Hello fanfiction community,
Just wanted to bring to your attention that the term whump was actually coined by the Stargate fandom specifically to describe making this guy suffer. He is the original Mr. Whump (no that's not his actual name). That's how torturable this guy is.
Everyone say mean things about him.
Here is a non exhaustive list of what he goes through in canon btw:
His parents get crushed to death right in front of him when he is a kid
He is forced to relive the memory of his parents death countless times
He dies and gets resurrected
His wife gets possessed
He fails to save her and she dies in his arms
He dies and gets resurrected again
He gets infected by a virus that makes him act crazy and gets put in an insane asylum
He dies and gets resurrected again
His ex gets possessed
He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation
He dies and ascends to a higher plane, then gets kicked out of the higher plane and his memory is wiped
He gets kidnapped by a princess
He gets kidnapped by a fish alien
He gets kidnapped and tortured by some terrorists
He gets kidnapped and tortured by another alien
He is driven to insanity by an alien device
He dies and gets resurrected again
He dies and gets resurrected again
The one true character of all time, the suffering he must endure for us to be well fed. And I can't tell you how much this list cuts out, the SA, the other numerous deaths, the tortures, the addiction... He truly has done it all.
writing fics be like

Polycule but it’s just two people in a romantic relationship with each other and their third who’s pretty obviously aroace but also somehow so deeply intertwined in their lives that it’d just be wrong to not count them as involved. Is this anything.

Oh, no. Ygraine swivels on the creaking stool. "Um— Nim?" For a few breaths, she sits perfectly still, save for the guilty wringing of her hands. No response from Nimueh. It's not uncommon for her friend not to hear the first time around. Not that she does it on purpose, of course — it's just that when she tends to that foul-smelling slop of hers, her entire world narrows to it: the horizon described by her pot and her herbs and all her funny-looking decanters. But this is good, Ygraine decides. This gives her enough time to determine if the issue at hand is serious enough to demand Nimueh's undivided attention, or if she could get away with pretending nothing's happened, and that she hasn't stuck her nose where it doesn't belong. No, she scolds herself, don't be childish. This is serious. With a deep breath she smooths her palms over her gown. "Nimueh," she announces, "I think I messed up."

You once asked how I, an unwashed peasant, came to write and read as well as a prince. I don’t remember what answer I gave, but I trust you know by now that snotty little brats are doomed to miserable lives full of unsolved mysteries. In respect to lessons hard learned, I’ll write the truth to you now.
The truth is that my mother taught me, and not because she had any great premonition of a future for me where such skills would be necessary. She learned herself in bits and pieces looking over her brothers’ shoulders and sneaking their books away for practice, and despite the hardships of my childhood, she persisted in the notion that, had I a bit more education and a sliver of the opportunity, I could sail it on to any sort of life I desired.
Strange, isn’t it, the hopes parents have for their children and the blood, sweat, and tears that go into building them. You face expectations far loftier than the dreamlike possibility architected for me, as befitting the difference in our stations. I know this. I know how heavily they’ve weighed on you and the strength it’s cost you to put them aside. Thank you for what you did that night. Whatever is to come, I will never forget that, in our darkest moment, you threw off every childhood lesson and acted on your heart alone.
Secretly I always knew you would. Oh how I love to be proven right.
In my lessons as a boy, my mother would read from a book of Greek tales. One of the fables in her book was of a dead king named Sisyphus, who was arrogant enough to trick death, and who was punished in eternity with the task to roll a boulder up a mountain. Only, every time the king approached the summit, the boulder would inevitably roll back down, forcing him to start again.
Sisyphus was doomed. He made his choices long ago, and in the end he toiled not to atone for his mortal sins, but in vain to beat the gods at their own games. ...It’s here my metaphor falls apart. I was moments from suggesting he might have prospered if he was only brave enough to change, to walk away from the fate that bound him, but I’m remembering now that he would have been flayed by winged women wielding whips if he’d tried.
Lucky for us we’re not in Hell, huh? At least not yet.
Writing to you as a free man, I hope you’ll forgive me if I place yet another expectation upon your worthy shoulders.
Write me back. I can’t give you an address—not in writing, you understand—but if you fold your letter into a boat and place it in the stream, the water will know where to go.
The next time we meet, the world may see us as enemies. But even if it makes me as arrogant as a mythological king who earned himself an eternal punishment, I’m not afraid at all.
I’ll be waiting.
Yrs faithfully,
M.

iris by goo goo dolls really is insane though. I'd give up forever to touch you? you're the closest to heaven I'll ever be? all I can breathe is your life? and I don't want the world to see me cause I don't think they'd understand? when everything's meant to be broken I just want you to know who I am? does anyone hear me.
If someone asks for book recs for something similar to Sinners…do not recommend them Interview With The Vampire. Cuz what is wrong with you? Not only was Anne Rice racist but Louis is a slave owner and Lestat can care less about the slaves in the book. They literally feed off of them. Like y’all don’t think, and that’s a problem.
Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark
Beloved by Tony Morrison
Kindred and Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
Lovecraft Country (show)
All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology edited by Circe Moskowitz
Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror edited by Jordan Peele
These are the types of books you recommend people who want something similar to Sinners. They are asking for books that are about and by Black people with supernatural and horror elements. Heck even LegendBorn by Tracy Deon could be considered horror with the amount of stuff that goes down in that book. I need y’all to get a grip and get it fast.
Throwing in Victor LaValle too. Particularly The Ballad of Black Tom.
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'
The first rule of fandom is have fun. The second rule of fandom is find an enabler and become an enabler. Yes you should write that fic. What if it was even hornier? What if it was angstier? What if you wrote it just for me?
This little guy has lived in my head for soooo long, but I haven't drawn him since I was a kid haha.

My favorite part about Piranesi (the book) is that it's honestly told from the wrong perspective. The main character should be Raphael, the maverick cop who overcomes public doubt to solve a cold case and take down a cult. But Susanna Clarke was like hmmm actually what if we watched the missing guy talk to birds for 300 pages as the plot takes place offstage. and it was fire
