I really do think that the beheadings were primarily intended to stop the Great Conversion. I also recently realized I was operating under the assumption from the very beginning that the plan was never to kill either Louis or Lestat, merely to incapacitate them long enough and definitively enough to miss the concert (apparently this was not a common assumption in the fandom). Why? They had Fareed for one, who —per earlier in the season when discussing the Budapest experiments and estimating that Louis could survive about 2 hours post decapitation and that Lestat could theoretically survive 8-10 hours— already knew that death did not occur immediately at the point of decapitation (as did Louis, who seemed already aware of that fact when he went on his own beheading spree in talking to decapitated heads, which makes me believe some amount of continued life after beheading was decently common knowledge).
As such, I also think that Armand, worn down more than a little bit by the emotional upheaval of the last years and especially by the last weeks (I’m looking at you, “Big Boss”), saw the opportunity for what it was and cracked. I hear what Assad said that Armand wouldn’t have gone through with it, and indeed he didn’t go through with it. He had Fareed there to monitor Louis and sew him back together. If the point was to torture Louis until he died, he could have approximated how much time Louis had left for the purpose of his own torture plans just by observing him.
Furthermore, I think this hypothesis is evidenced by the fact that Fareed did not look to be there all that willingly or happily (and further evidenced by Fareed’s obvious discomfort during that shoulder massage scene and his general tense affect). If Fareed were there just to monitor for the purpose of research, we would’ve seen him with the same sort of disengaged, stony-faced affect we’ve seen him with previously in Dubai and on the tour bus. But he was not happy, he was uncomfortable. When Armand asks towards the end how Louis is doing, he says “terrible”. If he were willingly there to “research” a subject post-beheading to the point of death, he wouldn’t have cared. He might’ve said, “declining” or something similar. But he did care and grew more visibly anxious the closer Louis got to death, making me think Louis was never supposed to die. The more Fareed believed he might, the more uncomfortable with the situation he became.
Similarly, because Lestat was estimated to have the capacity to survive 8-10 hours post-decapitation, I wonder if the plan really was to let Lestat die or if putting Lestat’s head in a bag and walking off with it served as a pressure point for Louis and a bit of catharsis for Daniel. They had 8-10 hours, it was a fairly safe move given that Louis would only have about 2. The Talamasca then interfered before we could properly answer the question or explore it further.
So no, I don’t think this was inherently OOC or diverging from the established plot. I just think that Armand and Daniel had a plan, saw the opportunity for a side quest, took it, and were then interrupted.

I am actually extremely fascinated about the IWTV/TVL discourse now that I'm a ways out of all the gut reactions. Because the first series is explicitly about how it is possible to tell a story from differing and at times competing perspectives--it is in the show's explicit framing that all of our "flashback" sequences are showing us characters from Louis' perspective and understanding. Now, right off the bat, this is actually a major challenge for viewers: because it's actually destabilizing our sense of the characters immediately, BUT without the constant narrative reminders of bias otherwise inherent in textual narration. And I think it's actually part of visual narration's allure and danger that we are primed to understand what we see visually as the "truth," whereas a textual narrative seems to hold itself more distant, and therefore keep itself more open to questioning and scrutiny.

Martha and Jonathan find a baby in an ark. There is no note with him, but they see how tenderly he was swaddled, how desperately sent here, and they look at each other and they know. She was on the Kindertransport. He lost his parents to the camps. Martha's eyes say "He is like us." Her voice says, "Moses in the bullrushes."
They take him home. They give him the Hebrew name Kal-El and the American name Clark so he will fit in. They know what it is to be different. There is no Hebrew school in Smallville so they teach him at home, and study Torah together. When he shows special abilities, they wonder to each other if he is the Moshiach. Not for the strength of his body, but for the strength of his kindness. He always seems to be helping others, delivering them from harm, as he was delivered to them. They never tell him this, but they teach him about the obligations without measure. He's a natural.
At school, he is side-eyed for being different. When he displays eccentricities, the villagers shrug and say "maybe it's a Jewish thing." The Kents make sure he values his education, and is always home for Shabbas dinner.
His is bar-mitzva'd at the nearest shul, a few towns over. They didn't know his birthday, so they chose one near Parshat Shemot. Now they worry that was too on-the-nose, but he gives a moving d'var about the obligation to speak truth to power.
As he comes into his own and tries to be a hero, he hides his identity from the public, not out of shame, but to keep his adopted parents safe. They've been persecuted enough.
When he moves to the big city for a job at a newspaper, Pa is so proud he cries. Clark uses his journalistic skills to expose corruption, give voice to the neglected and oppressed, and research his own origins. When he learns the truth about Krypton and his birth parents' desperate bid to send him to safety, Ma and Pa are not at all surprised that they were right.
When Clark brings Lois home, he assures his parents she is a nice Jewish girl, but they're just glad she's a mensch. They step on a glass to remember the destruction of Krypton, and stand under a chuppah quilted by Ma.
A white billionaire spews lies about him, trying to spread fear of the stranger in their midst. He comes out in public and says "There's nothing more American than being an immigrant."
When the government turns against immigrants, he stands on the side of the protestors and protects. Tear gass does nothing to him. He makes himself a shield. He writes article after article in the Daily Planet, making sure the public knows what their government is doing, that immigrants know their rights, that the powerful are put on notice. When they start rounding people up, he says "Never again."
He shows up at immigrant detention centers, armed with miracles. And says "Let my people go."

me trying to explain how chinese names work for non-chinese writers: look its very simple. you must NEVER EVER EVER refer to anyone by their last name OR first name ALONE. this is a cardinal sin and will have you laughed out of the rednote comment section. The sequence is SURNAME FIRST NAME, and it is SACROSANCT. unless you're writing dialogue from the 21st century, then most people can refer to your character by their first name in conversation. but only if it's a two-character name. if the name is one character long, the surname HAS to be added, otherwise it sounds Weird. also this only works for dialogue, the narration must ALWAYS use the full name. that is, unless, mayhaps, you're writing about the classical-to-medival period, then historians will sometimes refer to people by their single-character given name. or the person in question will use their single-character name in the third person during a conversation. they will just throw that in when vibes are correct. also, in premodern china, its very common for women to be named shit like "Big [surname of father] or Little [surname of father]" based on birth order and this is the rare instance where the name goes before the surname. look its very self-explanatory, when in doubt you just need to go with your gut. now tune in tomorrow where i explain how courtesy names work--

Eridian Headcanon #I (On Cuteness)
My Personal Headcanon™ is that like Humans, Eridians have a ingrained instinctual sense of what is 'cute' - that, also like us, is tied to the similarity to the appearance and/or the behaviour of their offspring (which I will call 'pebbles' from this point on.)
So what if... humans do a few things that are adorable to Eridians...? Think about it! There are fully grown creatures that we find adorable because they do something that humans find inherently cute! Heck - look at this fandom - a lot (most) of us probably want to be best friends with a ROCK SPIDER ALIEN. (I know I do!) So imagine: Grace: *Bumps into table for the 1000th time like a pebble learning to get their footing* Grace: *Humming unbeknownst to him an Eridian phrase he heard Rocky say once and sounds like a pebble trying to learn to speak* Grace: *snoring which happens to sound just like pebble happy-rumbling-purr sounds*
Grace: *tapping random rhythm not unlike a pebble trying to get a good view of something* Grace: *Curling as close to Rocky as possible through the xenonite barrier like a pebble seeking comfort* All of which would remind any Eridian of a pebble, and so Rocky finds it all adorable. Also: Rocky: Friend-Grace is gross leaky space blob, statement! Grace: ??? *Was just minding his own business when he randomly sneezed* *sounded just like a pebble 'sneezing'* (Translation: You're adorable - how dare you)
Been going down the iwtv rabbit hole lately, so here's a silly lil thing I drew after one of the interviews with the cast during SDCC
blessed with the divine vision that bb shane was a fucking STICKLER for equal application of rules when he was an itty bitty. he'll accept the rules just fine, but they will now be HOUSEHOLD rules.
and most of the time it's fine. shane's bedtime is 7:30 pm because he is so itty bitty, but yuna and david have always just gone to their room after that so bb just assumed they were also following The Time To Sleep rules.
which is all well and good until nana is visiting while staying with her sister, it's 7:40 pm, and she is just cooing and delighted at bb shane just repeating "night NIGHT" over and over from the doorway to the living room because she is not understanding that this is not him being cute and saying goodnight.
this is attempted enforcement of the rules because nana, it is time for NIGHT NIGHT and you are clearly NOT ready for night night, and to TOP IT ALL OFF!! YOU ARE KEEPING MAMA AND DADDY FROM NIGHT NIGHT. RULES!! BROKEN!! RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS LITTLE BABY FACE. >:(

Something a lot of people forget about Holmes is that, because ACD was Like That, his 'relatable audience insert' Watson is actually a lot weirder than Holmes is
That is something that is so fun about reading the books, Watson being the narrator adds so much because you slowly realize how bizarre his perspective is and how strangely grounded a lot of Holmes’s ‘strange’ behavior is. There was something so fascinatingly wrong with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and he passed it on to his self insert.
I’ve said it before but most of what is ‘wrong’ with Holmes is largely understandable and a lot of what is wrong with Watson can be explained by him being a British man from the 19th century but there are just some things about Watson that make you go ‘Dude, what the fuck?’
