your legal name is if you're going by his last name socially

I mean, I kinda wonder why any woman with ADHD ever would change her name anyway, seems like a giant pain in the ass.

As you know, because you are on Tumblr and therefore you know some trans people, it is quite possible to socially go by one name and legally go by another. In fact if you know anyone with a nickname, you know this fact. Well, it works for last names too.

And then get out and protest. Don't have a protest near you? Organize one. If you have contacts with unions, civil rights organizations or advocacy groups work with them to try to get the word out about protests and get more people involved.
