Hello! Got a question about sedation. I'm trying to find if there's any kind of medication where an injection would render a patient drowsy, weak, and sedated but still awake and conscious for a significant amount of time. Most of what I've found researching indicates current sedation drugs have fast recoveries unless someone is there continuing to administer doses. The current plot doesn't have anyone present with the patient to top them up on the drug, and they need to be kept in that very calm for about 15 hours time. Does... anything like that exist or should I start looking to rework the idea? Thanks so much for you help!

Modern sedation is like that because we want it to be. IV sedation (such as propofol, ketamine, midazolam, and others) only lasts a few minutes because we generally want to have control over when a person wakes up after a procedure, or we want to be able to titrate the degree of sedation quickly in, say, an ICU setting.

But there are tons of drugs that last longer than that. For example, diazepam is a benzodiazepine that lasts about 12 hours, and phenobarbital is a barbiturate that lasts about 12 hours. A person who had never taken one of these drugs before could definitely become sedated but conscious for the time you're looking for. While slightly more dangerous (there's a narrower difference between an effective and a toxic dose), phenobarbital is more reliably absorbed and lasts longer than diazepam when injected into a muscle.

I know you're in the throes of your Outsiders obsession but I feel like it's my turn to report a whump sighting! Dan Steven in The Terror season 3 (it's an anthology so the other two season don't matter rn)! It's like? What if a Mental Hospital Episode™️ was a whole season? I'm losing my mind he's getting so fucked up and he's trapped in this hospital and if he tries to talk about what's going on it just makes him sound crazy! I'm working on a whump list for it (there's only 4 episodes so far) and I just wanna say it's really good so far!

Oh my god I love that!! See I am so mad I didn't have to read it in school because it FOR SURE would have had a chokehold on me and been a whump awakening! But I didn't!! And I'm mad about it! I want to email my middle school and high school English teachers and be like "WHAT THE FUCK!!" I missed out on decades of being into the Outsiders!!! Now I'm in my 30s reading it and I'm sure it hits different than if I'd have read it in my middle school years. Darry, I love you so much.

All well. At least I found it now! And I'm VERY excited to be here!!! I'm having a freaking blast. Forever grateful that The Outsiders Musical toured here and was a part of my season ticket package cause I'd still be ignorant without that.

I didn't read it in school but my cousin did and she got me to read it and that was one of my first experiences with fandom! I'd been obsessed with stuff before but never talked to other people online about it. My first (and pretty much only) fics that I wrote were in middle school for The Outsiders.
