it's sad that the poll tourney trend ended three years ago because a) i liked being so invested in absolute nonsense and b) i really want to do a "favorite victims of fandom misogyny" or "favorite hated female character" tournament. i'm just really in the mood to see people passionately defend unfairly maligned women (fictional) in my notes. would anyone be into this? i might try to do it anyway, but also it's kind of a bummer to run a poll where only like three people are participating.
okay, this post got like ten notes, that's enough for me to at least give it a try. if i actually decide to go forward with this, i'll probably post the submission form again when i create a victims of fandom misogyny tournament sideblog (also if anyone has a better name idea than that mouthful, please suggest it!) but in the meantime, let's start submissions here. here are some rules:
no real people (obviously there are lots of real life women who are victims of fandom misogyny, but i feel like having those women compete in a poll against each other and also against fictional characters would be kind of disrespectful to the actual real life shit they were put through)
no men!!!! idc if he's like a woman to you, this tournament isn't for him!!!!
obviously, misogyny does not have to be the only factor here, it just has to be one of the factors. if racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc. are also part of the problem, do not hesitate to bring that up in your submission! it's highly relevant! the last thing i want is a tournament consisting of only cis straight white women, especially because so many of the hated/mistreated women of fandom are also marginalized in other ways that the fandom hates them for.
idk if this is a rule exactly, but just to clarify, this tournament is about which one of these characters is your favorite. it is emphatically not about trying to quantify which character is the biggest victim of fandom misogyny. that seems like an utterly exhausting and pointless thing to argue about, please don't subject me to that. i just want to see people defend their favorite overly maligned or mistreated girlies in my notes, i cannot stress this enough
characters don't have to be overtly hated to be victims of fandom misogyny. they can also be perpetually ignored in favor of men, or constantly characterized as the wise mom friend who the fandom has apparently decided has no desires or goals or needs besides being a sounding board for their favorite white boy, etc.
there's no time limit on this thing. even if the hatred/fandom mistreatment has died down and the character in question has been re-examined since, if there was ever a period in which they were subjected to fandom misogyny en masse, they count.
that said, don't choose characters who are generally universally beloved and always have been but you saw one person shit on them one time in a misogynistic way and got annoyed. i hate when that happens too, but it's does have to be a trend, not just one annoying guy, even if the guy in question is really annoying.
submit as many characters as you like!
you can submit a character here:
we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write gen fics. we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write character studies and stories with no focus on romance or sex. we have to get on our knees and thank the brave soldiers in fandom who write about minor characters and friendship and family with no focus on romance or sex. i know it’s hard to care about characters in a world that seems to only revolve around ships but i see you. and i love you
The real question is are there any good nonbinary equivalents to aunt/uncle bc I refuse to be a Pibling
Knee-jerk reflex answer is "Crankle"
#TextileTuesday:
“Border fragment of wool with a continuous band of #hummingbirds and fringelike appendages representing beans. Early Nasca [Nazca, Peru, c.1-450 CE]. Pollination of bean plants by birds may be suggested here. Border was formed using a needle-knit stemstitch.”
On display at American Museum of Natural History [41.2/6321]
(Reblogging with what I put in the replies so that I can attach images!!)
This is such a beautiful example of Nasca needle knitting!!! I took an art history course on Andean visual culture and we had a whole lecture dedicated to Nasca textile art. Needle-knitting is done with a single needle and is the Nasca are the only culture that did this particular kind of textile knitting until the 20th century when it was brought outside of the south coast. This is a really interesting border because it's the second example I've seen of the hummingbird pollinator theme. Here's the one that I saw in the class I took:
This hummingbird border (while a lot less vibrant) defines a lot of what's so special about Nasca textile IMO. Each hummingbird is 3d and double-sided. They're also only about 1.5" (3.81cm) tall (tail-tip to beak-tip). It's an extremely detailed form of knitting!
For people interested in some of the history of Nasca textile, this article about the Paracas Textile (the most famous example of Nasca needle knitting) is a great introduction and overview: https://smarthistory.org/the-paracas-textile/
Here's the Paracas Textile for your viewing pleasure:
And a close-up of the border:
I could talk about this a lot more but I'll save everyone's time and point them towards the website above LOL
(P.S. - hummingbirds show up a lot in Nasca visual culture as pollinators. The hummingbird is also one of the most famous Nasca lines! For those curious, yes, we talked about what those mean in my class. According to my prof, they're actually water guides that track the path of water underground and during rain so that the Nasca people could access irrigation and drinking water!)
Excuse us we have a rabbit hole to go down
Material: Nazca needle-knitted fabric! The details are truly something else

I passed a flower shop next to a tattoo shop and at first I laughed because I thought it was ironic and then i freaked because IMAGINE YOUR OTP IN A FLORIST/TATTOO ARTIST AU
OMG I COULD TOTALLY IMAGINE THEM LIKE THAT IT WOULD BE SO PERFECT
I cannot BELIEVE a post I made when I was 13 is circulating! And also apparently started this trope? I thought somebody had the idea separately and it blew up that way😭
Holmesian hands study, my turn for a love letter to Holmes' hands.

people in my replies arguing for their fav white guy???
a character who truly, legitimately goes “but why does that matter?” about their feelings when someone who cares about them asks. and the sudden falling of everyone around them’s faces as they realize that this person doesn’t recognize themself as someone who needs or should be taken care of. i want Everyone to hurt. surprise at the idea, worry for them, horror at not having noticed. do you see this person who doesn’t think of themselves as a person?

#BATHENA HONEYMOON CRUISE IS A GO #EVERYONE REJOICED
when i was a tiny baby queer (aka a 24-year-old), i went to my first pride festival probably three months after i kicked ex-gay therapy to the curb and came out to my parents. being the people they are, my parents came with me. they weren’t really sure about this whole gay thing, but they loved me and wanted me to be safe and happy and wanted to be involved in what was important to me, so they came along. (i also think my mother still might have thought i might get drugged or murdered or beaten by a protester of which there were plenty.)
anyway i wanted a memento of my first pride, you know, and this one vendor was selling keyrings, and i liked it, so i bought one. do you remember those italian charm bracelets that were all the rage like 10-15 years ago? it was a keychain like that, and it had a rainbow rooster, a rainbow cat, and then just a rainbow, and so I bought it.
i run into my mom a couple of vendors over and she goes oh you bought something? what’d you get? so i showed her, and i was like, “I’m not sure why it’s a rooster and a cat. Seems kind of random. But I liked the rainbows.”
and my mom, who was some form of minister’s wife for most of my childhood and teenagerhood, stares at me like she thinks i’m joking.
“What?” i say.
“…it’s a cock and a pussy, Jules,” she says flatly, and that is the story of how i died at the age of 24 while attending my first pride festival.
I love how every June this one gets dug up and passed around again, lmao.
oh no is this what we’re doing now
…relic…
*crumbles and blows away on the wind*

Started coparenting a baby with my best friend, and I think I’m in love with him. What do I do?
I (M 54) recently became the father of a baby girl through kinship adoption. While I thought I could raise her on my own, it became apparent very quickly that I could not. It turns out knowing how to care for a baby’s health is a fraction of the things you need to know. One night in a fit of desperation (after 3 hours of her nonstop crying no matter what I tried) I called my best friend of 20+ years (M 50). He came over immediately, got the baby to settle down, and then just kind of never left. Now it’s been 2 months and we take her to the park together, switch off feeding/changing/and checking on her during the night, and send photo updates to each other constantly.
The other day, I walked into the kitchen and he was wearing a shirt covered in spit up and had her up against his shoulder. I could hear him singing Dancing in the Dark to her while he swayed her back and forth, and I just froze. When he looked up and noticed me leaning against the doorframe he smiled at me… and it just hit me. I’m in love with him.
Now I don’t know what to do or how to act around him.
Am I just imaging things because he’s helping me take care of a baby? Or can you really fall in love with someone after knowing them for decades?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Grace tries copying the tones using the keyboard.
Rocky hums. “Close. Skip first note.”
“Why? You always include that.”
“This means… of Rocky, possessive. Of the speaker.”
“My.”
“Correct. But only for names.”
“So you’re calling me…?”
Rocky repeats the word: “My Grace. Yes.”
Oh huh! I hadn't realized I didn't post this one here on Tumblr! I finished this study in early March and have plans to have it be one of 3 pieces to go together 🙂↕️
[ID: Digital painting of Sherlock Holmes and Toby the dog, a study of Leyendecker's "Man with a dog" (1909) for Collier's Weekly. Holmes is in his coat, striped pants, top hat and grey scarf, Toby following a trace by his side. They are painted mid-motion. /end ID]
Carrying it was indeed the intention! I don't understand victorian walking sticks that are meant to be decorative (? For the most part?) tbh and didn't really do much research on this one apart from looking at photos of different walking sticks Holmes has throughout the Granada series - I made the grave mistake of forgetting to cut it off where visible and now it looks comically long ><
Sometimes it seems the gentlemen are holding onto them and sometimes they lean on them while walking - it would have made more sense if I didn't give it that kind of handle but it was the one I was mostly looking at in Jeremy's hands and defaulted to that one. Whoops.
I promise it's supposed to be off the ground LOL
that being said, that grip is very unfortunate 😂 it makes no sense that he'd be gripping it like that, much less when it's off thenground
when I do the other two I should rework this part to make it make more sense 🙂↕️
(and do actual proper research on these walking sticks. That one's genuinely my bad)
