📖 The Vitality Virus — Strains & Infected Codex
The Vitality Virus was engineered from the Origin Virus, a primordial pathogen discovered in the Hollow Earth.
Old World Research: The Super States and Megastar Company refined it into a weapon for disabling enemies, B.O.W. development, and forced evolution.
Unleashed: Instead of destruction, it was weaponized—leading to the Collapse.
Primary: Blood, saliva, bile, tissue.
Secondary: Airborne (rare), contact-based, spores, worms.
Carriers: Spread infection while appearing healthy.
Immunes: Rare individuals resist infection entirely.
Backbone of the infection.
Rapid mutation → crude zombies or unstable variants.
Highly contagious, spreads like wildfire.
Infection develops in stages (cocoons/husks).
Produces wildly divergent forms (spindly, insectile, hulking).
Dangerous for unpredictability.
Produces Sentients and Elites (retain memory, speech, emotion).
Controlled mutations → leaders among the Infected.
Oozes Strain make Oozelings the precursors to the Vermin
Shape-shifting: Capable of altering form, mimicking biology, or manifesting grotesque mutations.
Assimilation: Absorb DNA and even knowledge from consumed or infected hosts.
Rapid Reproduction: Capable of creating spawn through biomass budding, infection, or parasitic implantation.
Hive Instinct: While individuals may act autonomously, most Vermin show signs of collective behavioral alignment, suggesting a hive-mind intelligence or psychic network.
Status: The most widespread strain.
Nature: Extremely volatile in hosts, causing rapid cellular collapse or crude mutation.
Result: Most typical zombies originate from U-Strain infection.
Leads to standard zombification or twisted but basic mutations.
Highly contagious; spreads easily through bites, fluids, and decayed tissue.
Mutates differently in each host, producing a variety of grotesque but “low-level” infected.
Threat: U-Strain is the backbone of the infected population — it doesn’t create “special” monsters, but it creates numbers, overwhelming by horde.
Status: Intermediate strain, rarer than U.
Nature: Infections develop in stages, cocooning the host in biomass before emerging.
Result: Produces creatures that look radically different from their original hosts.
Hosts often encase themselves in husks/cocoons during transformation.
Mutation is deliberate and staged, not random.
Can produce bizarre infected that fill niche roles — heavy, spindly, or insect-like.
Threat: Unpredictable — survivors might find a seemingly harmless cocoon only to have it hatch into something unrecognizable and deadly.
Status: Rare and advanced — appears in only a small fraction of infections.
Nature: Produces “higher” infected with lingering humanity.
Result: Creates Sentients and Elites — mutated beings with intelligence, emotion, or psychic resonance.
Hosts often retain memory, personality, or emotional traces.
Can mutate in controlled ways rather than chaotic growth.
Some G-Strain subjects achieve semi-sentience or even leadership roles among the infected.
Threat: Dangerous not just for physical power, but for their ability to think, plan, and manipulate survivors.
Devil Strain (D-Strain) 🪱
The Devil Strain is not a pure viral infection, but a worm-like parasitic strain that has fused with the Vitality Virus. Hosts infected by Worms are transformed into frenzied, hive-minded predators — essentially walking worm-hives that spread infestation through bites, burrowing, or shedding larvae.
Unlike most other strains, the D-Strain carries its own Node, allowing it to operate in highly coordinated swarms.
Flora Strain was first identified by the Megastar Company, hidden deep in the Bane Virus genome during their experiments in weaponized evolution.
It was cultivated in secret biolabs where researchers deliberately fused plant DNA, Maturo exposure, and the virus to create new forms of symbiosis between flesh and flora.
Central intelligence for a strain.
Command through pheromones, spores, or psychic resonance.
Can reshape terrain into living nests.
Not every strain develops them — but when one does, it becomes an apex-level threat.
The Nexus (Psychic Lattice of Infection)
A non-physical psychic domain that exists only in the minds of Nodes.
Functions like a networked dreamspace or "hive internet," where all Strain Nodes can communicate.
Time and space inside are fluid — conversations feel instantaneous, but the outside world may barely move.
Nodes: Every Strain has a main Node — the “brain” or “queen” of its infection — which anchors its hive to the Nexus.
Rare Outliers: Certain Sentients, Psychic mutants, or Maturo-enhanced humans, humans with the right sometimes “hear whispers” of the Nexus. These are usually unstable.
Symptomless but contagious.
Often unaware of infection.
Both feared and useful (resistant but doomed).
Pure resistance, even under heavy exposure.
Incredibly rare (especially vs. F-, O-, or G-Strain).
Factions prize them as miracles, weapons, or research assets.
U-Strain basics → standard zombies.
Primal instincts: hunt, feed, spread.
Weak individually, deadly in hordes.
Variants shaped by strain, environment, or circumstance:
Volatile – Explosive cysts, detonate on death.
Burned – Charred, fireproof.
Shrieker – Summons hordes with screams.
Mutated individuals with unique abilities:
Special Infected (Mutated Outcomes)
Prowler (Berserker Class): Rage-driven, explosive bites, reckless charges.
Stalker (Assassin): Clawed, silent sobbing lure, fragile but lethal.
Runner (Agility Predator): Twitchy speedster, burns out quickly.
Ambusher (Tongue Predator): Drags prey with elongated tongue.
Shambler (Gas Corpse): Bursts toxic clouds.
Bomber (Bile-Class): Sprays corrosive bile, blinds/burns.
Lurker: Patient grappler, thrives in confined spaces.
Wretch: Disease projector, creates filth zones with acid.
Shriekkin: Defensive strain-guard.
Hag: Matron-like feral, stalker-summoner.
Howler: Fear shriek, distorts hearing and morale.
Apex Infected (Nightmare Tier)
Rare, near-mythical evolutions — often U-Strain based:
Behemoth (Titan) – Towering fusion of flesh/fungus. Viral plating, horde-summons, building-crusher. Weak to fungal bloom cores.
Banshee – Sonic predator, shatters grenades mid-air, screams raw emotion. Weak while charging scream.
Goliath (Brute) – Knuckle-walking, plated giant. Hurls debris, crushes prey, enrages at blood scent.
Other Apexes – Survivors give them names like legends (e.g. “Grinder,” “Wraith”). Each is essentially unique.
Semi-human infected retaining speech, creativity, and identity.
Stylish, articulate, but unpredictable.
Dual-nature: reasoning human + feral monster.
Often cling to relationships as “anchors.”
Dangerous manipulators or tragic allies.
Evolved/Hybrid Strains (Maturo/Experimental Exposure)
Infection + Enhancement → Unstable fusions
Hybrid Mutants (bioengineered or accidental)
Overgrown Symbionts (plant/virus fusions)
Failed Experiments (grotesque dead-ends)
