ok that sleeve is super visible once you've seen ut but damn is it the opposite until you have
I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.
reblog if you remember having to ration your text messages and accidentally opening the internet on your phone was the end of the world
How old were you when you got your first smartphone?
Younger than 10

Thinking about that vegan woman who won't eat mushrooms even though she wants to, because they are not plants
I avoid mushrooms because I don't like them. She avoids mushrooms because she has COMMITMENT. We are not the same.
does she also not eat salt?

I have a question about your username: why a scarlet pescatarian specifically?
(i have wondered this since i first saw your username many moons ago but forgot until now that I could simply send an ask about it lol)
Addicted to red herrings.
oh my god they said it explicit
i like to imagine how people in the post-material-scarcity future would romanticise the current time period.
having a job gave people a sense of community and purpose lacking in our modern age where nobody is forcing you to get out of bed on threat of starvation. actually the average office worker in the early 21st century was so much wealthier than a UBI-having-modern if you forget to count paying rent and also make some very bad purchasing power conversions. if you look at contemporary records (sitcom where the main characters are only at work when it's plot relevant) it is obvious that employment was never really a major obstacle to having an active social life or pursuing your own passions.
Honestly I have a lot of...concerns about how a post scarcity society would work in relation to the things that I love. But I hope having to give up things like tv and pop culture and toys makes them happier
why would a post-scarcity society have to give up those things? what do you think post-scarcity means?
I mean, cartoons are probably going to end up "reduced" to Glitch Productions type things, like 10 minutes of animation every 6 months. There's just no way to produce 20 minutes of quality animation on a weekly or even a monthly basis in a world where no one has an incentive to work on an idea that isn't theirs.
Why would anyone choose to do inbetweens on someone else's cartoon, when they have no financial or occupational obstacles to just working on their OWN cartoon? Animation takes dozens or hundreds of people to do to current quality and a lot of it is a really shit job to get stuck with.
The same goes for things like toys and collectables. Who is going to CHOOSE to make someone else's dolls all day when anyone with the skill or the talent is 100% fo the kind of person who would just be making their OWN dolls in miniscule batches.
Remove employment from the equation and I just don't see any reason why ANYONE would do large entertainment projects at current scale. And even if they did, most of them would crumble under the fact that the entire workforce can and will just leave at any possible moment, right?
This isn't a dig, or a gotcha, it's just the thought I constantly have when this concept comes up
i think you're imagining 'nobody needs a job to survive' but 'post scarcity' is a stronger postulate than that, and implies something like e.g. if i have an idea for a doll or a tv show it can trivially be mass produced (generally under the assumption that we can automate almost all things that nowadays require human labour)
We're uhh...kind of already starting to try and do that automation step.
and the results are not great.
we've been doing the automation thing for centuries and I would describe the results as nothing short of amazing.
nitpickspot might want to look into how cloth was made before the loom was invented, or the concept of the manual choke in cars, or how flour had to be milled before machinery — I've done that latter one, for fun, its not very.

abortion clicker early game : you click the belly 50 times in order to perform one abortion. this lets you buy a doctor who performs 0.1 abortions a second.
abortion clicker mid game: you own hundreds of clinics as well as think-tanks which dismantle sex ed courses as well as politicians which strengthen pro choice institutions
abortion clicker late game: the solar system’s resources have been stripped to build a dyson sphere which incubates trillions of humans for the sole purpose of performing abortions on them. once we achieve hyperspace travel, other stars will power superintelligent machines which will simulate octillions of abortion a second
im not a furry but recently ive been thinking about what if there was a global outbreak of a virus that transforms you into your fursona? so i made one just in case. not because im a furry (im not) but just ouf of safety if i need one in a pinch. he's very cute and fluffy btw

As a principled feminist I'm often tempted to say shit like "are men capable of higher thought" but then I have to remember not to perpetuate gender essentialism and change it to "why do men choose not to think about anything"
the echoes of the world sound nice in the head unburdened by the sound deadening foam of thought
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.
Hey students, here’s a pro tip: do not write an email to your prof while you’re seriously sick.
Signed, a person who somehow came up with “dear hello, I am sick and not sure if I’ll be alive to come tomorrow and I’m sorry, best slutantions, [name]”.
I mean, if someone wrote that to me, I’d probably believe they were sick.
“Slutantions” has me crying laughing
i once emailed my professor with a migraine. a mistake.
“I amsick will not to choir because i have a heache. i Hope its very and i am so sorry
love,
blue”
the subject line was “OW”
THE SUBJECT LINE IS THE BEST PART JSJFJSJDJS JUST IMAGINE GETTING AN EMAIL WITH NO CONTEXT OTHER THAN “OW”
As someone who has taught college, please send those emails because 1) We WILL believe that; no one would write that on purpose and 2) we need a laugh sometimes.
On the other side of this, once after getting taken to the ER by ambulance, I got an email from the professor whose class I’d passed out in, and the message had no text, just the subject line “you good?”
Reblogging for the last addition
Claritin makes me weird, but I have allergies so there’s about a month and a half block of time where I’m taking Claritin and am just weird most of the time.
Anyway, my last year of college, I got the flu or something in late March and was also taking Mucinex. I told my professor I couldn’t come to class one day by email except I couldnt think of what to say, so my medicated ass decided to make a Fry meme. I think it said something like “Not sure if I can go to class with a head the size of Texas, bottom text.” I didn’t think until the next day that it probably wasn’t socially-acceptable to tell your philosophy professor you weren’t coming to class via Tumblr style memes. When i got back to class, i found that she’d printed it out and taped it to the classroom bulletin board.
Oh shit you guys i turned on my WinXP laptop that I used to use back then.
IT WAS ON THE DESKTOP. THIS IS WHAT I SENT.
It’s even worse than i remember it
I laugh myself hoarse every time this post comes around, so here it is again.
Once emailed a professor from my hospital bed high on painkillers after a really bad car crash which my heart actually stopped the email “Dead cant class sory”
i was very sick over new years and one day i woke up to find i had emailed my manager in the middle of the night:
she said it was the most beautiful sick email she’s ever gotten

*playing Pokken Tournament with my brother. when we were younger, he'd always beat me effortlessly. but things have changed, and finally we're a match for each other. i'm playing as gardevoir, because what else did you expect from me. my brother is playing as pikachu libre, who is really hard for gardevoir to deal with (i'll explain why at the end of the post lol). mom's watching us fight, making comments on stuff in the game.*
me, to our mom: "This is the Pokemon that [brother] thinks I have a crush on... Which I don't!"
brother: "Yes you do, you even told me!"
me, blushing & losing my focus: "Wh- No I didn't!" (<- lying)
mom: "Honestly though, I can totally see that... She's just so beautiful. She's like a fairy... I think I have a crush on her." (???? i thought my mom was straight but whatever)
me: "Well she's a Fairy-type, so, yeah, she is like a fairy."
*half an hour later. we're tied 2 games to 2. this is the very last round of our last game of the night, and both of us are at 2/3 wins. it's incredibly close.*
*things are looking good for me now. both pokemon are at low health, but i'm pretty locked in, and despite pikachu libre's speed, he can't seem to get a hit in right now.*
brother: "Holy crap, you're just... you're dealing so much damage every time..."
me: "That's the beauty of using technical Pokemon like Gardevoir... put the effort into learning them, and they become incredibly strong. You can't do well with them if you just button mash."
...
me: "You see, when Gardevoir and I win together like this... it's because our bond is unshakably strong."
brother: "[my name]... c'mon."
me: "Are you kissing Pikachu Libre? Nah, I didn't think so... and that's why I'm kicking your ass."
brother: "Mom walked in just as you said that."
*i manage to KO him. winning against him for the night.*
me (grinning proudly as gardevoir's win animation plays (she does a cute little bow)): "You know what? I really don't care anymore."
honestly though? caring about gardevoir enough to put significant effort into learning how to use her, is genuinely the only way to succeed with her in pokken tournament. she deals a shitton of damage & has an attack for everything, but you'll flail around like a magikarp if you don't bother to learn all the special moves she has. you have to really train, until executing the right move at the right time, every time... just becomes muscle memory. that's how technical she is. in other words, you need to have true devotion to allow gardevoir to reach her full potential... and me, being a lovestruck pokephile who's obsessed with her, i've got plenty to give.
whereas with pikachu libre you can just button mash without bothering to put any effort into him. the little bastard just zips around all the time & avoids all of gardevoir's attacks. so even if gardevoir and i spend hours training together, that little electric rat still moves faster than stored power does. ugh.
his main might hard counter mine, but in the end, it's my love for her that brings out gardevoir's true strength... and gives me any chance against him.
i like how it's in line with how gardevoir's powers work canonically. the more love and dedication you show her, the more powerful she'll become when she fights for you. :)
If this isn't a basil pesto review, I will be disappointed
None of you know how to read, which is cool
lots of words i don't understand
