a few weeks after the wedding shane has a dream that ilya dies on the ice and it feels so real and shakes him so hard that he wakes up BAWLING and he's scared and disoriented and kind of mad at himself because he's a grown man in his thirties and he's crying over a dream, only he can't prove it was a dream because ilya is currently in boston with svetlana, and what if he actually is dead and the trip to boston was a dream? and then anya wakes up and starts fussing and yipping because shane is fussing and crying and they end up in a feedback loop of noise while shane calls ilya who, thankfully, picks up on the 4th ring even though it's like 3am and talk him down

this gets worse and worse the closer they get to their first game against montreal to the point that he starts hesitating for a split second before stepping onto the ice at practice. and no one would ever notice except ilya, who knows him so well and as such can see the absolute horror of shane losing his feelings of safety on the ice. and they've had enough middle of the night panic attacks now for him to clock that shane isn't okay, even if he can't really admit it to himself, but ilya has no fucking clue what to do about it other than kiss him and hold him when he cries and skate hard and fast when they're playing
