So my FIRST piece of information if you’re still a teen is that genuinely as you get older it will get easier to regulate your emotions. During adolescence our brains are undergoing a lot of growth and change that genuinely does make it harder to do this, on a scientific level. However, practicing emotional regulation skills can still help a lot and if you can find something that works it will make life easier going forward

It’s not lost on me how Jason is the only Robin to come from a life of poverty and crime, and is treated like a fundamentally broken monster in many comic books, given even less grace than Damian. “Something is not right with that boy” FUCK YOU DC. as Grace ages, his eyesight naturally gets worse and his glasses no longer help. when he offhandedly mentions his more-blurry-than-usual vision to Rocky one day, Rocky first freaks out, and then, after Grace patiently explains why human eyesight gets worse the longer a person lives, Rocky immediately consults the laptop Grace gave him. he studies the shape of various lenses, he consults images of frames, and he shares the problem with Adrian. he becomes mildly obsessed with glasses and wonders again at the oddity of the human body and the need for eyesight at all.

but after a few days, Rocky knocks on Grace’s door and behind him is a container nearly overflowing with the hundreds of glasses he’s made. there is every style Grace could possibly think of, and a few of Rocky’s own designs, all with clear xenonite lenses. what follows is hours of trying on frames and finding the most accurate lenses and joyful shenanigans, and Grace fondly thinks of the day they were trying to find a good voice for Rocky.

in the end Grace chooses one of Rocky’s designs. what else was he going to pick?

today i had a very weird experience

the scene: Wrigley Field, Chicago.

the players: Me, a novelist and unpaid intern for a coffee company that gives all its profit to charity.

A Nice teacher named I think Claire

An older gentleman with hate in his heart

the precise circumstance: It's the eighth inning. The Chicago Cubs are losing 17-1. For those of you who don't watch baseball, a 17-1 game is not competitive. The game is over. They only continue playing because major league baseball has not yet adopted a Mercy Rule.

the event: The nice teacher named I think Claire stops me as I am returning to my seat from having visited the restroom. She says that she is a big fan of mine, and that she really loves my books, and asks if she can have a picture. I say of course. It is a genuine delight to meet Claire at this noncompetitive baseball game mostly notable for the pounding heat of Chicago summer.

And then the older gentleman with hate in his heart leaps up and shouts, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU'RE IN MY SIGHT LINE."

Apparently, Claire and I are blocking his view of one pitch of this blowout baseball game. I apologize to the man and explain that we're just taking a quick picture, and then he says something that I can't repeat on tumblr*, and then we take the picture and the encounter ends.

DO NOT BE LIKE THIS OLDER MAN WITH HATE IN HIS HEART. ALLOW PEOPLE TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS WITH UNPAID INTERNS DURING NONCOMPETITIVE MOMENTS IN NONCOMPETITIVE SPORTING EVENTS.

came back wrong in the sense that the person who revived you subtly or even obviously changed aspects of your appearance to conform better to their concept of beauty, but no one else notices, or thinks that you look better like this anyway so they don't care and are even jealous of you. came back wrong in the sense that you never consented to be brought back; don't know who dressed you like this and arranged your body in the position that you woke up in; it feels like a violation that no-one will admit to. came back wrong in that everyone is so smotheringly protective of you now; won't let you take even minor risks or "abuse" your newly-revived body with substances and poor lifestyle choices.
