Cress Chapters 39/40 is quite possibly my favourite part of the whole series for a variety of reasons, but at this moment I need to talk about Thorne and the escort droid.
Now, not even getting into the whole minutiae of his going about acquiring this escort, which is a whole other deal, Carswell Thorne, in the middle of crisis mode, finds out that he is in possession of an escort droid. There's maybe, what? six hours between this moment and the next time we see them, wherein he is actively panicked searching for Cress however, he still takes the time to do two things that we know of.
A) Carswell Thorne, self-admitted to being some kind of way with women, hears that this hot sexy companion robot goes by "Darling." Apparently thinks "Yeah, no. We're gonna change that." And gives her a normal human name (Darla.)
B) Spends apparently a notable enough amount of the short time he's with Darla yapping about how cool Cinder is that Darla immediately informs her that Thorne has "Spoken SO highly of you."
INCREDIBLE use of crisis time. I love this man so much.
How is TLC So Good?
I recently re-read The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, a series I've always loved but haven't read in many years, not since I was much younger. For a series that ends with almost every main character in a happy relationship with each other, it is amazingly good at developing those relationships in a way that makes them meaningful. Additionally, I was super impressed by how much foreshadowing there was! Knowing some of the plot twists going in, they were set up from book 1, which was honestly just a testament to how well this series has aged over time. It has some areas that could flag as telltale YA good when you read it as a kid but not as enjoyable later in life except it combatted every possible place for failure. There was just the right amount of frustration caused by the characters being young a naive but also enough growth, communication, and worldbuilding to make the resolutions feel not only satisfying, but realistic. All this to say, it was an amazing series and I'm so glad I picked it up again. Can't wait to see how the adaptations turn out!
