Saving Money on Medicines and Healthcare
If youâre in America like me, Iâm sorry. Things are a bit tough and scary right now. Iâm seeing a lot of people asking for help for paying for medicines and medical procedures, either because they have no insurance, or what insurance they have sucks, or whatever new way theyâve found to screw you.
Donât despair. Iâm with you.
I was paying $400 a month for insurance in 2015 when I was hospitalized with DKA. That is, I was Type 1 Diabetic and didnât know it. I almost died, and when I made it to the pharmacy after to get my insulin, I was kinda wishing that I had.
$900+ for insulin. Two insulins, both needed to keep me alive. Weak and exhausted, I broke down at the Walmart pharmacy counter.Â
But my mother was with me. She held me as we both cried, then she got up and started searching on the internet.
See, drug companies know theyâre shit, cause they can give their drug away if you know where to look.
Help Paying For Medicines: Discount Cards
First step, find out who makes your meds and go to their website. You can even just do a Google search â***** discountâ -or â**** discount card*.Â
For instance: Lantus, made by Sanofi. Type in âLantus discountâ and the first link is their website, with links to sign you up for a discount card.
https://www.lantus.com/sign-up/savings-and-support
It costs $400+ per box of pens. With the discount card, it costs me nothing.
Now, your mileage may vary. Most of the times before, it cost me $45 per box, which is still steep, but it helps. No idea why the amount changes. Iâm sure there are mysterious heathcare industry reasons.
Help Paying For Medicines: Make the Call
Yâall gotta get over your fear of making phone calls. It could kill you.
If you canât find online discounts for your drugs, call the manufacturers themselves. You may be on hold for a while. Itâs worth it.
Back in the 1990s, a new drug called Enbrel was released for rheumatoid arthritis. Before that, they just gave you some Tylenol and told you to suck it up.
My father needed this medicine. Problem: it was $2000~ a month. $350, with insurance.Â
Now, we were poor Midwesterners. $350 a month just less than the mortgage was. We paid that for years. It was bad.Â
Then, one day, my mom called the manufacturers. She got a discount.
$20 a month. For a medicine that cost $350 a month with insurance. For a medicine that retails for $2000 a month.Â
Make the call. It might not work out, but you have to try.
Paying for Medical Procedures: Mortal Kombat
I like games. Theyâre an escape and a release from the stresses of the day.
I hate playing games in real life.
Which is what youâre force to do when dealing with health insurance in this country.
You have to call. You have to ask questions. You have to fight.
If youâre bill is higher than you can comfortably pay, call your insurance company. Ask about every single charge. Tell them youâre having trouble, tell them youâre money problems.Â
It might work. Itâs worked for me beforeÂ
But it might not. You have to try.
Also, call the place where the procedure was done. Tell them your problems, tell them your money troubles.
They want your money. Theyâll take whatever money they can get.Â
Sometimes theyâll only put you on a repayment plan. But that way, you wonât be getting notices from them, screaming about how theyâre going to send your account to collections.
Sometimes theyâre drastically reduce your payment so that you can repay in full now.
Either way, do it. Itâs exhausting and frustrating, but itâs so worth it.
In ConclusionÂ
It sucks, I know. And few if any of these options may help you. Thereâs so much variation in doctors, drugs, procedures, medical offices, state laws, federal laws etc.Â
But once upon a time, I didnât know about any of these. They count on you not knowing, or being too busy, or thinking that itâs too much trouble.
Donât let them win.
Your life is worth so much.
When I complain about being a âgiftedâ kid who grew into a talentless adult I donât mean that Iâm not trying to work on my talents or anything
I mean that the âgiftsâ I had are useless
Reading books above my age isnât a talent when Iâm not eleven
Knowing big words isnât a talent when Iâm not a kid, itâs just growing up
Itâs just a weird thing that happens and it feels shitty when youâre brought up being told youâre an exceptional child only to realise as an adult youâre just average
This
I did a lot of reading about gifted kids and especially gifted adults when I got my âdiagnosisâ because I was told I was gifted at 23 and well, it serves no purpose to have a confirmation that youâre gifted at 23
Thing is, gifted children are not amazingly better than everyone else. Gifted brains just donât work the same so they build their skills in a different order
Basically when youâre very young, most people brain learn social skills and how to interact with their peers, but gifted brains are already at the next step which is how to understand and interact with the world
That makes the stereotypical young children that are very good at math, always asking questions about how things work, very upset when they donât know a thing
But the thing is, when everyone gets older, theyâve mastered most social skills and now turn towards understanding the world
But the gifted children have already mastered that part and are turning towards how to build social skills. Except thereâs no one left to teach us about that! Because weâre late to that party
Long story short, at the end everyone, gifted or not, goes through all the necessary steps to make functioning adults, so the difference that was obvious as a child has disappeared
But us gifted people often end up with social anxiety and impostor syndrome because we are actually less equipped than others to face a world that taught everyone to be confident and talk to people while we were busy reading books above our age
âŚâŚâŚâŚâŚthat last paragraph.
damn.
this was written about me.
well fuck
Itâs not all doom and gloom, though. People who learn social skills âon timeâ often donât really understand how they work, they canât always explain or think about them. They didnât use adult tools to learn them so they donât have adult models of them. Like someoneâs first language, theyâre used to their brain learned it on its own, and theyâre used to their brain telling them what to do. When the time comes to think about how language works, or explain it to someone else, or change their word use, itâs harder.
Often, when people get stuck in adolescent relationship patterns late into adulthood, itâs because thatâs when they learned their relationship skills so theyâre tied up with all the adolescent issues.
If you learn your social skills as an older adolescent or adult, youâre less likely to have teenage baggage. Itâs easier to make observations and choices about whatâs important to you, because you already have to think really hard about how to do it, so thinking about what to do becomes more obvious. Itâs often easier to help other people who are learning, too.

That moment when you leave work sick by using FMLA leave, but feeling guilty the entire drive home and needing to talking yourself out of the shame of it all, amirite?
I spent so long listening to people tell me that I was lying or faking just to get out of work that half the time I donât know if Iâm actually sick or not.
I am sick. I needed to leave. Itâs justâŚ.ya know?
Lantus vs. Toujeo
I leaned how to be diabetic with Toujeo. Things were regulated enough; all lows were my fault as I learned how much bolus insulin to take with meals.
Now, suddenly, no one wants to cover Toujeo, so they switched me to Lantus.
Long story short, my blood sugar just dropped 100+ points in 45 minutes.
I love leaving work early and driving a half hour home when Iâm about to pass out.
[[image description: Tweet from Jenna Rice @jenna_niccole: âtogether, we can manage your care,â says the hold message, after Iâve been on hold for 15+ minutes & trying to get this script for 5 weeksâ]]
This is a shoutout post for everyone who wants to move out or live more independently but canât. For those of us who canât handle all the ânormalâ housekeeping tasks like cooking and cleaning. For those of us who canât take on ânormalâ paid employment. For those of us who need that extra help or those people but wish we didnât. Youâre not alone in this.
Has anyone else noticed how, when you have a chronic condition of some kind, that thereâs always the basic assumption from people around you that youâre not already doing everything you can?
Itâs all about the illusion of control. People who are healthy like to believe they can always keep being healthy if they do the right things. They donât want to think about how good people get struck with terrible circumstances for no reason. So they keep assuming that if they got sick, they could do something to make it better. And if youâre still sick, that must mean youâve done something wrong or not done enough.
Nail. Head. The same attitude can be seen in how a lot of people talk about poverty.

My dad expects that, should Tr/ump win tonight, my black co-workers will attempt to beat the shit out of me. I mean...what the hell, man? Middle age white man, scared of everything.
Three kinds of attraction and why itâs important to know the difference
Aesthetic attraction:Â âI want to look at you.â You think someone is beautiful, very pleasing to the eye, but you feel no desire to touch them.
Sensual attraction:Â âI want to cuddle you.â You feel a great deal of affection towards someone and you want to hug them, hold them, perhaps kiss them, but with your hands never straying below the belt.
Sexual attraction:Â âI want to fuck you.â You want to do things of an explicitly sexual nature with someone.
Why is this distinction important? Because I didnât realize I was demisexual until the age of 27 because all my life I thought that aesthetic + sensual attraction was the same thing as sexual attraction. I always thought that finding someone beautiful and wanting to touch or kiss them was sexual attraction, but realizing that itâs not, that sexual attraction means actually desiring sexual acts with a person, has changed my life and explained so many things. When I was figuring this out, a number of other people commented that they felt the exact same as me, so I think this is some pretty important stuff to spread around.
Click here if you think might be asexual, Â or here if you think you might be demisexual.
The best part about having a panic attack after finding out that my insurance is going up to $500/month? "Calm down. It happens to everyone. Jesus." - Dad Then he yells at me for being mad at him. So that's possibly $500 less a month I have to survive on. I'd like to get away from him, but dammit...
My bodyâs trying to kill me, but hey, I still got work to do

I hate when doctors ask âhow are youâ
im at the doctors office how the fuck do you think I am
Firing My Doctors
I've developed serious, urgent, and obvious problems recently. Thing is, they're symptoms of both of my most pressing illnesses. So neither one of my doctors wants to treat them, saying that it's the other ones problem. I'm changing doctors. Threes nothing left I can do. I'm trying to stay positive, but dammit, this is so frustrating and depressing.
