In Super Mario World, whenever Mario completes a level, the path to the next level is revealed in a rather slow tile-by-tile manner. It is easy to assume that the effect is deliberate, to lend cinematic weight to the achievement of having beaten the level.

However, it turns out that the game is actually trying to perform the animation as fast as possible but is legitimately encountering slowdown due to the console not being able to process that many operations on each frame. The footage compares the speed of the original game's animation on the left and the speed after letting the game make use of a co-processor chip (not included in the original release) to achieve the speed the game is trying to display the animation at on the right.

Please note that this post is merely making a statement about the game from a programming perspective (the code is trying to execute faster than the game displays it) rather than an artistic perspective. We do not know if the slowdown was merely tolerated by the designers who would wish for the animation to be faster, or whether they actually wanted it to be this speed and the slowdown came in handy in that regard.

the way that undertale calculates the effect for monsters turning into dust is unreasonably taxing. its like, peak "undertale code" moment.

at the end of the game, when asgore is killed either by the player, flowey, or himself, his scene where he turns to dust is very, very slow. this is not done with a line of code, its literally the game lagging due to the amount of objects it produces. while "unintentional," the effect is actually really striking and emotional, which is probably why it was left in the final game.

I once heard a quote that said “Traditional art is the decoration of space while music is the decoration of time”. It’s a quote that I think about often.

I talk to my friends who consume media of their choice while they draw, getting to drink in more inspiration while they still continue to create. I compare it to my creative process of placing down a note or two before frustration drives my starving mind to seek out something different.

I look on the internet and I see that we have been able to fabricate space to allow more beautiful creations to exist. Social media platforms are happy to have them, since you may look at them for as long as you’d like, with a lot of looks being quick so that you move onto the next post or the next advertisement.

We have yet to fabricate time. It remains constantly flowing. If a song is three minutes, then a song is three minutes. If you wish to experience it all, you must spend all three of those minutes. It’s not as compatible with an environment for relaxed scrolling or for delivering advertisements. So most social media websites don’t bother even allowing people to post audio files unless attached to an eyecatching video. And for the places that do, many people are looking at it while having down time, sometimes in public. It can’t be enjoyed until they sit down and dedicate the time to it. It’s a very needy medium. Maybe that’s why I gravitate towards it

But perhaps that is the strength of music. When you find music that you know you wish to pay full attention to, you’re willing to sit in silence and listen. You’re willing to fully drink it in. Your time on this earth is limited, and you willingly spend it on this music.

"off of australia" is also a bit misleading; the distance looks small on a map, but that's because your brain is comparing it to the entire pacific ocean on the other side.
