The guy is constantly paying for sex on his way somewhere, or even IIRC in the middle of watching a parade. How is he actually encountering this many sex workers, given that he probably isn't eg walking to the Swedish Mint via the red light district?

A quick romp through the history of prostitution tells me that law and society were very inconsistent on the subject. The various churches were anti, of course, but culturally it was often tolerated rather more than it is today. In some places it was even seen as assisting marital fidelity; I guess using some poor random woman for sex didn't 'count' in the way a prolonged affair would 🙄

But still. Is there a sex worker on every street corner - even in wealthy areas - touting for business, in which case just how standard *is* lots of extra-marital sex for Regency gentlemen? Or is Burr just optimistically propositioning random lower class women, in which case how is he so often successful?
