Iâm a little late, but time is an illusion anyway. With may thanks to @mythals-whore and @grimrevolution for setting eyes on this for me, I am here to share my Day Two contribution for @datvcompanionweeksâ Davrin Week!
Monster/Halla
Well, the rageling was out of the marketplace. Davrin would consider that progress. The stalls were torn to shreds, and goods littered the ground in pieces, but the screaming had stopped. He was bleeding, but it seemed superficial, nothing worth worrying about. Heâd achieved his most immediate aims.
Of course, now that the rageling wasnât there, it was somewhere else in Vol Dorma. Which was its own, different, set of problems.
Hunting in a city was different, heâd learned over the last couple years, than hunting in the woods. Heâd spent his youth learning different prints, what creatures they came from, what the depth and shape of them could tell him about the conditions when they were made, about the creatureâs weight, distinguishing them from old to fresh to follow the trail as it went.
The cobblestone streets of Tevinter cities didnât allow for that. Scrapings on stone couldnât convey the same information as Davrin had been used to in the woods. Which made sense, even as it sometimes left him with an easy feeling of blindness.
The noise in cities â chatter between friends in the streets, a hawkerâs call, the rattle of wheels on the street â meant he couldnât follow the sound of rustling leaves, the squelching of movement through mud, or the tell-tale snap of a branch or twig. There was no fragile silence as the birds went quiet to avoid a predatorâs hungry gaze to create a path to trace.
He could, though, often follow the screams of bystanders instead.
Paths of destruction looked different in a collection of Tevinter insulae and alleyways. Chunks might be taken out of bricks or stonework, scratches on a buildingâs side could show him his quarryâs direction, heft and speed. The signs were different, but they were there. And if he hadnât learned them all, he was definitely close.
Then there was approaching the quarry. The woods had the benefit of providing ample places to conceal himself, even in armor. Some monsters had better senses than people did, or animals, but their minds were rarely as sharp. It was easy enough, for someone with as much skill as he did, to camouflage into the foliage or shadows, at least for long enough to maintain some element of surprise.
He wasnât going to admit it to anyone any time soon, but losing those advantages had tripped him up more than once when heâd first started taking jobs in places like Vol Dorma. Cities didnât have those same advantages, heâd learned quickly, but what they offered instead was the anonymity of the crowd.
The crowd could be a hindrance â blocking pathways, slowing down movement, buzzing with panic â but it was harder for his quarry to see him coming if he was one among many.
That advantage dissipated, though, as soon as he went in for the kill. A battle with a monster might turn deadly for him in the woods.
It might become fatal for a dozen innocent people in a crowded square.
âYou! Elf!â And, of course, there were some obstacles very specific to monster hunting in the Imperium. Such as Venatori. And, like now, Templars.
There were three of them, in armor that gleamed so much in the magical signs that surrounded them, he had to wonder if theyâd ever actually tested it.
Probably not. Their eyes narrowed in fear when Davrin met their challenging gaze with his own.
Cowards.
A grating screech, like metal on metal, rent the air. Tell-tale screaming was its immediate accompaniment.
âDonât move,â one of the Templars ordered him, and Davrin nodded in feigned agreement until all three had followed what they thought was the direction of the sound.
They were, unsurprisingly, wrong. Davrin sprinted in the direction opposite theirs. The hunt continued.
âââââââ
âThe wrong way?!â She laughed. Mirth danced in her eyes alongside the reflection of the candle on the scarred bar.
If his grin was a little cocky, he figured heâd earned it. Pride was a better balm for his injuries than any potion or salve. âSound echoes if youâre surrounded by tall buildings,â he explained. âTakes at least a little skill to track sound when itâs bouncing that way.â
âAnd youâre a man with skill.â
He couldnât tell if she was teasing him or meant the compliment genuinely, but her smile was genuine and Davrin wouldnât complain about a pretty woman offering him her attention in either event.
âSo, did you win the day? Iâm assuming, based on the lack of screams outside, that you managed.â
âNothing I couldnât handle,â he assured her smoothly. Davrin took a sip of his ale and smiled. It was, technically, true. Heâd handled it.
And if some of the hair on his wrist had been singed off and heâd been forced to bandage one of his forearms, well, they didnât need to talk about it.
Heâd let her find out on her own.
Davrin hadnât expected to find company when heâd entered the rundown bar near the inn he was staying the night in. It was hit or miss in Tevinter, but more miss in larger cities like Vol Dorma. Mages didnât want anything to do with him, non-magic humans were more likely to accept an offer to leave together than one to share a drink, and Elves tended to avoid bars that werenât primarily occupied by their own.
So the detective â he wasnât sure if heâd forgotten her name or just never known it â joining him at his table had been a nice change from what heâd expected.
Davin watched with interest as she nodded at the bartender, and couldnât help but envy the quality of service she received as her drink arrived what felt like a moment after. She waved a hand over the top of the glass, and a smooth ball of ice dropped out of nowhere into amber liquid.
âSo is that your talent? Ice?â Heâd seen her waving a small staff around in the marketplace earlier in the day, ice following her gestures.
He could feel her curling smirk down to his toes.
âOne of many.â
âOh yeah? What else you got?â He challenged.
Her wink ran down his spine like lightning. âCanât give up all my secrets. Yet.â
Davrin took another sip of his ale before leaning in. Another hunt was on.
It was a beautiful day. Sunlight glittered off the surface of a massive lake that stretched deeper into the valley as massive, fluffy clouds drifted high in the sky. The chill of Arlathan had been replaced by something that could almost be considered warm, though the trees along the ancient walkway still cast cold shadows.
Radhika avoided the dark boughs and needles. No birds sang from the branches. Perhaps they sensed the strangeness in the air or even more likely, they had fled before Elgarânanâs Archdemon showed up and thought them snacks.
On her left, Davrin adjusted his armor under the old Venatori disguises Strife had dug up for them.
âStop fiddling with it,â Neve hissed, standing to Radhikaâs right dressed in her much nicer, less bloodstained robes.

A collaboration with tklivory on nexus <3 (with me being more of a technical advisor, a tester, and icon maker)
Have YOU ever felt like the CC hair options are missing that Special Something that an NPC's hair has? Wanted to see if any of other characters' styles could be good for your Rook, but didn't want to bother with making a swap library? Well, now it is no longer a concern!
This mod adds all hairstyles (a total of 17) exclusive to NPCs as standalone usable options for Rook without any need to bother with the description file. Just install and enjoy đ
Minrathous was on fire. Heat seared the edge of Radhikaâs gloves and scorched the ends of her hair. Smoke blacked out the sky, billowing into the pouring rain in lazy spirals. Stone cracked. Metal groaned. Burned flesh, the smell of fruit crushed underfoot, and the sharp tang of iron filled the streets, unhindered by the downpour.
Radhika slipped twice on the stones; once in a puddle of water then again in a puddle of blood. Davrin had caught her both times. His silverite shield gleamed gold against the burning buildings, and his grip had left sore spots along the underside of her arm.
going to sleep in my Davrin shirt, with my Davrin is no. 1 foam finger tonight so i can wake up and drink out of my Davrin mug and browse all of the Day 1 entries tomorrowđĽ°
Don't forget to tag your posts with #datvdavrin2026 and/or mention us @datvcompanionweeks when you post your work(:
Before you panic; no, weâre not cancelling Davrin week. Instead we wanted to come to you, the community, about how to run this blog for the foreseeable future (until, hopefully, Tumblr rolls back their new feature).
If you have not read the new update, you can read it here. A breakdown of what it actually does can be read here.
What this means is that if we comment as we normally do on creatorâs work, the responses will then go to us. We donât want that. This blog and these events were made to foster a community. Removing our comments and leaving nothing but a blank slate entirely removes that purpose.
Additionally, this upcoming week is for Veilguardâs only black companion: Davrin. We have no desire to lessen our engagement with fans because of tumblr staffâs utter disregard for community and creative spaces. We have no desire to alienate black fans and fans of Davrin in general due to this situation.
Weâve come up with a few solutions after an hour of testing on our personal blogs, but this is a community. We want to hear from the community. Not just the people who create but also the ones who interact and engage with those creators.
So far we know that if we reblog with our comments the creators will not see anything added to our posts except the notification of additional reblogs that also have comments and tags. Liking a post thatâs not on the creatorâs original page will just automatically apply that like to the most recent reblog with a comment. Additionally, all replies on otherâs reblogs will not be seen by the creator, whether in notifications or on the post itself.
Weâve come up with two different choices on our end:
We reblog with our comments as usual with the addition of telling people to reblog/comment on the original post.
We simply reply and do an otherwise silent reblog with tags so if someone doesnât read our reminder the creator is not derived of interaction.
We push out the week (not ideal, but if it's what the community wants we will try to make it work.)
This event is about all of you, though. We just have the delight of seeing what you make during the week. So, if you have any ideas, weâre opening the floor to you. What do you want from us?
