anyways, my blog will ALWAYS be a safe space for people with no/low empathy, for any reason, be it a personality disorder, autism, depression, trauma, psychosis, or anything else. you are not inherently bad or evil and are deserving of love and respect. this will always be a place where you are welcome and safe.
(okay and encouraged to rb, bc being low/no empathy is a profoundly lonely experience and we deserve to know we are safe and supported)

Apollo and Hyacinthus
By Stefano Ricci
~
O Hyacinthus!
Deadly pale the God's face went-as pallid as the boy's.
With care he lifted the sad huddled form.
The kind god tries to warm you back to life, and next endeavors to attend your wound,
and stay your parting soul with healing herbs.
His skill is no advantage, for the wound is past all art of cure.
As if someone, when in a garden, breaks off violets, poppies, or lilies hung from golden stems,
then drooping they must hang their withered heads, and gaze down towards the earth beneath them;
so, the dying boy's face droops, and his bent neck, a burden to itself, falls back upon his shoulder :
โYou are fallen in your prime defrauded of your youth, O Oebalides [Hyakinthos]!' Moaned Apollo
`I can see in your sad wound my own guilt, and you are my cause of grief and self-reproach.
My own hand gave you death unmerited--I only can be charged with your destruction.--
What have I done wrong? Can it be called a fault to play with you?
Should loving you be called a fault?
And oh, that I might now give up my life for you! Or die with you!
But since our destinies prevent us you shall always be with me,
and you shall dwell upon my care-filled lips.
The lyre struck by my hand, and my true songs will always celebrate you.
A new flower you shall arise, with markings on your petals,
close imitation of my constant moans
~

Hyacinthus was a Spartan Prince and lover Apollo. He died when the discus thrown by Apollo accidentally struck his head. From the blood of Hyacinthus sprung the larkspur flowers. Apollo, heartbroken, inscribed the exclamation of woe, Ai Ai, on the petals of the flowers and promised to always remember his lover in his songs and music.

Hellenic Pagans 2000 years ago: โWe sacrifice goats to Zeus because heโs a big, strong, unstoppable rape machineโ
Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, and WitchTok apparently: โDamn thatโs kinda fucked up broโ
Neo-pagan Tumblr users: โNooooo Zeus is such a nice guy he told us himself ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญโ
Suidas s.v. Xenios :
"Xenios (Hospitable) : One who guards hospitality. Zeus is also called protector of the rights of hospitality (Xenios)."

Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana 4. 31 (trans. Conybeare) (Greek biography C1st to 2nd A.D.) :
"The Lakedaimonians flocked around him [the prophet Apollonios of Tyana] and invited him to share the hospitality of their shrine of Zeus."

Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 31. 4 :
"Within the precinct [of Demeter at Megalopolis in Arkadia] is a temple of Zeus Philios (Friendly). Polykleitos of Argos made the image; it is like Dionysos in having buskins as footwear and in holding a beaker in one hand and a thyrsos in the other, but an eagle sitting on the thyrsos does not fit in with the received accounts of Dionysos."

Pausanias, Description of Greece 9. 34. 5 :
"The distance from Koroneia to Mount Laphystios and the precinct of Zeus Laphystios is about twenty stades. The image is of stone. They say that when Athamas was about to sacrifice here Phrixos and Helle, a ram with his fleece of gold was sent by Zeus to the children, and that on the back of this ram they made good their escape."

Strabo, Geography 14. 2. 25 (trans. Jones) (Greek geographer C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :
"Stratonikeia [in Karia] is a settlement of Makedonians . . . There are two temples in the country of the Stratonikeians, of which the most famous, that of Hekate . . . And near the city is the temple of Zeus Khrysaoreus, the common possession of all Karians, whither they gather both to offer sacrifice and to deliberate on their common interests. Their League, which consists of villages, is called Khrysaorian."

โHow can anyone who, while worshiping Zeus the God of Companions, sees their neighbors in need and does not give them a penny - how can they think they are worshiping Zeus properly?โ
written ~1,700 years ago
I think Hellenic pagans 2,000 years ago would be appalled by the way society speaks of Zeus currently. as a fictional narrative it can be used as a moral lesson but equating that with active polytheists and the God we worship is nonsensical.
please realize the sources for myths are poets, playwrights, and fiction writers. their job was to entertain & cater to the people (aristocratic men) and the people (aristocratic men) love seeing themselves reflected in the most powerful and loved God in the pantheon. acting like you can speak for something you know nothing about helps absolutely no one.
if you're interested in what He was really like though, read what the common folk, observant travelers, and devout Hellas had to say about Him
Also, the Zeus myths we have today were approved by Christian monks in order to keep people from worshipping the Greek gods again because this was all during the Christianization of Europe.
Please remember that between now and then there have been thousands of years worth of propaganda and slander against the gods in order to keep people from worshipping them.
Plus, anything positive about the gods would be scrutinized and the people pushing the positive narrative of the Greek gods would get killed because society was trying to only believe in ONE god so they would get questioned and killed by the Spanish Inquisition!
What's left is the BS takes on jealous and rapist gods without people realizing those stories have been curated for people to specifically despise them.
Please open a history book!

art honoring Apollon
i'm graduating with a degree in art history in a few weeks and realized that even though my degree focuses on mythology in art, i've never made a post like this. here are my favorite pieces of art honoring Apollon.
In order: 1) Apollo and the Muses by John Singer Sargent, 1921, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, rotunda mural; 2) Parnassus, or Apollo and the Muses by Simon Vouet, c. 1640, Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest; 3) Apollo in His Chariot by Herbert James Draper, c. 1908, Draper's Hall, London; 4) Apollo and the Nine Muses by Tommaso Conca, 1782-87, Vatican Museum; 5) Apollo served by the Nymphs by Francois Girardon and Thomas Regnaudin, 1666-76, from the Versailles Gardens; 6) Apollo by John Cheere, 1755, National Palace of Queluz; 7) Apollo Crowning Himself by Antonio Canova, 1781-82, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; 8) Apollo by Artus Quellinus, 1651, Royal Palace Amsterdam
โBeauty of every sort, whether of art, music, poetry or youth, sanity and moderationโall are summed up in Apollo.โ

Incidentally, hellenistic greeks felt that hospitality towards foreigners and guests was a huge moral obligation enforced by Zeus himself. Hosts were expected to serve food before even asking who they were or where they were from.
Guests were expected to entertain with stories and news from the outside world, and to extend the same hospitality to other people.
Just a topical history fact
