i am like almost 100 pages away from finishing between two fires and while i do enjoy the religious horror imagery and the pressing atmosphere from beginning to finish is riveting, i still wait for any kind of development for delphine. it's a bit of a shame because i kind of feel like so far interesting inner conflict and introspective moments are afforded to thomas and matthieu yet we've not seen something similar afforded for delphine, but who knows, i might change my mind after i finish the book.
reading christopher buehlman's between two fires right now and i'm enjoying it. i was under the impression it was like gonna be a slow burn exploration of horror AND faith in dire times like The Plague. it every much is that and i thought βooh so the horror is the people we meet along the way who has committed the most vile things in order to survive but at what cost bla bla blaβ then BOOM here's a HUGE serpent that eats people in this village and let's not forget a bunch of demonic statues that are knocking at ppl's doors and killing them at night!!!

Between Two Fires spoilers but I had to get this out --
I think what I love most about Between Two Fires -- besides how much time is spent thinking about love, and how love is both salvation and reward -- is that while everything that happens is just a tiny step (hi Angela di Foligno) in God's plan, there is no sparrow that falls without finding itself within the palm of His hand.
And it's not just the flawed, terrified humans that are given that grace; the moment that haunts me most consists of maybe two or three lines in the climactic battle. Two angels grapple with a struggling demon, shouting in its ears, as they drag it into the river.
Three angels come out.
