My beloved wife got super into baking during the pandemic. We have always loved and bonded over Bake Off. These two things culminated in my beloved being gifted with Paul Hollywoods cook book on bread. He’s the bread king, right? Must know how to make good bread?
Readers. Paul Hollywoods cookbook.
I don’t know if it was laziness or mistranslation but when converting the units to our stupid empirical measuring system someone done Fucked Up.
It doesn’t help that Mr. Paulywood is already very spare with his instruction and method. It called for an absolutely absurd amount of yeast, first off. About three times as much yeast as a reasonable person would need to make bread rise but perhaps Mr. Hollywood is compensating.
Next it wanted an egregious amount of salt. Both of us paused over the measurement, hesitating to get on board with such a high salt content. But he’s Mr Bread so we went with it, opting not to tweak the recipe until we’d tried it his way at least once.
It. Was. Awful.
Truly the most repulsive bread either of us had ever had. The loaf was dubbed Paul’s Salty Mess and lives in infamy to this day.
It took two more bakes for my beloved to actually find a proportion of ingredients that was actually agreeable to consume. This involved researching the difference between UK and US yeast which I think we can all agree the editor should have done, as well as finding the the metric recipe on Paul's website to compare. Even the non-fucked up one was still egregiously salty.
The recipe is now highly annotated and the rest of the book regarded with suspicion.
Video: Two machine knit jumpers being unravelled and then reknit into a single jumper, with lots of machine clicky-clacky noises and whirrs
Such a detailed video.
If you're at work in a retail or hospitality environment and you see a sex worker with a client... no you didn't.
If your boss asks you if you think that person's a sex worker, you tell them you do not believe that. You don't report their presence to anyone. You don't joke about it with a coworker. You don't eavesdrop or bother them.
We're working the same as you are. Leave us alone!
Some examples of situations where you might need to keep your mouth shut about a potential sex worker:
You see someone you don't recognize walk past reception at your hotel to head directly for the stairs or elevator or towards the rooms without acknowledging you at the reception desk. Yes, this includes when the person is wearing revealing clothing or a nice dress and heels. This is not your business.
You notice multiple men going to the same hotel room during the same evening, each only staying for an hour or so at a time. This is not your business.
You seat two customers for dinner and work as their waiter/waitress for the night. You see one give an envelope of cash to the other. Yes, this includes when there's a huge age gap between the two and they're being affectionate. This is not your business.
You overhear one customer ask another how much they charge for a night, whilst making drinks for them. You heard nothing. This is not your business.
I do not care what kind of retail or hospitality setting you work in. If you see a sex worker, no you didn't!
if the cops get involved, you know who gets punished? not any of the clients, only the sex worker. not a pimp, not the hotel manager, only the worker; and the cops are liable to sexually assault them as well.
if you have any qualms about sex work, you can start by improving workers' rights as a whole. demilitarizing police. increasing comprehensive sex ed for all ages. battling misogyny in the workplace. under the boot of capitalism, we all suffer - the most vulnerable, such as sex workers, suffer worst. leave them be.
drop whatever you’re doing right now and climb a tree
its pitch black outside, and freezing cold. I think ill climb a tree tomorrow
you climb that fuckin tree right now
I’ve literally never seen this post on my dash when it is not after dark and cold as balls. I’m beginning to think this is a conspiracy to get us eaten by some nocturnal tree demon.

I understand WHY, ethically and practically, you can't just keep whatever animal you want as a pet, but I also think that I, personally, should be allowed to adopt a colossal squid
I'm glad you asked! it is easier to relocate a human than to relocate a colossal squid, so the plan is for me to walk into the ocean and never be seen again
you. you understand.
Sounds like you want to be adopted by the colossal squid, not the other way around
Took a tiny break from commissions to make some little fancy pigeon gryphons, called pyffs.
Finished up and looking pretty in pastel! These pyffs are dedicated little messengers who carry around the mail and look super cute doing it!
You can find them on Redbubble (1, 2, 3, 4) and Teepublic (1, 2, 3)!

Make Ready: Safeguarding Our Movements against Repression
https://crimethinc.com/Safeguarding
Donald Trump has signaled that he is expanding his offensive against immigrants to target critics of his regime as well. In directing repression at an invented category ("antifa") rather than a specific organization or form of activity, he means to convey that regardless of who you are or what you do, you, too, could become a target.
Fortunately, there are already groups that have experience dealing with this kind of repression, and there are concrete steps we can all take to prepare our communities to weather the coming storm. Rather than spreading panic, this will enable us to approach this situation calmly and effectively.
Everyone should read this guide.

an atheist ghost. they refuse to move on to the afterlife on the grounds that the afterlife does not and should not exist
they only respond to ouija board summonings in order to lecture people for participating in non-evidence-based belief systems
exorcisms dont work cause they dont believe in them.
“yeah sure I could ‘go into the light’ as you so eloquently put it, but let’s be analytical about this. worst-case scenario, the afterlife is real and I get cast into some version of Hell for being a nonbeliever. slightly better-case scenario, it’s a reincarnation-based afterlife, which means I end up having to do the whole Existence thing all over again, which frankly seems like a huge roll of the dice. enormously risky, given the low quality of life many people experience, and that’s setting aside philosophical issues of identity, e.g. without the memories and experiences that shaped me, would I even still technically exist as a version of myself I could identify? reincarnation aside, let’s bear in mind there’s no actual evidence there’s even a so-called ‘afterlife’ waiting on the other side–for all we know, my consciousness will just dissolve into nonexistence. again, huge roll of the dice. and even in the best-case scenario? wherein I somehow pass an Arbitrary Morality Test I didn’t sign up for and get accepted into some sort of magical Heaven or whatever? well. consider it from my point of view. all of a sudden I’d be a member of a strange and unfamiliar society, subject to a completely new set of rules and regulations that I probably don’t get a say in. Is ‘Heaven’ a democracy? will I still have access to free will? will I have meaningful choices regarding lifestyle and occupation? what do the holy books say about that, huh? I could be forced to spend a literal eternity worshiping a deity who has made some extremely questionable and problematic decisions regarding the universe. I’m not signing up for that! how is that any better than my current situation? listen buddy, I spent 80 years living in a capitalist hellhole before death Itself finally freed me from all the obligations and restrictions of modern existence. I don’t work, I don’t pay rent or taxes, I just wander from place to place keeping my own schedule, doing my own thing, beholden to neither laws nor peer pressure. as purgatories go, that’s a pretty sweet deal! and what guarantee do I have that any damned afterlife is going to be more tolerable than my current not-existence, huh? none! none whatsoever. skeptic? damn right I’m skeptic! not to mention this whole Heaven-and-Hell dichotomy seems extremely manipulative if not outright abusive, as moral systems go. that’s no way to parent a species! nope. just, nope. this whole religious afterlife nonsense sounds like a whole lot of unnecessary stress and risk. I’m perfectly comfortable staying right where I am, thanks ever so, so you can tell your exorcist to write that out in latin and shove it up his ass”
“the power of christ compels ME?” bitch just because YOU choose to subscribe to a oppressively christian-centric world view doesn’t mean I have to dedicate my afterlife to following the rules of your false gods. if you’re so desperate to get smoke blown up your ass i’m happy to help you shove that thurible way on up there
There was this park near where I grew up. I remember we’d just moved to the area so I was around six and we drove past and saw this waterfront area. My parents decided to check it out so we went for a walk. It was a lovely park, there’s a lazy slough, lots of trees, extremely picturesque. My parents ambled along the trail enjoying the nature while my siblings and I ranged around in their orbit like excitable moons.
Then I saw something odd. Something vibrantly alive down by the water that was entirely the wrong color. I called back my vital scouting info and my family gathered around me. We looked down the steep verge toward the slough, screened by underbrush. We couldn’t quite make out what it was. The only thing we could agree was that it certainly wasn’t a duck. However it was about duck sized and roughly duck shaped. It just wasn’t a duck.
This led to some heated debate amongst my siblings and I but we were forbidden to scramble down the muddy hill to harass the mystery animal. Reluctantly we continued down the trail, speculating wildly when a chicken popped out of a bush in front of us with a train of several chicks.
We froze. The chicken did not. She placidly herded her little puffs across the trail, pecking happily for seeds, unbothered by our proximity. My family had not yet delved into farming and this was the first time any of us kids had seen a chicken up close. It was like a fairytale thing, a creature we had seen over and over in books was suddenly here in the wilderness of the park. We all realized the mystery creature had likewise been a chicken.
Another couple came up the trail and saw us staring.
“Is this your first time at the park?” They asked?
We nodded.
They informed us that this park had become a dumping ground for unwanted chickens. Once the chickens were dumped they were park property and the locals didn’t mind the eccentric additions at all. No one looked after the chickens, but they got on surprisingly well.
As the years went by we visited the park regularly. Signs were added to warn people not to dump off chickens or they’d be fined. They were also excluded from snatching the existing chickens. The hope was that the chickens would eventually run their course and the park would go back to normal.
It did not.
Instead the menagerie grew. Peacocks cropped up occasionally, turkeys; and one visit we saw guinea fowl. But there were always chickens. Eventually feed dispenser were installed so park goers could pay a quarter to enjoy the motley flocks.
Because we’d moved into a house with land my mom started up a chicken coop and we got our very own chickens at the feed store like proper folks. The first rooster we had was a gentleman, politely clucking at us when came into the coop, but the second proved troublesome a year later. He either adored or hated me. Every time I entered the coop he’d dance and flounce and brandish his spurs.
My mom didn’t want to off him frankly she didn’t know how at that point but his fascination ended with him flying at me and the rooster was sentenced to banishment.
We drove to the park.
We saw him there for years afterward, clucking dutifully around a small flock of hens. He did pretty well in exile.
Anyone who’s kept chickens knows that eventually there’s always a tragedy. Ours happened when a neighbors dog broke into our coop and slaughtered the flock. I was absolutely distraught, my lovingly hand reared chicks all decimated in a flurry of senseless bloodlust. I have not loved a chicken since. They are too fragile to bear it.
After a few days of mourning my mom offered that she knew where to find some more chickens. To make up for the massacre she planned a night raid with us. We stayed up past our bedtime and drove to the park with tarp covered kennels in the back of the truck.
We crept down along the gravel parking lot, looking up into the trees, spotting the telltale lumps of shadows that meant chickens. We quickly developed a strategy. We picked a chicken branch, creeping close underneath. Then we reached the end of the branch and gave it a good shake until the roosting chicken glided down to the ground in confusion. It was easy to scoop them up and we went home the proud new owner of a handsome flock of chickens.
The Take a Chicken Leave a Chicken park is still a beloved feature of its neighborhood to this day.
shakespeare was ahead of his time
reblog if baby don’t hurt me just played in your head in perfect tonality
got another code red moment for us... :/
Federal Register :: Request Access
please actually reblog this post this time, as this one will gut national parks for more fucking paper. we have 14 days to stop it, giving us literally no time to do so.
they are literally betting on us to not do anything about it, because they're that desperate on keeping control, and ruining lives for everyone, but themselves.
The proposed rule would rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule (2001 Roadless Rule) (66 FR 3244, 36 CFR Subpart B (2001)), which prohibits road construction, road reconstruction, and timber harvesting in inventoried roadless areas, with limited exceptions.
due to factors such as "time pressure" and "tulle is of the devil" my expectations for this shirt are not high. but i spent a lot of time imagining these button bands and they turned out pretty nice
progress on this includes:
attached the back and the yoke; did the yoke with wonky little panels for reinforcement(?), as it's not double-layered, and for a fun symmetrical piecing moment
attached fronts to back at shoulders (not pictured)
constructed a collar and collar stand and arranged Leafs upon it
started hand stitching down leafs. it would be more elegant to do this before assembling the collar, but i can't visualize how both the seam allowances and the crease in the collar work + the tulle is itchy if misplaced
have yet to do sleeves, side seams, finishing hand stitching on collar, attaching collar, sleeve plackets (on tulle??), cuffs, Buttonholes (evil to me)
Shirt's done except for finishing the collar handstitching & touching up some of the buttonholes (used a friend's fancy machine with varying success). Lots of things wrong with it that are hard to see from more than three feet away
No pictures of it on me because I have yet to obtain a suitable layering piece which is a really funny problem to have!
buttons!!!!!!
Finished the collar! If you want to make embroidery you cut out of some tulle look like it is On There For Real this is what I did
roughly cut out and place embroidery. baste with glue stick (glue sticks to the back of the embroidery and not the tulle)
tack it down with a color matched running stitch (or whatever) along the stems and centers
cut off more tulle from the edges with tinier scissors
tack down the edges. with, in this case, a different thread color, do a faux chain stitch where you grab the very end of a stitch from the extant embroidery
like so
this has the benefit of kind of squashing down any tulle that didn't get trimmed
and now it moves with the fabric and doesn't stick up at the edges!
hey great news. i look charming in it

We live in the dumbest, lamest cyberpunk dystopia possible.
So LA has been — and continues to — protest against ICE. These protests haven’t gotten any smaller or lost any momentum, but social media wasn’t reflecting it.
TikTok users, realizing that the platform/other social media are censoring/deleting/shadowbanning these protest videos, decided to find a workaround.
They’re calling it the LA Music Festival. Ice detention centers and other protest locations are “stages.” The hottest band is Rage Against the Machine. “Here’s what gear you should be bringing to stay safe at the LA Music Festival.”
And it fucking worked.
TikTok has become a proving ground for a lot of new music, meaning lots of labels and organizations have lucrative deals with TikTok to promote their new artists and music festivals. So they absolutely cannot censor the words “music festival” or train the algorithm to ignore it, or they risk endangering that very important revenue.
So now protest videos are flooding feeds again, but it’s the LA 24/7 Music Festival. Truly an incredible timeline we’ve landed in.
During the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s, radio broadcasts would refer to upcoming marches as "parties" and use other such euphemisms to sneak calls to organize past censors.
This is, frankly, a timeless strategy, just done online.
if you're in the throes of cosmic despair i cannot recommend museums enough. art or science or history it doesn't matter. oh we're all connected, all of us and everything, throughout all time and space, and no one, no one, no one is alone? awesome. that's what i thought i just wanted to make sure.
If you are in th USA and on SNAP and can't afford museum prices, check out Museums For All, which offers free or reduced admission to a LOT of museums, zoos, etc. to families on SNAP.
PLEASE use this service. People using it helps make sure funding for it remains available!
It reduced our cost getting into our local INCREDIBLE art museum from $30 to $1. We still had to pay for the special traveling exhibit, but the reduced price meant we COULD see the traveling exhibit!!!
And spread this link as often as you can. Email it to friends on SNAP right now. It is so important that lower income people get to see things like animals and art, too. It should not be limited to the rich. Thanks to this program, in many places, it isn't.
Go! Go go go!
In Toronto, the public library system has museum and art gallery passes through a program called MAP.
Wherever you are, if you need help to access a cultural institution ASK THEM.
