you know the median age of the fandom is going down when main topics of discussion brought up by anons go from ādo you think Levana could have ever been redeemed if she had had a single person in her corner growing up the way Winter had Jacin?ā to ādo you guys think the couples from the series have SEX after they get married?ā
I am curious about this headcanon of yours, though it lacks much support in canon. Realistically, if the royal family were to have been impacted by radiation from the war several generations back, the same effect would be visible in the Eastern Commonwealthās population as well. Citizens would also experience the same epigenetic damage to their own lineages, especially so if they have ancestors who contributed to or fought in the war. It would trigger a significant decline in the following populations, not only from fertility rates lowering, but from early deaths and increased health problems, similar to Hiroshima. However, we donāt see this descriptively being spoken about in the books. Instead, it implies the opposite, that the region is overpopulated where the housing is dense. Despite the lack of details of Kaiās lineage, it makes sense to assume that the reason for him or his father and grandfathers being only children was a matter of choice, either to control the population or to prevent conflict between multiple royal heirs and throne rights, as we see with Channary and Levana. On a darker note, because weāre only ever told the lineage is succeeded through Kaiās multiple grandfathers, the reason thereās only ever been male born heirs may have been through selection. Purposely conceiving a male heir and/or terminating pregnancies with a female heir. Although dark, this idea would make sense with the general consensus in the fandom that Kai and Cinder would have two daughters out of their three children. Out of curiosity, besides it being an option to make sense of his strict lineage, what is it about this angsty headcanon that entices you? Iāve noticed that there has recently been a surge in ābullying Kaiā AU fictions. I find it quite humorous.
āšŖæš
Okay, firstly I want to clarify that I did not create this idea. As Iāve stated in my authorās note and a previous ask, I was inspired by Impossiblesuitcaseās post on the possibility of Kai having infertility.
I only suggested nuclear warfare as one possible explanationāitās not the only cause, nor is it something Iām claiming as canon. And even if it were, your argument still has a few gaps. Youāre generalizing the entire Eastern Commonwealth, which spans multiple countries. Marissa Meyer never goes into detail about the World Wars in this universe, so we donāt know where bombs may have been dropped or who was most affected. Itās entirely possible that Kaiās ancestors were in a specific region that experienced higher exposure.
Radiation exposure also isnāt uniform. Even within the same city, effects vary depending on proximity, age, and individual biological factors. Long-term or inherited effects wouldnāt necessarily show up across an entire population, especially generations later. They can appear in specific family lines without being widespread.
You also mentioned Hiroshima, but modern demographic trends in Japan, like low birth rates, are largely attributed to socio-economic factors rather than direct long-term radiation effects. So that comparison doesnāt fully support the idea that an entire population would still be visibly impacted generations later.
As for lineage, I agree that a preference for a male heir could play a role. But that doesnāt explain why the royal family wouldnāt have more children after a first-born son. Spares help secure the family bloodline. I doubt they wouldnāt have more children if they could. And as far as canon goes, weāre given very limited information about Kaiās lineage beyond his grandfather. We donāt know what came before, which leaves a lot open to interpretation.
This isnāt to dismiss your theory. There are multiple ways to explain Kaiās family structure. But none of them are confirmed, which is exactly why headcanons exist. Mine is just one possible explanation. Itās also entirely plausible that any fertility struggles are coincidental and not tied to lineage at all.
Thereās nothing that āenticesā me about this headcanon other than it acting as an explanation for Kaiās strict lineage. Miscarriage and infertility are completely normal things that happen to many couples. Cinder and Kai, like many of us, are not immune to hardship. I like this interpretation because it is realistic. At the end of the day, this is just my understanding of the text. Youāre free to disagree, just like Iām free to imagine their future differently. No one is required to share the same headcanons. Hope this clears things up!
The reason why I and others (I wasn't the first to suggest this hc) propose infertility as a potential explanation for why Kai is the last heir is that it's plausible, not because we believe it's a fact. And it's not because we 'enjoy making Kai suffer.' They are human characters! They would experience hardships just like us! Why is it so taboo to suggest that they potentially might have fertility issues?
Population control doesn't happen in royalty--the whole point is to secure the royal line, so the more children born, the better. After a war populations are typically smaller, so the imperative is toĀ increaseĀ the population. I feel it would be unlikely that 500+ years in the future--in a society where men and women are apparently treated as equals--would female heirs be terminated in favour of male heirs. That's rather horrific and would surely be noted in the text if that were the case, as the public would not overlook such a thing. The EC is generally spoken of favourably; if it were rooted in deep misogyny, it would be openly disliked.
Also something to consider is that Kai's ancestor was obviously a prominent leader during the war as he was later made the emperor. It's very possible that he was subject to a targeted attack, so perhaps his descendants are subject to the lingering effects that most of the population isn't. Also, it's canon that New Beijing was rebuilt from the rubble of the original Beijing, which was razed during the war. We know bombing of some sort occurred.
If anyone ever meets Marissa in person, can they please ask her why Kai is the last heir so we can put this debate to rest? š

HBO'S HARRY POTTER and the Philosopher's Stone (2026-)
Remember, Cinder being "politically inept " is temporary. This girl is a revolutionary, queen, ambassador and later, empress. She's going to gain ample experience as a leader, and as per mine and others' headcanon, she would probably study politics further at uni. The older and more confident she gets, the more terrifying she is. She would be a fierce politician. She's not letting anything slip. If you're corrupt, she's calling you out on it. She survived death countless times; she has no time for nonsense. She's got a lie detector and can instantly bring up anything anyone has ever said on the record, with dates and times.
I can imagine the rest of the Earthen Union having a healthy amount of fear of the Eastern Commonwealth, because its two leaders are the most insane power couple you've ever seen. You will not mess with the emperor and empress and come out unscathed. I mean, can you imagine the two of them striding into a meeting, confident and unbothered in their fabulous business suits? He pulls out the chair for her, and they're all polite to everyone, cracking their usual sarcastic jokes. Then, the second the meeting starts, they've got looks that could kill.
While they are the young newbies to the other leaders at the start, that won't last forever. Most of the positions in the Union are elected and therefore would get switched out every few years, whereas the emperor and empress have permanent positions. So when the next round of elections happens and a new batch of leaders comes in, suddenly Kai and Cinder aren't the newbies; they are the established leaders.
With the amount of influence Cinder has on Luna, the EC and the public in general, you want her on your good side. I just love the idea of how, in her first union meeting in Winter she's all intimidated and feels inadequate, then years later it's totally flipped on its head.

But he saw an innocent toddler with no parent, no one who loved her, and planned a party for her ššš Evret you were too good

I read the āNot a chanceā in a thick Australian accent, which doesnāt usually happen when I read your writing. I do however pick up on your lingo like singlet and other words I canāt recall
See, I think you guys are imagining me with a broad, ocker accent like Steve Irwin. When in reality I have a general Australian accent, e.g. Margot Robbie. It's not as strong as you'd imagine. I can definitely 'put on' an ocker accent, but it's not my general way of speaking. It sneaks in sometimes. As for my lingo, I'm often aware of the American version of a word, but why would I use it? It wouldn't be a fic in my words. Nothing wrong with the aussie version.
I heard that singlets are called wifebeaters in America???? is that true???
Carswell Thorne was never truly loved by his parents. On the surface, they were a picturesque family: a wealthy military man and a beautiful socialite woman, a lavish LA home and their son to follow in his father's footsteps. Carswell's value in the family is contingent on whether or not he adheres to this carefully constructed family image. Kingsley requires that his son join the military against Carswell's personal wishes, reprimands him for his lacking grades, and even forces his son to call him "Sir."
Carswell's mother is not much better. Rather than be overly strict, she is too concerned with her elitist lifestyle to be an involved mother. She chastises her son for wanting simple things instead of flashy designer items, and when he vents his frustrations about his father to her, she acts like he never spoke to begin with.
The couple won't let him have a real cat, because that's too much work, too likely to taint their impeccable home with its shedding and clawing. His mother doesn't want him to wear a Rampion pin because it isn't a luxurious ship and they have an image to uphold. Carswell's kindest exchanges at home are with their maid Janette. She treats him like the boy he is, not the man his parents expect him to be at only thirteen, even calling him 'Captain' because she knows any thirteen-year-old boy enjoys feeling a bit superior.
Nothing he does is ever good enough, so Carswell starts seeking attention elsewhere. If he's always in trouble, he might as well risk discipline for things that could potentially benefit him. Stealing, lying, even freeing a big cat from a zoo cage. If he is never praised for doing good, why bother feeling guilty about doing bad? This becomes his dream: to travel the world as a Captain--away from his parents--without anyone to tell him what to do.
People become expendable and relationships transactional to a young Carswell, a means to an end to reach his profit goals. Girls are pretty and he likes the attention from them, but he's never interested in pursuing a serious relationship with those who bat their lashes and twirl their hair at him. He doesn't know love, so he has no craving for it. But he does know what it means to be unloved. Charisma becomes his currency; if he controls the situation through his wit and charm, he cannot be unloved as he always holds the advantage. When people flatter and adore him, he fills the void of emotional connection with the superficial. He dates casually, tells every girl he sees that he loves them. He never means it and never sees anything wrong with it.

Chell (apparently the name of the protagonist in the Portal games) looks so much like Linh Cinder.
I know these are very random things to be connecting but I needed to mention it somewhere
