Shout out to my dad who exclusively calls Lyonel Baratheon “Oscar Isaac Baratheon”.
LGBTQ+ In ASOIAF
In honor of Pride Month, here's a list of canonically queer characters in ASOIAF! There are far more characters than who I have listed, but I was only allowed 30 pictures per post, so I have tried to include central characters to the best of my ability. The progress pride flag has been used for characters with no confirmed sexuality.
Lady Jeyne Arryn, who served as head of house Arryn during the Dance of Dragons, and was seemingly pretty openly lesbian, and lived with and died naturally in her lover's arms.
Renly Baratheon - In both show and book canon, Renly is a gay man, and has a relationship with Loras Tyrell.
Daemon II Blackfyre - Canonically had a male lover, and had interest in Ser Duncan the Tall.
Jon Connington - A close friend of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen's. Many speculate he loved the prince, and he was confirmed by George R.R. Martin to be gay.
Elissa Farman - One of many, although the obvious favorite, lovers of Queen Rhaena Targaryen.
Oberyn Martell - In both books and show canon, Oberyn Martell is bisexual.
Loras Tyrell - In both books and show canon, Loras Tyrell is gay, and the lover of Renly Baratheon. It is speculated that Loras pursued Knighthood to remain unmarried without his sexuality being put to question, however his sexuality is widely known.
Queen Rhaena Targaryen - Queen Rhaena is a canonical lesbian, and had a harem of lovers, namely Elissa Farman, whom she was very openly close with.
Laenor Velaryon - In both books and show canon Laenor is a gay man and takes a few lovers.
Alyssane Blackwood - Alyssane was rumored to have a female lover, but later married Cregan Stark for love. Her sexuality is not confirmed.
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen - In book canon, Rhaenyra was rumored to have taken male and female lovers, namely Laena Velaryon and Harwin Strong. In show canon, Rhaenyra expresses romantic or sexual desire for the Lady Mysaria. However, her sexuality is not confirmed.
Varys - In show canon, Varys verbally expresses a lack of sexual or romantic attraction.
Laena Velaryon - In book canon, Laena was rumored to have been a lover of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Her sexuality is not confirmed.
Daenerys Targaryen - Daenerys has expressed romantic and sexual attraction towards men, and sexual attraction towards women. Her sexuality is not confirmed.
Below are links to the artists I used.
Daemon II Blackfyre Jon Connington Elissa Farman
Rhaena Targaryen Alyssane Blackwood Laena Velaryon
Daenerys Targaryen
Jon Snow has black hair, wears an all black fur coat, narrates through emo-poetry, and has a giant white wolf with red eyes, of course he’s bisexual.
Maekar Targaryen: My son behaves badly. I think sending him to Ibiza will fix him.

Monsters and symbolism
(TW talk about Queerness and the effects of religion in gothic literature)
Monsters have always been used to represent things that humans see as taboo, or wrong. It usually ties a lot into religion and what is seen as "wrong" in that time or place. Vampires have been used to symbolize queerness, written by queer authors, with queer subtext, or just GAY. While there's been a lot of different times and religions that have their equivalent of a vampire, the modern iteration that we see as "vampire" (Nosferatu, Dracula, Lestat) stem from Carmilla (in literature; yes Dracula and vampires also come from Vlad, but that's just one part of it)(also yes in lots of different cultures and myths there are different similar things to what we see as vampire today, but were focusing on Europe rn). Carmilla was written in 1872, by Sheridan Le Fanu... son of a "STERN PROTESTANT CHURCHMAN", raised in a very religious household, in Ireland. (I'm not a genius regarding any of this stuff, so sorry if some of this is wrong) In the early 1800s, gay acts between men were illegal, and those caught would be put to death... closer to the 1850s, it was 10 years in jail, but still major punishments. For women however, lesbian, or bisexualness was not seen as on the same level as men being gay. Take that, and what the Protestants believed of gay people, and...
I'm not saying the author of Carmilla was gay, BUT all of this together shows that it was a product of its time and religion. Sins, and illegal acts, put together to create the vampire Carmilla. THAT is where vampirism stemmed from, then Dracula, written only twenty years later, by a man who many historians believe to be lgbtq. Vampires became projections of what the authors either felt or believed, tying into two of "the worst sins", lust and homosexuality. But it wasn't just vampires. Frankenstein's monster and him being something other than the “norm” and turning it into a physical manifestation… monsters are supposed to represent like hidden desires or fears or feelings... queerness, otherness, just straight up being different, and what the product of not what it looks like, but what it feels like. People hiding who they are, in fear of being ostracized like they monsters the people made them feel like just for being different.
A LOT of it ties to religion as well, obviously, considering these monsters are very specific to Europe and European religions. Outside of Europe, think, for instance, about the Kumiho in Korean mythology. A beautiful woman, who seduces you, before eating your heart... sound familiar? its cause a lot of the religious "sins" and fears carry over. You might be thinking of the Sirens, also beautiful women, who lure you with their "beauty" and their singing, telling you of everything you COULD have if you give into temptation. Temptation and women and maybe even sexuality, and the idea that greed and lust are not good for men, and Women serve as temptation... BUT HEY, THATS A POST FOR ANOTHER TIME !!
Anyway I was just yapping, thanks for bouncing off my ideas and letting me bounce of your guys ideas @imawritingzombie and @inquisitoriux !!
PLS COMMENT OR REBLOG OR ASK ME QUESTIONS I WANNA HEAR OPINONS AND TALK ABOUT IT YAY !!
