when my sib was little, my mom put pumpkin in everything. puffy pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.
one thing that stayed a beloved food we've kept all these years as a thanksgiving fave was pumpkin crescent rolls.
1 pkg active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F)
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup shortening butter is great
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp salt
5 to 6 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl. Stir in the pumpkin, shortening, sugar, egg, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl; turn greased side of dough up. Cover. Let rise in a warm place until double, about one hour. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)
Grease cookie sheets.
Punch down dough. Divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a 12 inch circle on a floured surface. Spread margarine on circle. Cut into twelve wedges. Roll up the wedges tightly, starting at the rounded edges. Place rolls on a greased cookie sheet with points down. Curve slightly. Let rise until double, 30-45 minutes.
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes.
originally from a Betty Crocker holiday cookbook. We used butter rather than shortening. forever making 2x and 3x batches they're so fucking good I spend like a month having a carefully rationed hoard of them for breakfast with eggnog every year.
Bothersome beast, comforting friend
The US having an entire city in the middle of the desert dedicated entirely to gambling sounds like a thing other countries would make up about the US as a joke but its real and no one bats an eye at it
They also do divorce
You know I held myself back from going off on an infodump about the history of divorce in Las Vegas for the sake of this joke but the amount of people reblogging this version from me and not getting my history based joke about how divorce was important in shaping the economy is Las Vegas is driving me a little bit crazy
The people want an explanation so an explanation I shall give.
Basically Nevada used to be like. Nowhere. Even more nowhere than it is now. They broke several rules when they made it a state actually because the population wasnāt big enough to justify it but they wanted Lincoln to get more electoral college votes or something. I dunno.
Point is, thereās not much in Nevada. Sure, thereās silver mines. Thereās local tribes who are pretty cool. Thereās wildlife. Thereās some neat mountains. Not much water though and water is needed for most industries and large scale civilization.
This vast emptiness ended up making Nevada what it is today though mostly because of crime. Itās hard for the feds to stop your crime when youāre surrounded by a whole lot of nothing. Is the state and federal government gonna trek through the Nevada desert to scold you? I donāt think so.
Local governments today in Nevada can often trace themselves directly back to criminal organizations and corrupt groups of politicians, including the city of Las Vegas and the very large unincorporated community of Paradise which is actually where the Las Vegas strip is. Why is Paradise, Nevada still an unincorporated community despite having over 180,000 residents? Because if thereās no city government thatās one less government entity your casino has to pay taxes to. Duh.
And these crime people and casino owners and easily bribable politicians despite their many problems did figure something out. Tourists like doing things that are illegal in other places. Californian tourists in particular. And one of the illegal things that all Americans really but especially Californians wanted to do was get divorced.
Around 1930 Nevada became one of the first states to make no-fault divorce legal. Not only that but the required waiting period became six weeks. Not only that but only one spouse had to live in Nevada for those six weeks. To this day, the waiting period for divorce in California is still six months. This was huge.
This becomes a whole industry. Not only is gambling legal in Nevada but now divorce is too. When a couple decide mutually that they want a divorce but thereās no legal reason for it where they live, one of them, usually the woman, goes to live in a resort in Las Vegas or Reno for six weeks (often called a divorce ranch) and then they can get divorced.
And while one or both spouses are there, they can gamble, get pampered, see entertainment, meet other people. Then they go home after their divorce and tell their friends all about it. Now all their friends know that thereās gambling and entertainment in Vegas. And now they know about the divorce ranches. More money in the Nevadan economy.
Las Vegas is a bright shining tax evasion island in the middle of the desert built on entertainment, gambling, crime, and divorce. God bless Nevada and god bless no-fault divorce.

There are people ā some in my own Party ā who think that if you just give Donald Trump everything he wants, heāll make an exception and spare you some of the harm. Iāll ignore the moral abdication of that position for just a second to say ā almost none of those people have the experience with this President that I do. I once swallowed my pride to offer him what he values most ā public praise on the Sunday news shows ā in return for ventilators and N95 masks during the worst of the pandemic. We made a deal. And it turns out his promises were as broken as the BIPAP machines he sent us instead of ventilators. Going along to get along does not work ā just ask the Trump-fearing red state Governors who are dealing with the same cuts that we are. I wonāt be fooled twice.
Iāve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times Iāve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.
As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.
The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population ā so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.
The prospect of that march sparked a legal fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. It was a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU who argued the case for the Nazis ā contending that even the most hateful of speech was protected under the first amendment.
As an American and a Jew, I find it difficult to resolve my feelings around that Supreme Court case ā but I am grateful that the prospect of Nazis marching in their streets spurred the survivors and other Skokie residents to act. They joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation and built the first Illinois Holocaust Museum in a storefront in 1981 ā a small but important forerunner to the one I helped build thirty years later.
I do not invoke the specter of Nazis lightly. But I know the history intimately ā and have spent more time than probably anyone in this room with people who survived the Holocaust. Hereās what Iāve learned ā the root that tears apart your houseās foundation begins as a seed ā a seed of distrust and hate and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe a lifetime ago didnāt arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
Iām watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. A president who watches a plane go down in the Potomac ā and suggests ā without facts or findings ā that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. Or the Missouri Attorney General who just sued Starbucks ā arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too āfemaleā and ānonwhite.ā The authoritarian playbook is laid bare here: They point to a group of people who donāt look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems.
I just have one question: What comes next? After weāve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities ā once weāve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends ā After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face ā what comes next.
All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we donāt want to repeat history ā then for Godās sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it.
I swore the following oath on Abraham Lincolnās Bible: āI do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, and the constitution of the state of Illinois, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor .... according to the best of my ability.
My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country. We donāt have kings in America ā and I donāt intend to bend the knee to one. I am not speaking up in service to my ambitions ā but in deference to my obligations.
If you think Iām overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this:
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. All Iām saying is when the five-alarm fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Those Illinois Nazis did end up holding their march in 1978 ā just not in Skokie. After all the blowback from the case, they decided to march in Chicago instead. Only twenty of them showed up. But 2000 people came to counter protest. The Chicago Tribune reported that day that the ārally sputtered to an unspectacular end after ten minutes.ā It was Illinoisans who smothered those embers before they could burn into a flame.
Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, Illinois, and do not let the ātragic spirit of despairā overcome us when our country needs us the most.

iām starting a collection
the collection grows!!!!!
Donāt forget this one.
I step into the crime scene once again, and just like last time... it's a mess. The bastard's killed again. They call him The Artist... man's sick in the head, thinks he's gonna be the next Michelangelo. His "canvas"? The human body. Maybe I'm just not "cultured" enough. But when I look at this mess of gore and body parts, all I see is... wait holy shit from this angle it looks like a fish! Ohhhh it's like a perspective trick! Oh shit that's so cool. I mean. Ahem. It's not cool enough to justify murdering twelve innocent... oh my GOD from THIS angle it looks like a MONKEY! It's like, two in one! How'd he even DO that, this guy's a genius!!
the edit itself
this edit is getting taken down from tiktok every time someone reuploads it, its straight up censorship at this point

Green eyes shouldnāt actually be considered an eye color. Itās just not common enough, itās a VERY SMALL percentage of the population, 1-2%. Green eyes are also caused by an irregular mutation. Most people have blue or brown eyes, so those are the two eye colors.
All the āgreen eyesā positivity is actually a bad thing, by the way. Having green eyes is linked to higher rates of retinal melanoma. Youāre celebrating something dangerous that can cause suffering.
And besides, most people with āgreen eyesā lean closer to blue or brown anyways. They should just make up their minds and be brown eyed or blue eyed. And if itās too hard to tell, they should get corrective surgery (because green eyes are dangerous, and associated with more difficult medical care!) or at the least wear contacts so they donāt confuse people. But also they should be required to
I hate to sound like this, but green eyes are a far more recent development than blue eyes in the mutagenic history of humans. So humans werenāt created to have green eyes.
And hazel eyes? Those are just a variant of brown eyesācome on, theyāre far closer to brown than green. They just have a couple greenish traits. And thereās no way thereās that many green eyed people, or a wide variety of eye colors⦠Itās just not natural.
I donāt have a problem with green eyed people, they didnāt ask to be born that wayābut thereās just too few of them for it to be an actual eye color. We donāt need all this āgreen eye positivityā or putting green eyes in media. The internet is making people delude themselves into thinking itās more common than it really is.
