My daily portrait sketch practice was frustrating and pissed me off yesterday. I couldn’t make my hands do what my brain wanted them to do. Today I decided to take a step back and focus on one thing at a time. Today I practiced eyes and I’m happy with how it went.
My backyard looked delightfully mystical this morning. Felt like I was going on a quest.
Corey and I haven't watched football in over a decade. When Junior Seau died by suicide by shooting himself in the heart, after being devastated by CTE to the point that he didn't recognize his own children or remember their names, he said "the game needs to change" before he died. That was over a decade ago. It hasn't changed.
The game is brutal and while you can get injured playing any sport, and people have died by sudden chest impact in other sports, there is a particular brutality to football that, coupled with ongoing sweeping of the damage of CTE under the rug by the NFL, the racial implications of young black men bearing the brunt of the defensive injuries, and the utter soulless, callous cruelty of Roger Goodell and the NFL administration telling the players to WARM UP AND GET BACK TO PLAYING IN FIVE MINUTES while their teammate was getting CPR on the field... I'm (not) sorry but this is shit. Its just my opinion obviously but fuck football and fuck the NFL, I don't know how anyone can keep watching this cruelty.
Probably pissed off a lot of friends tonight who are fans of football by saying all of this, but whatever.

Sketch of the day, day 2.
I know lots of folks had a 2022 they are ready to leave behind, but I actually had a really good year, so I’m watching 2023 with wary eyes because nothing good lasts forever
My 2023 resolution is to draw a face a day. Today is day 1. I may do different styles of faces but the goal is one a day every day, and continuously improve my skills. A pencil portrait from a random reference I found online is first in the book.
My friend just texted me this from SF with the caption "F is out"

And I bet there are men who still couldn’t find it.

On the nights when she requires it, I walk Sunny around the block. It usually happens between 2 and 3 am. It’s dead quiet, and the only lights are the moon in its various phases, and the streetlights, some of which give off a cold purple glow due to a manufacturing defect. It’s during these silent strolls I start to imagine how startling it would be to see another figure, shrouded in a winter coat, standing under a violet streetlight, watching me watching them. Note I did not say “another person”; a person would make sense. Well, about as much sense as it makes for me to be walking my dog at 2 am. I’m picturing just a figure, a shadow, a form. Something just up ahead, around the bend, just visible in the corner of my eye. It stands still, watching me, and I stop and stare at it, and for a second I think I can make out eyes under the hood. But maybe it’s just the glint of the purple lights. Maybe it’s just the shadow of a tree. Maybe I shouldn’t be awake right now. So we keep walking, walking, walking, in the cold and dead quiet, until she’s finished her necessary business. My imagination returns to reality. It’s cold and I am very tired. We get back to our house, take one last look around, walk back inside, and try to sleep again.
thinking about my optometrist who was treating my eye infection and said “if it hurts, you can rinse your eye with boiled water. look at me - look at me. i want you to understand that i mean water that has been boiled and has since cooled down. not boiling water. do you understand?” like i’m so grateful for this man ensuring that I wouldn’t destroy my eyes by pouring boiling water in it, because it is an adequate assessment of my intelligence

“Look at me”
Comforts.
@trinilikesalt tagged me, thank you!
Comfort food: Tomato soup and a grilled cheese. Really crisp bright green pickles from an Amish market. Plain cheese NY-style pizza, folded. Gigantic bacon egg cheese and hash brown breakfast burrito with plenty of hot sauce, from a walk-up counter service mom & pop in Southern California... the kind of place with the Pepsi-branded menu board with click-in letters. Costco rotisserie chicken.Â
Comfort clothes: Wintertime: My black cashmere turtleneck sweater, leggings or black jeans, and fleece slippers. Summertime: Cotton wrap or pullover knee-length dresses with bike shorts underneath, Birkenstocks. Year-round: We don’t wear underwire bras in this house anymore.Â
Comfort songs:Â Bogatyri - We Lost the Sea. Your Hand in Mine - Explosions in the Sky. Pyramid Song - Radiohead. Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins. Shipbuilding (cover) - Suede (aka The London Suede; I love the original by Elvis Costello but the Suede version just sounds so much more emotional). Challenger (Parts 1 & 2) - We Lost the Sea. Yeah lots of We Lost the Sea in there, its just that good.
Comfort movie:Â This is gonna sound weird, but The Blair Witch Project. Its just a perfect movie, in my opinion, and I can rewatch it endlessly.Â
Comfort book: Toss-up between the Fragile Things short stories collection by Neil Gaiman, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett, and Under the Skin by Michel Faber. The movie was fine but did no justice to the thoughtful philosophical questions raised by the book. Plus you can read it in one sitting, so you can go back and re-read it again when you finish.
Comfort activity: Napping. Walking my dog. Hugging, petting, and snuggling my dog. Spooning with my husband. Drawing. Fishing. Being on or near the water. Stargazing.
Comfort game: Scrabble and simple card games like rummy.Â
Thanks for thinking of me @trinilikesalt, I can’t think of anyone to tag so if you read this and liked it, feel free to repost and tell them I sent ya.

@clawfootboy
I trust him
Okay but this is exactly what I love.
The above image is a historical artifact. Colima dog. It dates back to circa 100 BCE-300 CE. (x)
And, around two thousand years later it was originally shaped with care, painted with love, and adored… someone draws it. Draws it using a new technological device that allows modern people to shape things with care, paint with love, and even move them -on a screen, glowing.
And the said person decides to share it with the world. The whole world adores it.
I love the connection between past and today. We were humans back then, and we are still the same.
Cute dog :)
Oh my goodness, here you are! Welcome, welcome!
