I doodle when Iâm nervous
Sunday Scully. She ran into Mulder like this â well, OK, he made it look like an accidental run-in but heâd been at the coffee place across from the fancy grocery store for an hour, watching the door, because sheâd casually mentioned when they got in from Seattle yesterday afternoon that she might be in the mood to make something today from the cookbook somebodyâd given her years ago. He gets the arborio rice from the top shelf for her, picks up some shallots while sheâs selecting mushrooms one. at. a. time, waits with her while they grate a half cup of fresh parm at the cheese case, leaves her to contemplate the olive oils while he slips off to get a very nice bottle of wine (heâs not telling her *how* nice, or sheâll say itâs too much and he should put it back, but he wants her to have this and he can afford it so never mind what she doesnât see). Of course by this time heâs wrangled an invitation to dinner, which he turns into just going back to her place right now to help with the cooking, and he almost tells her he loves her while sheâs measuring the sherry for this recipe with scientific precision, but then she looks up from the measuring cup and her eyes are so blue, he loses his nerve and makes a joke instead and she laughs and thatâs pretty good too. The conversation flows easily, the risotto cooks perfectly, the wine is fantastic, the chocolate mousse heâd concealed in the bag under the salad greens is heavenly. Around nine oâclock he feels he ought to leave, though itâs the last thing in the world he wants. So he helps her clean up the kitchen, and lets her walk him to the door. His hand brushes hers and he wants more than anything to take hold of it and pull her to him but the time isnât quite right yet â not quite yet. In the doorway, he tells her he was in fact lying in wait for her, earlier; with the loveliest smile she says she knows, she saw him on her way in. Next time why donât we just go together, save the stealth for tracking the bad guys? she adds, with a too-casual shrug. Thereâs a next time? he asks, his heart warmed all the way through, a glow in the center of his chest that heâs surprised isnât showing through his shirt. Well, next time weâre home on a Sunday, she answers, both of them knowing how rare a completely free Sunday in the DC is, given their particular line of work and the fact that crime doesnât take weekends off. OK, yeah, yes, he says with a smile that almost splits his face in two; heâs used to making up or stretching out their assignments to cover at least some part of his two most-dreaded days of the week, the Scully-free ones, but now heâs going to make sure that happens a lot less. Her soft âGood night, Mulder,â is as sweet as a kiss and he knows heâll carry it with him all week long. This was the best Sunday of his life.

Always reblog
Always.
Yep
sorry for xfiles posting on main again, but it's just endlessly amusing to me how chris carter, the most christian man alive except for maybe the pope, cast two of the world's horniest individuals on his show, and told them "your characters are never allowed to fuck under any circumstances. ever." so in response to that they were like. hmm but what if this scene where they check each other for alien worms is soo sexually charged. and and what if. they make this real intense eye contact over a corpse. also can we maybe film a makeout session just for kicks
the year is 1993. you turn on your tv to watch an episode of this promising new show about aliens and liver-eating mutants. it seems like John Carpenter's The Thing is what awaits these gorgeous people this week. you pop a forkful of casserole into your mouth, watching as today's guest stars die horrifically on screen. then suddenly-
your casserole gone cold and forgotten, you feel, inexplicably, as though you've just witnessed two people fuck raw on a procedural show.
so in an attempt to actually use positive thinking, anytime i fuck up and my brain reacts as if ive cause a minor apocalyptic event, i compare my fuck up to the 4 minute fuck up committed by the crew of the uss william d porter.
and only today, as i was having to explain what happened to my mom when i was explaining the whole comparison thing, did i realise that most people dont know about it and ive decided that needs to change because its objectively hilarious.
...which is a weird thing to say about an event that occured on a warship in 1943, specifically november 14th.
see the uss william d porter was a fletcher-class destroyer but you dont need to know what that means, just that she had guns that went bang bang and that she was escorting another ship, the uss iowa, to cairo.
while they were on their way there, they performed some gun trials like testing the anti-aircraft guns or the torpedos. and while they were running a torpedo drill, the crew of the porter managed to fire a live torpedo straight at the iowa which you know, in terms of a list of things to do while escorting a ship, shooting a torpedo at them is not on that list.
especially if the president of the united states is on board.
yeah so fdr was on board and the gun trials were actually his idea, and part of the trials was that they were conducted under radio silence.
and that means the crew of the porter couldnt just call the iowa to be like "move out the way, we accidentally shot a torpedo at you."
but they did have signal lamps and you know, the signalman on board was trained to signal this exact kind of message.
...and uh never mind, the signalman did manage to successfully tell the iowa that a torpedo was coming toward them but wasnt as successful when it came to the direction the torpedo was coming from.
not all hope is lost though because the signalman could still use the signal lamp to correct his previous mistake and-, never mind, he announced that the porter was reversing, which she wasnt.
yeah so at catastrophic mistake number 3, they broke radio silence to warn the iowa and she managed to turn out of the way just in time which meant no one got hurt. and even though the inquiry into the incident led to chief torpedoman (fantastic job title btw) lawton dawson being sentences to hard labour, fdr intervened and waved away his sentence, saying it was all an accident.
but yeah, so thats my new measure for "how much did i really fuck up?" and when i compared accidentally picking up a pencil case without a tag on it in wilko, turns out it was a very minor fuck-up. yes, the cashier had to ask another worker to grab a duplicate so they could scan the barcode, but i didnt nearly kill the president during wartime via accidental friendly fire
@electricpentacle hi how does it feel to be the funniest person on this goddamn site
Okay but if we're talking supreme fuckups in maritime history I gotta butt in because that's my special interest. The Evergiven is a no brainer. Queen of the North was a passenger ship that somehow managed to run into an island because the crew was vibing too hard to the music on the bridge (allegedly).
My favorite is the Pasha Bulker though. Let me explain.
Imagine you're a fhjdnormous coal carrier off the coast of Australia. You wanna go to Newcastle to load coal, as you do. Unfortunately the queuing system at Newcastle is dogshit so boats are just anchoring all over the place. That's not great. But luckily, your crew has The Australian Pilot on board, which gives detailed information about this part of the world and how to navigate it.
A storm is coming in. But fear not! The anchors will hold in the predicted wind speeds. Unrelated, did you know that single gusts can be up to 40% stronger than average wind speed? This is also described in the Australian Pilot. Take a guess if anyone on the Pasha Bulker read this very helpful little book.
(And to be fair, it was a strong storm - there's reports of entire sofas being blown along a street.)
Alright, you're dragging your anchor and the coast authorities asked if the ship needs help. What do you respond?
> Yes, oh God idk what I'm doing here.
> Ugh, no I got this.
If you chose the latter option, you did the same thing as the Pasha Bulker's master (sorta like but not the same as a Captain).
He did this SEVERAL TIMES, while the continent of Australia was coming closer. And closer. And closer. At this point, people were gathering at the shore because they knew the ship was going to run aground and that's not something you see every day.
The master was in denial until the Pasha Bulker ran aground on a reef just in front of the shoreline. I saw the pictures first in high school and thought they were fake, it looks insane. (Ocean-going coal carriers are fuckin HUGE.)
So yeah, you're probably doing fine.
Me: that first picture doesn't look that insane what's with the second wait shit fuck
Enantiomers
After Scully came out of surgery, Mulder was there waiting in her hospital room for her.
Mulder whispered her name to her, and Scully's eyes fluttered open at the sound. She smiled, a loopy, close-mouthed greeting, and clumsily waved a hand towards him. He caught it, and wrapped his fingers around hers. This was their secret handshake borne of heavy emotion and long hospital hours passed by the otherâs bedside.
Here, Mulder and Scully's fingers claimed and held each other's, as if at the center of some sort of an interlocking spiral. Scully chuckled lowly, and then spoke indistinctly, murmuring to him. He leaned in to hear what she said.
"We're chiral, you'n'me."
"Chiral?" He asked. "As in the mathematical concept of two mirror images, whose objects are not superposable upon each other?
"Mhmph."
A flutter warmed Mulder's chest. Scully. Only she could describe what he felt in such a mathematical metaphor. His affection for her bloomed every day.
"Like hands, y'see." Scully shifted, unwrapped her fingers from around his until they met palm to palm. His hands, much larger than hers, dwarfed hers in size, and yet Scully looked at them as if there was a magic to the two of them. As if what had only been appendages were now a synchrony. "If our hands tried to occupy the same space in the same direction, they wouldn't be symmetrical. But when pressed together like this... the symmetry reveals itself. You're my reflection, Mulder."
Startlingly Mulder felt near to tears. He took her hand between both of his and pressed a slow kiss to her palm, and then her hand to his heart. He admitted, "I know."
She smiled up sleepily at him. He leaned in to press a kiss to her forehead, and settled at her bedside to sit her vigil.
Scully, as ever, recontextualizing his world with her presence and her science. Scully and Mulder, as if they were two molecules, expanding the known definitions of partner.

I was talking about this with a friend but a really interesting cultural shift over the last ohhhhhh ten years maybe is that many people in fandoms view themselves as stakeholders and not audience members. Because of that, they think that the fandom should be running things, or at least have an acknowledged say in how something is run. And every reminder that they are not in control, no matter how small, bothers them.
This has always existed to an extent but it used to be very siloed and only noticeably prevalent in certain fandoms and everyone else in fandom spaces generally agreed that it wasnât healthy to act like that. Now itâs seemingly every fandom with an online presence and itâs all happening much more publicly than ye olde Trekkie forum.
I do think that the increase in access to creatives through social media, extended promotional cycles where you do a thousand interviews and all of them get clipped for instagram and tiktok, and an increase in entertainment and fandom aggregate social media accounts which keep people updated on all of those clips and every second of the creative process has had a big hand in creating this sense of ownership that audience members feel. It makes us feel like weâre on the team because we think we know so much. But we are not and we donât.

âthose look like radiation burns. where did you get that?â // âat the second crash site, in about fifty feet of water at the bottom of sacandaga lake.â
the x-files is fun because any time you get a legitimately good episode they make sure to follow it up with some shit like The Ghoul That Caused The Challenger Disaster or Amish Pheromones. really cleanses the palate
âthereâs an ai tool for thatâ okay ?? thereâs probably an ed sheeran song for it too who gives a fuck
Earthset
The Artemis II crew captured this view of an Earthset on April 6, 2026, as they flew around the Moon. The image is reminiscent of the iconic Earthrise image taken by astronaut Bill Anders 58 years earlier as the Apollo 8 crew flew around the Moon. The Apollo 8 mission was the first crewed spacecraft to circumnavigate the Moon.
For more imagery from the mission, visit our Artemis II Multimedia Page.

I keep seeing inspirational tradwife adjacent mass-manufactured art using the phrase Nevertheless, She Persisted, and every time I see this, I want to just like. Take a marker and footnote it to remind everyone that this phrase came from McConnell censuring Senator Elizabeth Warren who was speaking out against the confirmation of noted racist Jeff Sessions as the Attorney General in 2017.
So since that was almost 10 years ago and some people may not know or may not remember, I'm footnoting it here so every time Y'ALL see it in tradwife adjacent mass-manufactured fluff-feminist artwork, you too can remember that it doesn't reference just anything, it references a woman speaking up on behalf of vulnerable and endangered populations and being professionally rebuked for it--and persisting anyway. I think it matters.
we told you so
