Les Amis de l'ABC | filo! college au headcanons, pt. 1

Note: I was tempted to write what I think their political affiliations would be or what orgs/parties they'd join but. heh. I can't do that. I referenced a few issues that are still ongoing at the time I posted this so maybe send an ask if you'd like to know more TvT. I really tried not to but oh well

Enjolras:

- manileño. Belongs to one of those dynasties that refuses to recognize itself as such. Private schooled all his life and halfway through college but transferred from ateneo to UP diliman in his 3nd year

- his parents paid to get him out of suspension multiple times, before he cut them off. He studied legal management, got frustrated, shifted to economics and political science.

- I wouldn't say he's that conyo, but he's very fluent in english and kinda struggles with tagalog. He'll speak bisaya whenever convenient but he's not good at it either lol

- Starts multiple organizations but doesn't know his way around social media, which at first made them incredibly exclusive and difficult to join.

- has the most cases of getting red-tagged and went viral for it. He disowned his family around his 3rd year, the same time he transferred. He also gets a lot of shit for going to UP, because of his wealthy background. He completely accepts the backlash and refuses to admit he's broke and on a scholarship. Not because of pride or anything, he thinks it's deserved because of how much he despises his family

- on the other hand, he's on a watch list because npa allegations, which he absolutely may or may not be a part of. It wasn't any better when he tried to enroll at UP baguio (because mountains)

Combeferre:

- in a family of engineers he chose to study medicine. He's a big advocate for medical progress and rights. Heavy against brain drain. He blew the whistle on his own family during the flood control protests so he got cut off oop

- Enjolras' summer childhood friend from Cebu. Fluent in bisaya and ilonggo. Refuses and rarely speaks English but he's fluent in it too.

- he transferred to UST for medical school and this is how he and Enjolras met once more. He runs a popular online political commentary, and occasionally submits articles to newspapers.

- he's loud as hell in every socmed platform but only in alt accounts. If it weren't for Grantaire, his personal accounts would be empty as hell. He's affiliated with the most organizations.

Courfeyrac:

- student journalist and had been running around journalism clubs and societies since he was young.

- studied legal management alongside Enjolras but unlike him, Courf decided to push through, which results in him meeting Marius in law school.

- Conyo as fuck and the typical kapampangan. See he chooses to be conyo, and finds that it's easy to get along with people with it. He's obnoxious online and pretty well-known alongside Combeferre, except he most definitely posts on tiktok with his government name.

- he probably comes from a family of lawyers. He refuses to be talked into paying the school admin into getting him out of suspension. He also changed his last name and took his mother's. Financially cut off, but not disowned. Somehow his family thinks he'll stop once he takes the bar exam.

- He never takes the bar exam, and refuses to tell his family it's because of his records. He's prohibited from taking the bar exam for like 7 years.

i’m making a post to talk about this with all the main information i feel is needed, so what’s happening to start? At the end of the month a new Les Misérables album is releasing, this recording is of the 40th Anniversary Cast from the WEST END. The cast listed are all entirely from the west end. Except for Jordan Shaw.

Instead Jordan has been replaced with a white actor, James Gish, now while i don’t want to place this blame onto Gish nor say anything against his performance, it’s INCREDIBLY disappointing and honestly ridiculous he’s the enjolras listed. James was NEVER at any of the 40th shows in the west end, the entire time it was Jordan Shaw playing in the role of Enjolras and he never missed a single day throughout the whole run. Jordan would’ve been there for whenever they decided to record, as even Killian Donnelly (Jean Valjean) said this was recorded live! They have INTENTIONALLY removed and replaced him.

[Cast List, Jordan Shaw’s name is nowhere listed despite the rest of the 40th Anniversary company being here] Cameron Mackintosh (The Producer of the musical) did an interview with WhatsOnStage where he’s said he’s decided to splice the two 40th anniversary shows (the west end and the arena tour) but the ONLY songs that have actually been switched are only songs where Jordan would be singing as enjolras. Doesn’t sound like a coincidence right?

This is clear discrimination against Jordan Shaw. The fact they have chosen to remove one of their black principals KNOWING fully well how much this role has meant to Jordan and many other people who take inspiration from him, as well as the fact Jordan has helped to pave the way for us to get more POC enjolras actors! And not to even mention the fact Shaw won an award! An award in the role of Enjolras! He won “Best Supporting Male Actor” ! And it is so incredibly rare for this role to even be recognised especially in this way! Ap surely this would be something they want to promote right? But no, they have chosen not to and instead replaced him. I can’t even begin to imagine how disappointing this must be for Jordan - to see everyone else you worked so hard with get to be apart of this album and seeing that you’ve been the only person cut.

The fact they believed that no one in the fandom would even notice jordan’s removal is incredibly disrespectful and disappointing to me, the fact they thought we would simply turn a blind eye is disgusting. So please, talk about this. Jordan deserves his talent to be recognised.

So what can we do?

Good question! Sadly there isn’t loads, but i don’t think that should stop or discourage us.

Leave comments on every official les mis post you see - and constantly! they have been consistently deleting comments with any mention of Jordan’s name as well as even turning off the comments which shows they know exactly what they’re doing.

To be clear, this wouldn't strictly be a romantic thing. I just think that Enjolras is also the kind of guy to boss around world leaders and unite them to a singular noble cause (what would the inter-galactic equivalent of french nationalism be?) while dragging around an Emotional Support Boyfailure Scientist that he might need to throw on a spaceship. I also think Grantaire would be the saddest and wettest Cool Middle School Teacher w/Ph.D and would also be so scared and unwilling to save Earth in its darkest hour, but would ultimately be so capable of it.

Idk the ExR dynamic has lost a lot of its lustre for me as a romantic pairing but whatever R. Grace and E. Stratt have going on feel perfect to me (and they're also E&R! They could even be E&G if we're so sacreligious we mix initials up)

I don't know if this is a hot take or a cold one or even that relevant anymore, because I've been pretty far from the Les Mis fandom for a while, but I was talking to some French friends today and I remembered how there was talk here for a while about how Modern AU Amis needed to be more diverse. And thinking about most of the fanart/fanfic I've seen with Amis that aren't all white and French, there is just one recommendation I need to give.

You need more Muslims. And you need more Maghrebis.

I know a lot of you are working with US demographics, but those are just not true for France. Keep (South)East Asian Joly if he makes you happy, make Combeferre black if it feels right (France definitely also has a good amount of Subsaharan African immigration, and Vietnam was literally a French colony), but you need to put some Maghrebis and some Muslims in there. Otherwise it just feels wrong.

I think it is important to remember that the amis are students and that if they had lived today, they most likely would have lived in student housing aka shared flats with a disgusting kitchen that is cleaned once every term.

Les amis (and others) as that guy you end up living with in your first year of uni:

Enjolras: That guy who always puts up angry notes about how everyone needs to clean up after themselves (but never does it himself)

Bossuet: That guy who sets off the fire alarm at 6 in the morning every third week.

Cosette: That guy who’s always saying “I need to get back to studying” and then stays in the kitchen chatting about nothing for another three hours.

Montparnasse: That guy at the end of the corridor that no-one has ever seen, and who might be dead, or might have moved out months ago. No-one knows.

Jehan: That guy who always cooks or bakes for everyone in the flat.

Joly: The only guy who actually does any cleaning or takes out the trash. Also “tests” his flatmates every now and then to see if they would notice if he just leaves the trash to rot in the corner of the kitchen. They never do, and he gives up after a couple of days because it’s just filthy and he can’t live like this.

Musichetta: That guy who has friends over ALL. THE. TIME.

Feuilly: That guy who isn’t a student and who is illegally staying in his “friend’s” room for “just a few days” for the whole year.
