What's the process if you're a superhero and you come out as trans
Do you tell your villains?
Do you keep it a secret so no one can connect Spider-Man with your secret identity for a while? Or do you pop a pronouns pin on your costume and the next time you web up Doctor Octopus and he goes "I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME SPIDER-MAN" you go "Spider-Girl actually! I've been figuring out some shit"
"Listen for Christ's sake we're a modern paper. Parker - Parker get in here - this is Madeline Parker, came out three months ago. Best photographer we've got. We're proud to have her on board. We at the Daily Bugle are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community bUT THIS SPIDER-GIRL IS A MENACE"
Overwhelming consensus on this post is that you should come out in your superhero identity first, and then a couple weeks down the line come out in your secret identity and when people ask just go “Oh seeing Spider-Girl come out really gave me the confidence to come out myself” which is the best possible answer
What is even the difference between an Elf and a High Elf?
STOP TALKING ABOUT WEED
as a child being told "the moon controls the tides" with no additional explanation was like. oh okay. you want me to believe in magic? you're talking about magic right now? okay. fine
sorry. only semi-related but i simply wasn't ready for "the sun is a distant gorilla". thank you NASA

same energy
why can't manatees bounce around on land like seals
a simple reason!
THERE IS NO BOUNCE IN THIS THING. it's just bones. open bones.
seal and sea lion skeleton for comparison:
LESS BONES!! MORE BOUNCE
okay so what I'm getting from the notes is that a lot of people had NO IDEA that manatees are more anatomically similar to whales and dolphins than seals! they also did that thing where they just yeeted the entire pelvis and grew a fin- their tail is, in fact, a tail c:
it's even more obvious with their dugong relatives, who just have a full-on fluke back there!
complete with a little smirk to go with it.
"weird" really is the perfect descriptor for modern conservatives because I would argue the defining feature of the current american far right is that they exist purely in their own bespoke media ecosystem that is both highly conspiratorial and mostly untethered from the truth. this is a group of people whose belief system has been debunked and disproven so many times by legitimate sources that they've resorted to just telling each other increasingly absurd lies in order to justify those beliefs. the upshot of this being that the minute you remove any of those lies from said bespoke media environment, there's really no appropriate response other than some varient of "bro, what the fuck are you talking about?"
how am I supposed to respond to someone who says that Democrats are running a satanic cult where they ritually sacrifice children to harvest their adrenachome - a theory that is not only insane, but is also a throwaway gag from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. what do you expect me to say to someone who says that trans women are dominating in women's sports, and when asked to give examples responds with a list of non-white cis women? How am I supposed to take someone seriously who thinks that wildfires are caused by space lasers controlled by the Rothschilds or that schools are installing litter boxes for children who identify as cats or that most large corporations are "Marxist" because they have mandatory diversity trainings?
like sure I can take them seriously as a political threat but how am I supposed to have any respect for them as *people*. because as people they are just deeply fucking weird. we should be able to dismiss them out of hand because it's not like they'd care about whether or not we're making a reasoned argument
basically doing this to them
for the love of god, do not use chores to punish your kids!!!! it's just going to make them struggle deeply to keep their houses tidy as adults since you made them associate necessary chores with punishment and suffering, and it's going to take years of therapy to undo. don't use chores as punishments!!!
oh man all these people having the horrifying realisation in the tags on why they struggle so bad with chores is breaking my heart
im giving everyone in the tags a hug if thats okay im so sorry

Right-wing propaganda news can't stop making Harris look good.
I swear like half the screenshots I see of Fox News are just
I wish this was my job.
I mean, “Emily” is a nice enough name for a girl.
There, I just earned $1000.
I've read about her! She mostly works with Chinese parents to pick appropriate sounding English names for their children to use later in life. See, Chinese names do not tend to work well outside of China because of how tonal and unique the phonetics can be and how few international documents allow the symbols. Rather than sign their kids up for either never working or traveling abroad or constantly being disrespected on accident, many parents give them backup English first names in addition to their Chinese first names.
However, the problem arises that Chinese parents do not always know English naming connotations any more than I would know Chinese ones, and there’s a LOT of very deep cultural traditions involved in naming your kids, so they can't just grab a popular baby names list and call it good. So some poor kids get names that were direct English translations of those Chinese naming sensibilities that didn't translate well (a friend of mine in College had to help a tutoring student with name change paperwork so she wouldn't have to go by Lush. My dad knew a guy who narrowly dodged the first name Rolex, but his name ended up Cash, thankfully. That sort of thing) or names that ARE English name's but have... unfortunate connotations (think Karen or Hannibal), or names that are just very outdated (Bertha, Ethyl, Quintin, Norbert, etc.). And without becoming world travellers or investing a shitton of time in learning way more about other cultures than they really need to for daily lifw, your average lower to middle class parents couldn't really guarantee that the names they gave their kids would actually help them, thereby risking continuing the cycle of social stratification and limiting upward mobility.
So this woman learns this, and goes "Oh, I know how to fix this!" And she starts a business where Chinese parents can email her with a list of things that they want their children's names to mean or reflect, auspicious elements they want, etc, and she pools her knowledge of English speaking cultural norms and a bunch of baby name guides to email them a short list of names that meet their needs with little descriptions of each one explaining what it means and how people will think of it, and they can pick a meaningful name in accordance with their cultural traditions that won't screw their kids over later.
Once again: if something seems dumb it probably wasn't meant for you. Similar vein to a lot of tools or gadgets being originally made for people with disabilities but then let loose into the wider consumer market
it sucks so bad that 'lightning magic' in every media is just some pathetic little strands of electricity. i wanna see some LIGHTNING. show me a magic setting where lightning magic lights up a room like the sun, and the bolt is only visible as an afterimage burned into your vision. I wanna see someone cast lightning and have the thunder rattling the room and shaking everyone to their core. i want lightning magic to be a split second blast of so much power it leaves everyone's senses reeling. c'mon guys don't you know what real lightning looks like? we can be doing so much better than this.
This but also I'm bored of it always coming out of the character's hands or staff. I actually think it's much cooler and more badass if the spell calls real lightning out of the sky. The first implies you're just using magic to channel energy through yourself, which media wants us to think is more badass, but the other really communicates that you are filing a request that nature is answering.
For decades stoners were renowned for their aesthetics. For their blacklight posters and lava lamps, for their airbrushed dragon murals and electrical shock orb thingies from Spencer Gifts. Then they legalized weed and every weed store became the flattest, emptiest minimalist void imaginable. They're putting a weed store in a former Rainforest Cafe and they're tearing out all of the rainforest decor to make it just a big empty space with walls painted the blandest green they can find. They tore down paradise and put up a place where a business major tries to tell you CDB oil can cure cancer

when internet people are like “i love gothic literature but i hate anything that discusses incest, sexual violence, oppression, misogyny, abuse, torture, gore, murder, or death”
no actually me and everyone else who’s ever watched crimson peak were brainwashed by guillermo del toro into believing that incest and violence are cool and awesome. sorry
Horrifying that this pearl-clutching over horror actually being dark is unironically becoming A Thing…

Write the problematic thing. Make people uncomfortable. Create art!
The tags are actually mine, and I need you all to know when I said "girl," I actually meant "young woman of 23 years old," and the brainrot was so deep she tried to get us all to sit down as a class and vote as to whether or not we thought the designated reading with its dark themes were appropriate reading for a classroom.
For a Gothic Horror Literature class at university level.
There was not a single person in that room under the age of 20. We were all adults, mere months away from graduating with our bachelor degrees, and this person felt comfortable trying to police us and the class contents like we were five.
Needless to say, we did not participate in a vote. Nor did the professor call her stupid to her face, no matter how much she might have wanted to. Instead, she invited anyone who felt uncomfortable to drop the class. Bafflingly, the student who complained didn't leave, but she made damn sure to let us know during every class discussion that she didn't agree with the morality of the texts.
And this wasn't recent. This was over 15 years ago, long before TikTok, so this was home-brewed idiocy likely strained through the puritanical discourse of some LiveJournal flamewar.
Basically, what I'm getting at is 'what's old is new again.'
The only difference is now everyone's got access to the Internet via the smartphone in their pocket, and they're making their ignorance everyone else's problem on a much larger scale.
