not putting this person on blast but how is it so difficult for people to understand that merlin doesn't fucking owe his deeply personal and life threatening secret to anyone. morgana is losing her mind, which is the exact reason he SHOULDN'T. for his safety. she can't be expected to act rationally and there's literally no way of telling whether knowing merlin has magic would improve things or make them much, much worse. read: morgana telling uther he has magic and getting him fucking executed. merlin isn't responsible for morgana or her choices or her mental health. stop pinning that on him. he doesn't owe his secret to anyone. ANYONE. you're also removing morgana's agency. what is so difficult about this concept
If your argument is that a Merlin ship is unhealthy because of Merlinโs secrets, you better clarify that itโs unhealthy for Merlin, not his partner. Merlin believing that he has to hide inherent parts of himself or else the people he loves will run him through or light his pyre is not healthy for him. The person who makes Merlin feel too unsafe to reveal his magic is the reason for the secret-keeping, not the victim of it. And if they actually follow through on Merlinโs fears, even mildly reject him, then that point strengthens.
How exactly is Merlin hiding that he has magic in a kingdom where the punishment for magic is death, surrounded by people who directly enforce that law, unhealthy for the people who have made an oath to kill him? Why do you think Merlin is in the wrong unless he prioritizes the feelings of the ignorant people threatening him and other magic folks? Thatโs like saying itโs toxic not only to defend yourself against someone whoโs trying to axe-murder you, but to put your own feelings about it above theirs.
Considering the first thing Merlin saw in Camelot was exactly that, why is the expectation on Merlin to reveal his magic and risk his life (and others) to give every bigot in the tri-state area a โchanceโ to prove they wonโt murder him (even though they can reject their prejudice at any time), rather than putting the responsibility of self-improvement on that individual?
Merlinโs desire to maintain his various relationships is not a crime, itโs human nature. If the people heโs grown onto have only conditional love for him, which is quite possible given the knowledge available, he doesnโt need to do anything that he knows can or will provoke their violence. He lies because he is their victim. They are not a victim of his self-defense.
I Hate the notion that people "deserved" to know about Merlin's magic. Like...baby Merlin deserved not to have to hide who he is for fear of the people he loved killing him if they found out. Merlin deserved not to love somewhere where his literal ๐ฆ๐น๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ was illegal on pain of death. Merlin deserved not to have the first things witnesses when arriving at Camelot is the execution of someone just like him. Merlin deserved not to constantly live in fear that he'll be found out and persecuted for what he IS. Merlin deserved safety and acceptance and so do all the magic people.
Arthur, the knights, even Gwen did NOT deserve to know Merlin's secret when they uphold the law condemning it and him. Do not get to feel betrayed that he didn't trust them when they gave him ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐บ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ต๐ฐ When they routinely say that magic is evil Infront of him. Merlin not trusting them with the knowledge of what he is isn't him being a coward or scared for no reason. It's extremely justifiable dear that they constantly reniforce. And no Merlin doesn't have to reveal his magic for them to let go of their bigotry. Merlin doesn't have to hold the hands of these grown men through basic morals. Screw everyone that blames Arthur never overturning the ban on Merlin not revealing himself. It's just victim blaming and gaslighting. To insist the person being opressesed is overreacting,or irrational or their oppression is their own fault. Please stop that.

As much as I love Gwen's reaction ( I never doubted her truly) it truly highlights how...๐ฅ๐ช๐ด๐ข๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฏ๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐จ Arthur's is in turn. Like Gwen, who is also Merlin's best friend (has been before Arthur actually)who Merlin has ALSO been lying to for years(because what other choice does he have?) . Gwen who technically also lost he brother and father to magic. Gwen who has seen FAR less of the good that magic can do. And all she says? "I'm pleased" . Meanwhile Arthur's out here saying he should have killed Merlin the day they met and being a generally ungrateful bitch. I say it's a good thing he was actively dying actually. It's so discouraging and you people wonder why Merlin never told him shit.

Well actually I DON'T think Merlin would allow Arthur to execute him when he could easily use his magic to escape. I think he would instead preserve his own life and not die pointlessly and brutally at the hands of his friend. But a lot of fanfic writers disagree with me on that so idk
bedridden today due to agonies hence why im yapping about bbc merlin again but god balinor was such a wasted potential. they had to kill him bc otherwise there would have been one (1) sane adult present. picturing whenever merlin would be like โgaius said that uther is good for the economy actually and so i must protect him from being assassinated by this grieving motherโ balinor, eye twitching, โson he sentenced me to death which left your mother destitute and would burn you on the pyre next morning if he knew i found the time to father you while running for my life. and that old traitorous geezer said WHAT againโ
Everyday I think about how much better Merlin's life would have been had he had more than Gaius and kilgarrah as support system(both equally terrible in different ways),since everyone else who knew about his magic kept dying.Like imagine him balinor to turn into for advice? And hope and just well... support.
The whole "Merlin was literally born for Arthur" thing makes me feel so gross like I literally just had to stop reading a post bc they said it and it made my skin crawl
Merlin is his own, separate person and just bc he had this destiny forced on him does not change that fact. He deserves better than basically being considered utterly worthless unless he's serving Arthur. I'd try and be more eloquent but god it just makes me feel sick I hate it I hate it I hate it
I despise that whole "Merlin was only born to serve Arthur" speech in season 5 and that entire notion. Cannot stand reading a fic that had Merlin say that or that he uses his magic only for Arthur. Merlin is his own person and his magic is HIS. He deserves to use it for himself whenever he wants. And I actually kind of hate every person that got this idea into Merlin's head that he was only born to serve Arthur it's disgusting. He's more than that, and he has a life outside of it.
I don't understand why the Merlin fandom is constantly saying that Merlin betrayed Arthur by not telling him about his magic? Like, Arthur didn't even say that. Merlin simply lied to him to keep himself alive. It was Arthur's own fault that Merlin had to lie to him. This is not even close to the same level as the betrayals Arthur has suffered from other people
Merlin snaps just a little;
Everyone feels guilty about it. Especially when they realise that their apologies wonโt beย accepted so easily.
The dreaded magic reveal has happened.
I wonโt write it out, it doesnโt really matter how it happened; maybe there was a fight and it was a last desperate attempt on Merlinโs part to save everyone, or maybe he was just stupid and oblivious and cast a spell without realising someone was looking. Or maybe it was neither, maybe Arthur just finally pulled his head from his arse and put it together.
Like I said, it doesnโt matter.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, is gathered in the Roundtable Room. Mordred, Gaius, and Lancelot look quietly worried. Morgana and Gwaine look an odd mix between protective and upset. Leon, Elyan, and Percival look angry, though more at the secrets and lies than at the magic. Gwen just looks heartbroken, unable to look at the man she thought she knew everything about. Arthur is stony-faced, furious and embarrassed; at having been lied to, at being made a fool of, at giving everything to a man who had done nothing but lie to him.

Is now the right time to come out and say that I hate the whole "murder twink Merlin" thing? Idk if makes Merlin this unrepentant mass murderer who takes life as easy as you please for no reason, and that's not who he is at all. Merlin's a character ruled by his morals( which aren't infact him being obsessed with Arthur I despise that notion) so many of his dilemmas throughout the series happen due to his morals.(Ie,Mordred. Morgana. Etc) Life is precious to Merlin and he doesn't take it thoughtlessly or purely for Arthur's sake that's bullshit. He tries to look for another way first and he certainly doesn't enjoy it.If there is another option where no one does he will DAMN we'll find it and take it. It takes me out so quickly when I see a fic that Merlin flippantly come back from killing a sorcerer like no.And while we're at it Arthur has the bigger kill count between the two of them
A popular idea I've seen in the fandom is that "Merlin should have told Morgana and Arthur about his magic and if he'd just done so non e of this would have happened so it's entirely his fault" and while may very well have prevented the tragedies that occured, ive always found that Highly unfair.
Let's start with Morgana,no Merlin didn't handle her situation the best way he could I agree. And I absolutely sympathize with how awful her it was. However saying that Merlin ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ฅ Morgana his secret because they were in the same position is ridiculous. Since -for one- they really really weren't. Morgana's position as a noble and uther's beloved beloved ward added dreadful complications and didn't really help her mental state, but it also afforded her protection that Merlin -as the bastard peasant servant - couldn't even dream of having. If they had ever gotten caught,it would have been ๐ฉ๐ช๐ด head on the -very literal- chopping block. People ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ญ๐บ consider how this would have benefited Morgana and don't consider the risk to Merlin in this equation.
And people are missing another crucial factor, ๐ฎ๐ข๐บ๐ฃ๐ฆ Merlin telling Morgana about his magic would have prevented her from going Darkside....and maybe it wouldn't have. And all it would have done is give her some terrible ammunition to use against him. Morgana certainly didn't seem to mind using Camelot's anti magic laws for her own benefit to get rid of gwen -who and done ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ to her-.and is very quick to try and get rid of Arthur despite knowing him her whole life.Imagine what she would have done to Merlin?
Which brings to my next point, this idea that it's entirely Merlin's fault what Morgana became because he didn't help and also the poisoning, which is blatantly false because..he ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฅ. He led her to the druids(which backfired yes but he ๐ต๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฅ ) against both Gaius' and kilgarrah's advice.
Now the poisoning,I agree Merlin made a mistake here I think he should have told Morgana about his suspicions instead of tricking her(although I completely understand why he did it). Saying this one act is what set Morgana on her path is blatantly false, mind you Morgana figures out that Merlin only poisoned her because she was holding the sleeping curse on Camelot, like that doesn't remain a secret and it didn't change anything for her. There were a lot of other factors involved and Merlin did NOT ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ Morgana to become evil. He didn't force her to do all the terrible things she did later. Those were ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ณ choices. And maybe it would have been different if Merlin had admitted he had magic, and this is speaking as someone that ๐ธ๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ Merlin to reveal magic, however it's insane to say that he ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฅ to, especially with so much at risk(his life, gaius' life, Arthur's life, the entire future of Albion) Considering Merlin only reveals his magic willingly to like 2 people.
Saying that Merlin (or even Gaius although he's FAR more to blame what this man did is wild) is entirely at fault for Morgana removes Morgana's responsibility for her own actions and puts it squarely on Merlin's shoulders, which is entirely unfair.
Moving on to Arthur, this one pisses me off even more. Cannot describe how many fics I've seen where a magic reveal happens and Arthur not only threatens but and/or/ banishes Merlin and the narrative frames it as ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ง๐ช๐ฆ๐ฅ because "Merlin lied to him". Bitch Merlin lied because he would have literally gotten killed if he didn't??. Merlin keeping a secret that would have gotten him banished at best and executed at worst is somehow equated to Arthur ๐๐๐ซ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง'๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ or hell even WORSE. It's diabolical. If the fic has Merlin APOLOGIZE for lying or feeling ashamed for keeping it a secret I'm out, immediately. As if his literal existence wasn't illegal.
"well if Merlin had just told Arthur about his magic than he would removed the ban" maybe so...but why?? Why does Merlin ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฅ to reveal his magic and everything he's done for Camelot for Arthur to realise that the genocide is incredibly cruel and unjustified and to stop it??
"oh it's because he's never seen the good in magic" that's bullshit. Aside from the fact that magical people don't need to prove that to begin with. Arthur HAS SEEN the good magic can do. Like contrary to popular belief Merlin wasn't sitting on his ass the entire time. He ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ด that someone healed Gwen's father. He ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ด that dolma and dragoon helped him asking little in return aside from" hey maybe stop killing my people and think for the minute that it would take you to realise that magic isn't innately evil". He ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ด that the magic ball of light helped him in the cave. He knows that will the 'sorcerer' died to save him.He has nightmares about the screams of druid children. He knows mordered- a child- was almost executed for no reason aside from being a druid. Why is ALL OF THAT not enough?? Why does he need more proof?? He has all the pieces to realise that magic doesn't actually corrupt and he still doesn't put them together. Why does Merlin have to risk his life and safety and freedom to teach a grown man a moral lesson he's more than capable of learning by himself and CHOOSES not to.
Speaking of,maybe Merlin's magic being revealed would have prompted Arthur to finally do something about the ban...and maybe it wouldn't have.
It's just like with Morgana, you people act like the positive consequences of that decision are absolute and never consider the -potentially disastrous - negative ones.
It's just as likely (if not more so considering his canonical reaction) that Arthur would have banished Merlin. And let's look at the consequences of that shall we?
Banished Merlin can't protect Arthur quite as well, limited by both distance and lack of information(assuming he still wants to which I wouldn't blame him if he didn't)โ> Arthur lasts two weeks max -and that's me being generous- before he dies to the latest magical threat, since Merlin isn't here to save his assโ> Albion never happens and magical people never get their freedom (if the prophecy that the show is built on is to be believed).
Reminder that it is not just Merlin's life on the line here. But ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ are relying on him to protect Arthur so he can make Albion happen, but even if it was ๐ซ๐ถ๐ด๐ต Merlin's life and safety at stake,he would have still been justified in not telling Arthur.
Why?? Simple, if you were gay and your friend/employer/loved one was very homophobic, would you come out to them? No right?? Because you know they won't accept you and will treat you differently than they have up until that point.
How many times does Arthur openly condemn magic and sorcerers Infront of Merlin? Way too many count. He does it at the ๐ง๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ'๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ด๐ต ๐ง๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ who DIED to save him. And it doesn't get much better after that.
Arthur's mentality towards magic the entire series is basically "one step forward, three steps back" he goes from being somewhat open to it one episode and back on his whole "magic is pure evil" the next. Like when he promised dragoon that he would remove the ban when he became king if dragoon healed Uther but went back on that when dragoon -seemingly- killed him.
Almost like....magic is simply a tool and wether it's good or bad depends on its user(he's so close to figuring it)
Arthur alternates between accepting, and even using magic, when it benefits him and condemning it when it doesn't (Uther would be so proud and I mean that in the worst way possible)
It's enough to give me whiplash,I cannot imagine what it was like for poor Merlin. His terror was completely justified.
That's not even getting into how he treats Merlin in general and how he literally threatened to banish him for talking about Gwen and agravaine. Imagine what he would have done about as something as bid as Merlin having magic?
And his reaction when it's finally revealed proved that Merlin was right in keeping it a secret, the man literally says he should've killed Merlin the day they met and it takes him days to come around. It's probably a good thing Arthur was actively dying I dread to think what he would have done otherwise.
Merlin never feeling safe enough to tell Arthur about his secret is a failure on ๐๐ณ๐ต๐ฉ๐ถ๐ณ'๐ด part ,not Merlin's.
In conclusion,no Merlin didn't owe the secret that would have literally gotten him killed to Arthur or Morgana, even if it would have solved alot of problems. And it's not his fault everything happened the way it did. I'm not saying he's sinless,he made alot of mistakes but stop blaming him for other people's decisions. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk
I can't get behind modern aus where wei wuxian willingly drops out of college because canonically that man does not quit. he'll be going through horrors beyond comprehension and he's still like writing manuscripts and perfecting inventions and going grocery shopping. like is he acting normal and regular? of course not. but you can't convince me that wei wuxian would drop out of college for any arbitrary modern reasoning you could come up with when in canon he was essentially dropped out of the sky into a Literal pit of despair immediately after undergoing dangerous invasive surgery and getting beat up and still managed to invent an entire new kind of cultivation and learn how to play an instrument in Three Months while starving and dying. I'm sorry but I don't think a minimum wage job and an 8am class is going to be taking him out any time soon
WWX is extremely resilient both mentally and physically and I'm tired of that aspect of his character being glossed over.
He invented an entirely new cultivation path ๐ข๐ง๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ being dropped from a cliff into hell ๐ข๐ง๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ getting his core carved out of him in a 2 day long torturous surgery
He invented things that made night hunting ten times more efficient while half starved on a mountain full of corpses with the entire cultivation world calling for his head
His core was the strongest of his entire generation even though he started later than his peers
He got shot in the chest by an arrow, pulled the arrow out and threw it back at the person who shot it hard enough to ๐ฌ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ him and survived for another three months, both with no golden core and presumably with little to no medical attention since wen qing was dead
He survived being gutted and (I think?) also with no golden core
He killed a 400 hundred year old monster with the help of only one other person while hungry and injured
Modern WWX would be working three minimum wage jobs, half starving,on the verge of homelessness and he would ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ญ๐ญ be at the top of his class with perfect grades and would probably find time to tutor on the side. He has a life threatening surgery and makes it to class the next day because if he has a decent teacher and likes the material you get he's showing up. He's graduating with two degrees for fun. He's getting a PhD at 20. He's publishing research papers that are breaking the industry. He would be inventing some revolutionary items in his bedroom at 3 am. He's in an orchestra. Every three weeks He's getting an academic award for something. He's babysitting on the weekends.he knows more about the subject than the teacher does.he's winning national archery competitions.
WWX is crazy and competent and he ๐๐จ๐๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ. Dropping out? Never heard of her.
what exactly does "morally gray" mean? i'm confused by this term and its application because it's thrown around for almost every character i see.
i've seen it thrown around for HC, WWX, NMJ, HX etx
what's the criteria here for morally good, gray and evil?
In literature, "morals" are categorized by what is considered good or bad by the narrative. A "morally good" character embodies the aspects considered good by the text, while a "morally evil" character does the opposite, usually in direct conflict to the morally good character(s). A "morally gray" character is one who displays behaviors of conflicting morality. An example with be a character in a superhero comic who murders regular people as a job they enjoy but also searches for missing kids to return home as a side hobby (this is a made-up example). They are not a hero like the superhero who fights to do good at any cost, but one would not say that they were completely evil, either, in a story narrative where the villains drown their sons based on rumors or use people as fertilizer and have no such redeeming qualities. These moral designations are 100% about characters' morality in the world of the story, which means that even characters from separate works who behave similarly can have different moral alignments (the gun-for-hire may be a willing participant in the superhero comic but a slave who takes every chance to rebel against the role in another novel).
However in fandom nowadays, people throw around "gray morality" to mean "character I think is mean (to other characters I like)" or "character that does things I, personally, consider bad." For example, "Wei Wuxian is morally gray because I think necromancy is evil, even if he used it for good," despite the fact that the "necromancy" in the novel is shown to be a legitimate cultivation path which is morally neutral. "Hua Cheng is morally gray because he runs a gambling den" despite the fact that the gambling is done by willing participants and no one is forced to place bets or even enter the den. By bringing their own biases into the work, the reader has supplanted the morality and themes of the novel to overlay their own preconceived notions of good and bad to smother what the story, itself, has to say about these things. This is generally bad analysis because, since what constitutes moral behavior is a philosophical question of constantly shifting criteria in real life, fiction books serve this irl dialogue by offering up different parameters for what the author thinks should be considered moral. Thus, when the reader ignores what the story has put forth about morality, they take on the egotistical role of the Average Personโข๏ธ or a god where they assume that their personal opinions on morality are representative of every single person's opinions on morality, universally, or that their opinions should be the standard by which morality is judged. Essentially: "we don't need to discuss what counts as moral, because I've already figured it out for everyone!"
The whole "Jiang cheng had to protect him sect and the Jiang sect was so weak after the sunshot campaign and that's why Jiang cheng let WWX go and couldn't have helped the wen remnants because it was the correct political move and if he could have helped without endangering his sect he would have" argument never holds up for me for multiple reasons but the one that's particularly laughable is that if JC really ๐ธ๐ข๐ด working with his sect's best interest at heart, then the correct political move?
Would have been to
WWX was a literal one man army. His reputation was drawing new disciples to yunmeng Jiang(who would later go to beg him to take them on as disciples at the settlement). It didn't ๐ฎ๐ข๐ต๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ that yunmeng Jiang didn't have as many disciples as they used to, because WWX was more than enough to make up for their losses.
The real reason the jin was trying their damnest to drive a wedge between JC and WWX is because with WWX as part of the Jiang, they were basically untouchable. And for Jin guangshan who Wanted to become the new wen Rouhan, well that was unacceptable.
So they played on JC's insecurities and resentment issues, and JC-like the moron he is- fell for it,hook line and sinker. In fact he did half the work for them,by lying that WWX declared himself an enemy to the cultivation world and not telling anyone that the wen remnants were no army.
JC not helping WWX and very publically cutting ties wasn't "the best thing for the scet" because it ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฏ'๐ต make anything better, like at all. It only weakened them, which is what JGS wanted to begin with.
How exactly did WWX leaving the Jiang benefit them at all apart from JGS and minor sect leaders playing JC like a fiddle by stroking his ego and saying "that he did the right thing" because WWX was "disrespecting him" (which never happened)"oh the others were giving him shit because WWX doesn't carry his sword" Fun fact: WWX actually left his sword behind alot before he gave up his golden core. But JFG didn't care so no one else cared.. people take their cue from leaders. If JC had shut that down and yk ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ง๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฅ his "brother" they would have let it go.
Had JC stuck by WWX and taken in the wen remnants, citing the ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ debt he owed WN and WQ,which would have cost him ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ. And spewed some bullshit assuring everyone he had"WWX in line" that would have been it. "But the Jin were-" the Jin wouldn't have been able to do ๐ด๐ฉ๐ช๐ต. Especially with clear proof that the wen remnants were innocent.
This argument doesn't work for me because from a purely political stand point, making sure that WWX had absolutely no reason to leave the Jiang was his best bet. WWX is the single most valuable asset the sect has.
It's not like it would have been hard. WWX loved him(against his better judgement),and loved lotus pier. Had JC not made the very empathetic demand that WWX throw the wen remnants (including a grandma and a toddler btw) back into the death camps. Had he not tried to kill WN despite what WN had done for him. Had JC not personally burned every bridge that could have been used for WWX to both protect the wen remnants and stay in YJ,and as long as he didn't do anything heinous, then I doubt he would have left(considering he'd been conditioned to try and see the best in him. And WWX makes excuses for JC's horrid mistreatment of him,but the second JC turns that on someone else, WWX is swiftly putting an end to that)
WWX'S inventions that are still being mass produced in canon ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ณ๐ต๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐บ๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐ด after WWXs death- because the cultivation world is hypocritical as fuck- would be sold entirely through YJ making them even richer than they are probably. And When WWX and LWJ inevitably get together,it gives JC one hell of an alliance with the lan sect(god knows he wouldn't have been able to manage it on his own)
In conclusion, JC not helping WWX wasn't him doing what was best for his sect,it was soothing his own jealousy and superiority complex, because WWX was the best thing that ever happened to YJ. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Lady Mo au?
a continuation ofย 52ย 53ย 54ย 55ย 56ย 57ย 58ย 59 60
Oh, A-Cheng.
Jiang Yanli's eyes burn but she doesn't let the tears fall through years of long practice.
When she'd woken and they'd told her that A-Cheng had killed A-Xian, she'd laughed.
It doesn't feel like a joke anymore, except for one where maybe she's the punchline.
She knows that he didn't mean to do it. She's not even sure that he did do it - the idea that shoving A-Xian off a cliff would do more than lead to some bruises is laughable. Maybe if he'd been exhausted, as he probably was, he could have broken something. There's no way, even at the height of A-Cheng's rage and grief when he thought her dead, that he'd meant for his blow to kill. That he would have thought that it could have.
Jiang Yanli reaches for her brother's wrist, feeling the strong thrum of his golden core under her fingers.
When Wen Qing told her what she'd done, Jiang Yanli almost regretted saving her, nearly ended her life herself.
It was only the knowledge that Wen Qing would have let her that stayed her hand.
When A-Xian went over the cliff, he didn't have a golden core. He hadn't had a golden core for years. Because he'd tricked A-Cheng into taking his.
For the first time, Jiang Yanli had hated him.
Still, Wen Qing had admitted that even without his golden core, she doubted the fall could have killed him. He'd endured worse without it and survived.
However. He hadn't lost quite so much then. He hadn't thought her dead then. It's possible it killed him because Wei Wuxian let it kill him. She'll never know if that's true. She hopes it isn't.
They never found a body. A-Cheng clings to that still, but there'd been plenty dead during the war that never left bodies behind. Besides, if he was alive, he would have come back. He would have heard that she was alive and came back to her even if he was convinced that A-Cheng never wanted to see him again.
He never came back. The only answer is that he's dead.
"Okay, A-Cheng," she says softly, patting the top of his head like when they were children. She wonders who he saw that reminded him of A-Xian, if someone laughed a little too loudly, if they were a little too rude or a little too bright.
"He did," he mumbles, turning into her hand. "But not even to us. Asshole."
"I know," she says. He'd most of the way asleep already. He probably won't notice if she starts crying too.
It kills her, but she'll never tell him to stop, never tell him why all his hope is wasted, why he'll never find A-Xian no matter where he looks.
She's never told A-Cheng the truth about his golden core and she never will. It would break him, to know that all that's left of their brother now sits in his chest.
What if Buffy's mom hadn't found out about slaying at the end of season 2 and Buffy had to convince Spike to stay in town and pretend to be in a band with her because that was the cover story they'd told Joyce
And then eventually end up accidentally actually starting a band because itโs easier than maintaining the lie
Joyce says they can use the garage to rehearse and she always makes them snacks. Buffy starts to worry she'll never get Spike to leave
Buffy insists on calling the band Slayer and Spike keeps failing to convince her that thereโs already a band with that name
Low key I feel like Buffy would just see it as a cover and itโs a โfake bandโ but Spike gets like way into it and itโs a Real Bandโข๏ธ to him and heโs a little annoyed Buffy doesnโt take it as seriously. Heโs always like โyou missed practice this Tuesday what the hellโs up with that. We have a gig next week btwโ
#he starts trailing after her on patrol to bitch about missing practice or how she's sloppy on her chords #starts pitching in on the slayage because vampires keep interrupting his tirades #''EXCUSE ME we are having a ROW'' *stakes fledgling* #no chip necessary spike is literally the guy in the band with zero chill about the band #he undeads the band. he unbreathes the band. he spends all his time not sleeping... on the band. #(willow is their manager xander is the merch guy) #(giles was secretly plotting to lure spike into a trap until he notices spike is... actually better at corralling buffy on patrol than he is #because spike doesn't want her injuring her hands or doing anything that fucks with her breath control) #(giles is also weak to the nostalgia of it all and tunes their instruments when he thinks they're not looking) #(when faith arrives mid-S3 she's quickly recruited to sing backup) (via @entirelytookeen)
@worldsokayestdragon :
#spike after learning Oz plays guitar: why ฤฐsn't he in the band? #buffy: he's already in his own band. which is actually a real band unlike our fake band that you keep forgetting is just a cover story #spike: we're never going to make it in the music industry if you don't stop calling our band fake
Spike (with reluctant but knowledgeable backup from Giles) finally convinces her that "Slayer" risks bringing copyright lawyers down upon their heads, a fate worse than vampires
Buffy turns around and re-names their band "Fake"
#Buffy at their next concert: hi this is my Fake band and you're at my Fake concert#Fake band fans go NUTS when the Fake lead singer pulls her signature move: peacing out mid-song to go beat up some guys out back#Meanwhile: extended guitar and drum solos#the fans eat. that. gimmick. up.#Buffy returning covered in blood an hour later: oh god you're still going. Okay Fake second song here we go#and the crowd goes WILD
