do u guys understand how creepy the pledge of allegiance is though like every day when ur a kid everybody just chants how great america is every morning it’s creepy
You do that every morning???
EVERY MORNING.
wait
wait
is this a real thing i thought that was just in the simpsons
Wait, other countries don’t do this.
*whispers* Not even Russia
I remember when my dad had a conversation with me
because I asked him what the Austrian pledge of allegiance was (because he’s from Austria)
and he said “we don’t have a pledge of allegiance”
and I said “why not?”
“honey, think about what training your children to mindlessly pledge to a flag, without really knowing what they’re talking about, sounds like to Austrians”
“oh. hitler.”
“exactly”
RE FUCKING TWEET
You don’t realize just how creepy it is until you are the only one not doing it
I never thought about it at school or at any point until I was an adult at my kid’s cubscout meeting and, um, yeah, NO THANK YOU.
I’m very confident that “millenials partying during COVID” is being exaggerated beyond all reason to avoid having to talk about young people catching coronavirus after being forced back into service, retail, and other high-risk jobs.
June 2 2020 - Antifascists marched against the fascist president Bolsonaro in Curitiba, Brazil, burned a Brazilian flag, and chanted antifascist slogans including in solidarity with Black Lives Matter protests in the US. [video]/[video]
A five years old black boy died in brazil today. He was with his mother, Mirtes Renata, while she worked as a maid for Sarí Gaspar Côrte Real. She was doing her nails in her apartment and told Mirtes to go walk the dog, and Miguel wanted to go after his mom when she left. Sarí pushed a random number in an elevator and left the boy there, alone. He fell from the 9th floor. The woman paid a R$20,000 (3.930 dollars) fee and was free. The news protected her identity because she was the mayor's wife.

[Image and video Description:
The image is a screenshot of a tweet by @/SOFIALIVE. It reads: “please share this it’s so important”. Underneath is a still from the video.
The video is from TikTok, made by a user called @/joshconnects. Visible on the screen is an iPhone open to the home screen and the text “Must have police shortcut IOS 13”. The video is narrated by a male-sounding voice.
The only thing visible on the iPhone’s screen is an app called “shortcuts”.
Narrator: “Here’s a shortcut that’s a must have, and let me tell you what it is. Here we just go to shortcuts, and this is the basic layout”
He clicks the app icon and the shortcuts app opens.
The application has a dark background. At the top of the screen is the app logo. Underneath the logo are the words “add shortcut” and “review the contents of this shortcut”. There are two headings underneath, the first titled “when I run”, and the second “do”.
The first, “when I run”, has one gray box underneath it, for the title of the shortcut to be typed in. The one he has open is called “police”.
The second, “do”, has several gray boxes underneath, each of which has an action to be done if the shortcut is activated. Two are visible on the screen. The first has the logo for the messages app at the top and the command “send text ‘I’m getting pulled over by the cops. It’ll send u a recording of it all after’” followed by an option to add recipients. The second box has the camera app logo at the top, and gives the command “take video with back camera”.
Narrator: “This is how you make a shortcut”
He indicates with his finger the title “police” under the heading “when I run”
Narrator: “so this one is called ‘police’. So I can tell Siri to run this shortcut right when I get pulled over. And then I can set my phone down and do whatever”
He scrolls a little bit further down the page.
Narrator: “what this shortcut does is it sends a text message saying ‘hey, I’m getting pulled over by the cops. I’ll send you a recording of it all afterwards’ to a recipient of your choice. And then afterwards it is going to send the video and the current date to the recipient of your choice.”
The screen now shows the third and last gray box under the heading “do”, which has the messages logo at the top, and dictates the command to send the video and the current date to a recipient of your choosing. Underneath the gray box is a disclaimer from Apple saying: “Apple does not review shortcuts outside of the Gallery. Running shortcuts from untrusted sources can put your personal data at risk”. At the bottom of the screen is a large red button labeled “add untrusted shortcut”. Smaller blue text underneath gives the option “don’t add”.
Narrator: “And then afterwards it is going to send the video and the current date to the recipient of your choice. Now, this was built by one of my buddies so there it is right there.”
He points to the “add untrusted shortcut” button.
Narrator: “add untrusted shortcut. But this is how you make it. You can make it yourself. I think this is really really important, especially with everything going on right now. We can all benefit by this running in the background, and it’s incredibly simple. Here’s the overview one more time.”
He scrolls up so that all three of the gray boxes under the heading “do” are visible on the screen at once.
Narrator: “so make this, and add it to your shortcuts, and make sure you’re safe out there. If you want more shortcut videos, leave a comment down below.”
The video ends on a dark screen that shows the logo of the TikTok channel, which is the letters “JC” surrounded by a circle that is made up of a plug chasing its tail, followed by the channel name “Josh Connects” and the account handle “@/joshconnects”. The TikTok logo is visible at the bottom of the video.

Would it be possible to tag any of the blm things with a tag too? I am feeling super overwhelmed because all i see is the bad news and the support things, but i can't donate, and keep feeling incredibly guilty for not being able to do so
(( OOC: I can, but you shouldn’t feel guilty if you’re unable to donate financially. There are plenty of ways to help, including donating through watching videos where ad revenue supports BLM causes (one of the posts I’ve reblogged talks about this). I will also state that now is not the time to shut down because of guilt and discomfort. Shame will only get in the way of us educating ourselves and keeping our eyes open to what’s happening in the world. Research ways you can help outside of donating. Sign petitions, follow BLM activists and POC creators, purchase from Black businesses, etc. Comfort needs to be put aside because comfort is what makes us complacent. If you’re uncomfortable seeing what’s happening then take a brief moment to think about how painful and frightening it would be to be faced with this reality every day, and unable to “log off” or avoid the topic because of the color of your skin. We need to stop avoiding topics because we feel guilty or uncomfortable and focus on the human lives that are being affected and taken. ))
Something I wish more people would understand…
What’s her name?
Her name is Jane Elliott. She was a former schoolteacher, now she’s anti-racism activist, feminist and LGBT activist. She’s tiny, mean, and boss as fuck.
She’s known for her “blue eyes-brown eyes experiment” where she divides a group of volunteers from the blues and the browns. The minute the people walk in, the blue-eyes know they’re not welcomed. She makes them wait in a separate room, gives them shitty chairs, bad food, and shows them less respect. And (obviously) it causes all sorts of discomfort and rage, but that’s precisely her point. It doesn’t help that most blue-eyed volunteers happen to be white as well. Sometimes they get the message, sometimes they don’t and leave, sometimes crying or screaming. And Jane Elliott says that’s exactly what minorities want to do everyday of their lives, but they simply cannot do.
Did I mention she’s boss as fuck?
Jane elliot guys. I saw her experiment when I was 13 and it made me understand racism like nothing else.
She started the experiment on her elementary class and let me tell you, seeing the footage of little kids behaving better than the adults in the recreated experiments once it’s revealed why they’re doing the experiments just reminds me how early you’ve got to teach your kids about tolerance and injustice.

the lea michele situation is actually a prime example of why we should be wary of performative activism right now. if you are supporting the cause by protesting, donating, posting your support, etc. that’s great! but this problem goes so much deeper than just police brutality.
every single non-black person who has posted #blacklivesmatter this week needs to take a step back and analyze whether or not their actions (not just their words) have shown that they truly believe that statement. it’s a clear and obvious choice to speak out against the brutal murder of an innocent man. however, if you are not making the obvious choice every day to speak up for us when your friends/relatives make racist jokes, if you are not listening to and respecting the black people you know in real life, if you have not sat down to analyze the ways you actively benefit from this system, if you have not worked to start unlearning the biases you were raised with, or if you thought “black lives matter” was a controversial statement until this week, do not pretend to care just because everyone is talking about it right now.
when these protests are over, there will still be many battles to fight. this is not a game, and this is not something you post about just for likes and clicks. if you are resting easy right now thinking that you’re “one of the good ones” for showing public outrage over a situation that should anger any reasonable person, you need to do more. racism is not something you can pick and choose when to be against. we don’t get to pick and choose when we experience racism. so if you’re going to get involved with this situation right here, right now, then you need to be ready to hold yourself and others accountable for anti-blackness in all other areas of your life.
white people can and SHOULD reblog!
Everything Changes: Part 2

Remus throws on his PJ’s and hops into bed, trying to bounce away his excess energy. Lyall enters the room and sits down next to Remus, who proceeds to talk excitedly over his father as he starts reading The Hobbit, a muggle story Hope introduced him to.
Lyall: *shakes his head, tsk-ing* Oak-and-shield… bit on the nose, isn’t it? That’s no name for a dwarf.

To me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time, the most beloved. His command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world - no-one had ever done it before. Perhaps no-one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.

Please go watch Sex Explained on Netflix. Not only is it a great resource for the basic sex education that is sorely lacking in the U.S., but some of ya’ll need to take a deep breath and remember the difference between fantasy vs reality. This purity culture thing that we’re going through right now is directly harmful to responsible, healthy sexual expression. BTW this woman, Lisa Diamond, is a noted psychologist and has been pushing for greater understanding of womens sexuality as a whole.

This is an old practice.
It’s called entrapment and, to the best of my knowledge, it is illegal to do this.
Except it’s not, because to prove entrapment you need to prove that a) police instigated the crime, b) which you would not otherwise have committed. Leaving bait lying around is passive enough that it probably doesn’t qualify for point A, and makes it nearly impossible to prove point B. Nasty, sleazy, underhanded, actively detrimental to the communities they’re supposed to be “serving,” but legal.
imagine using tax money to buy food, and instead of just giving the food to hungry people, you fucking use that food to bait hungry people into a crime of desperation.
The definition of entrapment needs to change because this shit is entrapment
*May Queen approaches Teddy* I hope you're enjoying the festival, Teddy, and I'm glad that Vic chose tonight to bring you. It's fitting, really. Tonight it about the creation of unions and new starts together. What a perfect way to show someone that you love them, don't you think?
