I was going to link to all the references used in here but frankly I’m exhausted from having this whole farce of a debate in the first place. As my dad just pointed out to me, “you can’t educate a closed mind”.
I just find so much of this so upsetting. Am I being ridiculous?
OH WAIT THERE’S MORE

Some of you are reblogging because you think its funny that programmers would talk to ducks. I’m reblogging because I think its funny picturing a programmer explaining their code, realizing what they did when they explain the bad code, then grabbing the strangling the duck while yelling “WHY WAS THE FIX THAT SIMPLE!? AM I GOING BLIND!”
AS A PROGRAMMER I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU FUCKING DO WE HAD TO BAN THE DUCKS FROM MY CLASSES BECAUSE EVERYONE WOULD FLIP THE DUCK OR THROW IT AT A WALL OR SOMETHING WHEN THEY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM IN THEIR CODE
so that’s the function of a rubber duck

So I realised I never did an end-of-course post, and I graduated over 2 weeks ago now.
*party popper, short fanfare*
I'm simultaneously really relieved and glad it's over, but also will definitely miss being at Makers regularly. I've picked up (and retained) more than I had ever hoped, which can only be a good thing. Unfortunately, in continuing to code (especially re-doing some of the tests), I still have moments like this:
which, y'know, isn't the best coding practise in the world. But at other times, I find myself being able to write things far quicker and better than I had done before, and it's surprising and gratifying.
Now just on the scary job-hunt. I had planned to take a few weeks to make sure all my code was fabulous first, but I really can't afford that time now. I NEED MONEY GODDAMMIT. Mostly because that will mean I can move out of living with my mother, bless her. We really get on so much better when we're not in the same county. So far I've had a lot of people approach me about interviews, but any time I've applied for something that goes via recruiters I don't get an interview because of course my background isn't in computer science, and they have to sift the applicants somehow. It's very frustrating.
I also definitely need to get stuck into some angular.js and some more javascript, as those crop up most in front-end work. Also probably should learn at least what C# looks like, and how to do some basic stuff in it.
My secret dream job does hire programmers, even without huge amounts of knowledge, but I'm currently too scared to apply in case I don't get it >.< which I know is very stupid. But it's such a dream I've had and for such a long time that I couldn't bear to not get it at this stage. Blargh. We shall see.
