We had such a fantastic relationship and there were many years where you don’t know what love really is. Tessa and I have real love between us. I really believe that. We loved telling stories about people in love. It made sense to us. A man and a woman on the ice, we were drawn to each other. There was an energy that would zing through our bodies and I’m sure a lot of that was real in a way.

My marriage is easy because of the lessons I learned with Tess. I spent way too long on my wedding day talking about Tessa for anybody that didn’t understand our relationship.

She won gold on her own terms. She didn’t allow the sport to affect her mental health and love for the sport and art. She recognized she needed a break, left for a while and then came back with her own conditions where she didn’t have to sacrifice her own happiness and mental health. I’m happy she was rewarded for the choice of putting yourself first. So often we’ve seen athletes, especially female athletes having their whole life controlled by the sport and having to adapt to some crazy expectations and seeing Alysa’ care free attitude towards the sport is a breath of fresh air. It’s an example to other young athletes too. That you don’t need to suffer to be successful.
