I see people are worried about the AI aspect here, so just my two cents as someone who works professionally in tech.

This isn’t GenAI in the sense that people are usually referring to when they talk about the environmental and creative concerns around LLMs like Gemini or Perplexity.

Starburst doesn’t scrape the open web nor do they train models on other people’s work. Even the environmental footprint isn’t comparable either as they don’t require massive GPU clusters to operate. They are an enterprise data infrastructure and can also provide support for a company’s AI agents/ AI applications in natural language, hence we see the AI branding here.

So what’s happening here? Starburst is essentially just a very powerful SQL query engine and businesses use their software to query their own internal data, which can be across different databases and pull it together for analysis and insights.

GenAI is the problem people are rightfully concerned about with web scraping, copyright issues, replacing creatives across the fields and their energy-consuming data centres. But AI itself isn’t inherently the problem, it’s used across several fields, from medicine to business, often in ways that has nothing to do with GenAI.

people are misreading it as an AI company and while they (unsurprisingly) reference AI a lot in their marketing spiels in non data brained terms i promise they’re basically a really fancy really really really big spreadsheet with bespoke configurations for companies to pull what they need how they need (including for AI shit, the big thing for marketing to enterprises these days). which is why i am really bemused by lando partnering with them as an individual as opposed to it being a mclaren partnership lmao

As someone that has a client who partners with Starburst very often on business development things I am sensing an opportunity to help them rewrite their website copy because they are 1) not a generative AI company and 2) really bad at communicating what they actually do, apparently
