one of those art pieces i make which has a target audience of one (me). i love scullayyyy
perhaps controversial, but i think msr would be less popular if mulder and scully had a more conventional dating arc. instead, their romance is written almost like queer baiting, built mostly on yearning, stolen moments that never come up again, and emphasis that THEY are absolutely the most important person in the other's life... just enough teases of romance to keep the viewer tantalized... the YEARNING. the space for everyone to project their own interpretation -- they're soulmates, they're best friends, they're married, they're in a QPP, they transcend terms like "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" but not #wifegate. they're partners. they're mulder and scully. they invented love -- but why should their love look like anyone else's?

Thank you for the tag, @settle-down-frohike. Just today I was driving past a cornfield and got the cornfield FEELS so hard. Only you guys would know. You have no idea how much I miss all of you and Mulder and Scully. I'm fine, in the Scully sense, and writing stuff, but it's always harder than writing fic. Anyway, I scrounged around and this was all I could find:
Scully: I know a man, a man in the abstract, who monitors stations broadcast by the stars: he has an ear for a runnel under science, a feel for fallacy; the beat of his life is set to an Indian flute or the droplets of the Amazon onto leaf brackets after a storm.

Fic: All Awash With Angels 1/17 (MSR, T)
Cover art by @rosenkranz-does-things (commission them or buy prints of their work!)
Scully and Mulder go undercover as a couple to investigate a rash of mysterious deaths in a remote Alaskan village to which there are no witnesses. (This work is complete; chapters will be posted on Fridays; a smutty epilogue will be posted separately.)
75 k words to be posted in 17 chapters + epilogue; T for flirting, mild blood/gore/violence (canon-typical), and uncoworkerly thoughts; the late Season 1 baby agents undercover married slow burn only-one-bed fic cryptic cryptid monster of the week I always wanted to write (read on AO3)

The eyes open to a cry of pulleys, And spirited from sleep, the astounded soul Hangs for a moment bodiless and simple As false dawn. Outside the open window The morning air is all awash with angels. - Richard Wilbur, Love Calls Us To The Things Of This World
At least the flight to Anchorage had involved a jet, small but steadier than the prop plane that had taken them to Icy Cape. Scully had been on worse flights. The view out the window had been stunning: snow-capped ridges of mountains where the Rockies and the Coast Mountains pushed into Canada, etched with deep forests and shining water. Anchorage sat at the head of the Cook Inlet. Their flight had come in over the water that lay just past the end of the runway. When they stepped into the parking lot, the air was crisp, a hint of salt under the usual notes of asphalt and exhaust. She breathed in, holding the sea in her lungs for a moment, grounding herself in this new place that smelled like her childhood homes.
Scully was glad theyād dressed down for the flight: jeans and a sweatshirt made a better uniform here than her put-together skirt suits. Besides, they were here in a sort of casual undercover way, since there werenāt any witnesses left to interrogate. This case was going to be about shoe leather, not testimony. Or in this case, shoe rubber: theyād broken out the hiking boots.
āFirst impressions?ā Mulder asked.
Scully looked around. Beyond the airport, mountains notched into the sky, their snowy shoulders barely brighter than the overcast. āI think I like Anchorage better than that Arctic research facility.ā
āToo bad weāre not staying here.ā Mulder gazed over the parking lot. It looked like any other airport parking lot, crammed with cars. The wind caught at the open front of his flannel overshirt. āRemind me where weāre going?ā
āWeāre driving to Homer and then taking a boat to the village of Halibut Cove,ā Scully said, dropping her duffel on the ground and pulling a well-worn map out of her backpack. "To be honest, village seems to be a generous term."
Mulder slipped on his sunglasses. The sky was cloudy but bright, reflecting on the distant water and the windshields of the cars. āHow long a drive?ā
āFour hours or so,ā Scully said, folding the map back and tracing the path with her finger. āStraight down Alaska Route 1 until we run out of road.ā
āWeāll need snacks,ā Mulder told her. āMaybe even a Slurpee if such delicacies are available. Nonstop summer fun, Scully.ā

every day people sign on to fox mulderās internet and say things like āthey should make nighttime scenes in mulderās apartment brighter.ā no they should not!!! sorry if youāre not prepared for the truth that there is no more strikingly beautiful image in the history of television than mulder and scully silhouetted against the streetlights cutting through his blinds. oh should caravaggio lose the shadows too
Challenged myself to write a UH drabble based on this pic:
Heās sitting with his feet perched against the coffee table, a notepad balanced against his thigh. His writing stops periodically as he gazes at her, trying to concentrate on her book.
Finally she snaps her head towards him. āWhat, Mulder?ā
With a secret smile he resumes his scribbling.
She rises, leaning over the back of his chair. āYouāre writing a poem about me?ā
He flips the notepad over, giving her a quick peck on the lips. āItās not done yet.ā
āButā¦ā
She stares after him as he heads into the kitchen to start dinner.
He never ceases to amaze her.
Chapter 4: 'The Fibonacci Sequence'
Chapter 4 of 6. Link on AO3
Scully makes a discovery at Mulder's apartment, and the story tracks the evolution of their partnership and relationship from that point on. The story explores the role of mystery in Scully's life. Seasons 3-7.
From Chapter 4: Scenes from late season 6
After the paramedics, after the gasping shock of the attack, after the police have left his apartment, Mulder says, āScully, letās get you home.ā She agrees wordlessly, handing her keys to him, and letting him hold her hand as they walk to her car. She wonders as he drives her car towards her apartment whether he plans to stay the night, but he hasn't packed a bag. She considers that he might not have even unpacked his bag from California. It had only been a couple of weeks after theyād returned that Padgett had appeared and read her life for clues: her cross, her parking permit, her calves, her heart.
This is part of 'The Work of An Instant', a series of stories in which Mulder and Scully share a moment of sudden realization about their feelings for one another, while they are surrounded by other people. Each story stands alone, and can be read by itself.
Final two chapters to follow early next week. Thank you for reading & commenting!

The Lovers
Part Nine of The Fool's Journey.
Her hands are still shaking. Agent Bocks and the officer from the Minneapolis PD whose name Mulderās already forgotten donāt appear to notice, but from his vantage point he can see the way she presses them together beneath the table, can almost feel her willing them to still.
He keeps playing the tape back in his head, keeps reliving the look on Scullyās face as he gently tipped her chin up toward him, the way her lips quivered and her blue eyes filled with tears. Stoic Scully, always so solid, so unflappable. Rarely has he seen her really struggle, and never has she allowed him to witness her fall apart, not even after her abduction. Never until now. He canāt get it out of his head, the way her defenses crumbled as she fell into his embrace, her arms finding their way around him, clutching him tighter as the fear and the adrenaline overwhelmed her. Something in him broke open.
Now, watching as she answers their seemingly endless questions, he notices again the tremor sheās trying to hide. Enough is enough. āHow about we start rapping this up, fellas,ā he says, stepping forward and extending to his full height. āI think youāve got everything you need.ā
Read the rest on AO3.

So Tactile
Dana Scully has been holding out on him.
Sure, heās had his suspicions for a while that sheās naturally a physically affectionate personāher inherent kindness and warm nature makes it fairly apparent. She hugs her mother easily, tickles her nephew, and heād seen her frequently hold hands with Melissa whilst sheād been alive. During the many (technically) platonic years of their partnership sheād never hesitated to stand close to him, touch his arm, orāhis favoriteārun her fingers through his hair, even if it was under the guise of some medical-related inspection. Heād simply attributed her restraint to the understandable desire to be taken seriously in her testosterone-drenched career history.
But now that theyāre sharing this new, wonderful thing thatās resulted in them brushing their teeth side by side in her bathroom mirror in the mornings, he can only describe her asĀ tactile. She hooks her finger in the belt loop of his jeans while he washes the dishes. She cuddles up on his lap while he watches Monday night football. She strokes his forearm, rubs his back, kisses his shoulder. Any opportunity to touch him, to connect with him physically, whether sweet or sultry, she seems to take. Sheād cheekily smacked his backside three mornings ago while reaching for her toast and heād nearly choked on his coffee in surprise and delight.
And now, wandering together through an unassuming DC farmers market on a lazy Saturday morning, she casually and comfortably grips his wrist, sliding her palm against his until their fingers naturally interlock in a soft clasp. Her easy affection makes him feel seen in a way he canāt recall ever having experienced before. It fills him with the desire to curl around her, sequester the two of them in his apartment where theyāre safe and warm, and never let the world harm her again.
He attempts to smother a chuckle at this last thought, but in keeping with her naturally observant nature, Scully notices and pinches his elbow.
āWhat?ā She purses her lips briefly, curiously. She looks so open, so sweetly unguarded with him. Heās still getting used to seeing her like this and he canāt believe heās lucky enough to have the privilege. He shakes his head dismissively, allowing his face to break into an easy smile.
āNothing, honestly,ā he reassures, āIāve just noticed youāre so touchy since weāveā¦been seeing each other.ā
He feels her arm tense as she draws back a little, and if she hadnāt taken his statement so seriously he would have laughed again at the stricken expression on her face. She looks adorably mortified.Ā
āIs thatā¦not welcome?ā Her voice is small and he halts, turning to face her fully.
āIt is absolutely,ā he hastily corrects the misunderstanding, āutterly, and completely welcome. If you think for even a moment that I havenāt been enjoying how playful and physical youāve been, consider this my effort to correct that.ā She blesses him with a brief, grateful smile and dips her head, her face partially obscured by the sweep of her hair. He runs the knuckle of his forefinger gently down her cheek.
āIād justāsince Iāve known you, youāve always seemed to be so comfortable with touch and I just assumed thatās how you express yourā¦How youāre feeling.ā She murmurs. She brings their clasped hands up between them, tracing his knuckles with her fingertip.
āIāve had to resist touching you in the all the ways I wanted to for so long,ā she gives him a sheepish glance, āThat now that I can, I canāt seem to stop.ā She rolls her eyes at herself. He frees his hand from hers, reaching to cradle her face.
āI know the feeling,ā he murmurs against her lips, and kisses her.
