I rewatched the marineford arc last night. Why? WHY do i do this to myself 😭😭

if i write her too soft, then i’m perpetuating patriarchal stereotypes. but if i make her too tough, too hard, too cold, then suddenly she’s “unrelatable” or “unlikeable,” or i am stripping her of her "womanhood." if she’s too competent and gets shit done, she’s a mary sue. if she makes mistakes, she’s embarrassing. if she's sensitive, she's a whiny bitch. if she’s sexual, i’m catering to the male gaze. if she’s not sexual at all, i’m a prude, or i’m writing a different stereotype. there’s just no way to win.

it’s not even about the audience most of the time, it’s about me. when i write a guy (especially when i’m writing spicy stuff, let’s be real), i feel like an observer. it’s freeing, it’s distant, it’s almost like watching from the outside in. no one is reading a messy male character and assuming i secretly hate myself, or hate women, or hate femininity or whatever else. but the second i try to write a woman like that—especially in intimate or emotional scenes—it’s suddenly ten times harder. it feels way too close to home, like i’m accidentally stripping myself bare for an audience, no matter how much i try to separate myself from her.

it’s like there’s this built-in limit. i can’t just “play” with her the same way. everything i write about her feels loaded, political, personal, even if i swear it isn’t. i can’t just play, can’t just mess around, can’t just make her messy or dumb or horny or brave or scared or selfish or anything without this voice in the back of my mind going, “and what does this say about you? what does this say about women?” like somehow, writing a female character is always shouting, whether you want to or not: this is a woman! this is a woman!

maybe I just really suck at writing.

Unfortunately for you, I’m a left-leaning feminist. So yes, when I talk about my struggles writing women, I’m looking at my own biases and the social structures that shaped them.

I have complicated feelings about writing women. I often catch myself treating female characters as symbols before I treat them as people. That’s not because I’m “too leftist” or because feminism taught me to hate women. It’s because I grew up under patriarchy, where women are constantly flattened into symbols, ideals, warnings, fantasies, and moral lessons instead of being allowed to simply exist as full human beings.

So don’t twist my post into some “see, feminism makes women hate women” gotcha. That’s not what I said, and it’s not what I meant.
