ok no but we really need this service. I read a horror novel whose protagonist was a gay british aristocrat studying classics at oxford and going to Tibet in 1900. And the first roughly third of the book was assuring the audience he was from a woke christian denomination but didn't believe in god and thought that was silly and also his lower class manservant/ boyfriend/ childhood best friend was the top and so he never thought to try and order his BF around. So he's like, woke in a 21st century way. we need to have a conversation about how the "everyone is 12" theory of politics now doesn't only apply to conservative men who want to kick the bad guys' asses and then go home and eat a steak their bangmommy made just for them (NO VEGGIES!!!) but also to adult women who are literally afraid of other people having sex and being sexy. it's like there's been this massive regression among women in their 20s where we've gotten rid of feminism and replaced it with a new form of purity politics that requires never saying anything bad about another women unless you find a new and creative way to call her a whore. the misuse of "she caters to the male gaze" as a new form of enlightened slut shaming, labeling any woman who wears a short skirt or has sex with a man as "not a girls' girl" and "a pick me," the intense overreaction to celebrity affairs or even just shit like the summer house mess where a woman is now dating another woman's ex even though there was no overlap and the "relationship" was just kind of a situationship that fizzled but now these little girls are online demanding both people involved in the new relationship lose their jobs and not get any brand deals, the panic over mildly sexual content in literally any capacity like ads or an instagram post in a crop top, the compulsion to link everything back to the epstein files, the monthly meltdown over sex scenes on tv and in movies. everyone is 12 and AFRAID of sabrina carpenter.

Fun fact: The vast majority of people who have a penis are terrified of losing their penis. There is a whole cultural Thing about that, and deliberately going to the Penis Removal Doctor in the first place is a strong indicator of wanting to end up without a penis.

J and I just finished S4 of TNG in our marathon, and a detail I've enjoyed is just how much Picard is almost the exact opposite of TOS Kirk. I don't think even Riker is much like the original Kirk (he works far better when he's understood as his own person), but Picard is so much the anti-Kirk that it's this kind of fun reverse mirror.
I think the persona that each captain projects in his capacity as captain reflects his fundamental character in an inverted form. What I mean is that Picard's and Kirk's respective outwards personas essentially compensate (arguably overcompensate) for the excesses of their basic personalities. Picard projects this dignified, cerebral, gracious, somewhat above-it-all persona to correct for his naturally hot-blooded disposition, while Kirk projects a warmly emotive yet composed, animated, and decisive persona to correct for the off-putting chilly intellectualism and near-ruthless guile of his underlying temperament.
I think that by nature, Picard is actually the more charismatic of the two, but prone to a degree of incurious overconfidence, and wary of his own capacity for aggression—and his repressed weakness for women, it turns out. Kirk is more brilliant and reflective, but very high-strung, and most wary of losing control and falling to the analysis paralysis-driven indecision he's naturally prone to. (Contrary to reputation and Picard's own struggle, TOS Kirk has little concern with being led astray by the ~allure of women; he has—and uses—more feminine wiles than most people he encounters, and usually his main concern is how soon he can resolve the crisis and escape.)
And an interesting way this outer persona vs inner temperament reversal plays out quite publicly is through each captain's interactions with a non-human culture they have a clear affinity and admiration for, and navigate more easily than most humans.
In TNG, it's emphasized multiple times that Picard has an unusual flair for navigating the cultural norms of the Klingons and fits in well with them. He's interested in their laws and language, he has an easy rapport with many of the Klingons he encounters and is able to win the respect of many of those who don't like him to begin with. He serves as both the arbiter in their succession dispute and as Worf's cha'DIch with aplomb.
Meanwhile, in TOS, Kirk has a highly marked respect for Vulcan culture among the humans we see. He finds their scorched planet beautiful, is revealed to be a T'Pau fanboy, and blatantly favors Spock over McCoy in the long-running thematic/cultural conflicts between them, from the first episode McCoy appears in ("You could learn something from Mr. Spock, doctor. Stop thinking with your glands"). The latter favoritism is not only for gay reasons (though those certainly occur), but even more because Kirk's own values and perspective and inclinations align more closely with Spock's than with anyone else's. The two of them operate on a shared wavelength that is less about Spock's submerged human qualities than Spock in his entire being.
We see it all the time, but here's a fairly representative example from the S2 episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?":
SPOCK: Verbose, isn't he?
KIRK: Insulted, Spock?
SPOCK: Insults are effective only where emotion is present.
KIRK [with a nod of crisp approval]: Good. We'll tackle him together.
Meanwhile, Kirk's intelligence (both as a resourceful tactician and nerdy humanities guy), thoroughly considered ethics, and self-control are central to Spock's admiration for him: again, not just as an expression of his human side but informed by Spock's cultural values as a Vulcan. When Spock condemns Trelane for "intellect without discipline ... power without constructive purpose," it's extremely clear who he's contrasting him with, and all the clearer in contexts like "Court Martial" when he testifies in a court of law.
SPOCK: I speak from pure logic. If I let go of a hammer on a planet that has a positive gravity, I need not see it fall to know that it has in fact fallen ... human beings have characteristics just as inanimate objects do. It is impossible for Captain Kirk to act out of panic or malice.
Or when Kirk is split into two warring halves of his personality, and Spock, not in a situation for their usual teasing banter, describes Kirk's usual self as "properly controlled and disciplined" and sharply reminds the noble, intellectual, fearless, but passive and indecisive half of Kirk of his normal perspective:
SPOCK: You're the captain of this ship. You haven't the right to be vulnerable in the eyes of the crew. You can't afford the luxury of being anything less than perfect.
KIRK: Yes, I do know that, Mr. Spock. What I don't know is why I forgot that just now.
Also, in whatever late draft of "A Piece of the Action" was used as the basis for James Blish's novelization, Kirk speaks Vulcan to signal Spock, while Picard readily speaks Klingon at different points in TNG.
So both Kirk and Picard have these fairly persistent, non-human cultural alignments in addition to their strongly human identities that don't especially fit the personas they generally try to project. And the Kirk/Vulcan Picard/Klingon alignments definitely don't fit the pop culture version of them, but do very much track with their actual temperaments and predilections.
