More of you need to learn about these âď¸
I met Alex Hirsch today and he drew a little picture in my sketchbook
Very generally speaking, when you see a black man in a piece of media, be it tv show, movie, video game, etc. thereâs something you often see a lot of writers do. To go against the stereotype of black men (and black people in general) being dumb and lazy, youâll see this black male character being smart and an achiever. ďżź
The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticďżźism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. Theyâll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.
Now, I donât have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we arenât all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesnât listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.
And again I must say that Black people, not being a monolith, there are no hard fast rules to being Black. Iâm more than sure there are Black people like what Iâve described above, Iâm not saying itâs impossible; what Iâm getting at is that the only Black Nerd we see. There are Black Nerds that play basketball, that bump Kendrick Lamar, and use AAVE since itâs an ever changing dialect. Iâm just saying thereâs no one way of being a nerd and no one way of being Black.
Well @dumbey, seems weâre in similar boats
This ainât about him, this is about Black/Asian solidarity. Focus.

do you ever tell people youâll be going to sleep but then you donât and you have to not do anything noticable online for the sake of it seeming as if you didnât lie to them
the last time i got sloppy with this @tinynaught Columboâd me
this post is classic tumblr in a lot of ways but the one I appreciate the most is that the second post happened eleven years after the first one. one of these days Iâm going to see a reply to a post by someone younger than the post itself and weâre all just going to have to deal with it
@supreme-leader-stoat raises a good point.
this is what healthcare is like as a disabled person
[Video description: Gritty is turning the crank on a flagpole to raise the Progress Pride Flag. He gesticulates angrily that the flag is not blowing in the wind, then gestures offscreen. The flag begins blowing. As Gritty begins raising the flag more, the camera pans out to show a man in a suit and sunglasses, looking like a stern Secret Service agent, is holding a leafblower that points at the flag. End description.]

i truly think that this recent trend of âif you relate to a post about a different identity than your own you are ~derailing~ and taking over the conversationâ is incredibly harmful.
i recently experienced some pretty severe transphobic abuse in my workplace (childrenâs home) that included having food thrown at me, being called slurs, being told i was a pervert because i am trans. one of the managers talked with me afterwards and shared that he had had a similar experience as an Asian man. this wasnât him derailing my experience, or talking over me, or making things about himself. he was communicating âhey, i know how it feels and how much it sucks. youâre not alone.â
THAT is what solidarity IS. i donât know what itâs like to be Asian, he doesnt know what itâs like to be trans, but we both had a similar experience and we were able to turn a horrible experience into an opportunity for bonding and comfort.
stop looking at peopleâs attempts as solidarity as an attack. and hey, you never know - you could find an opportunity to grow closer to other people.

ok so I looked it up, and it turns out they made a track out of PVC pipes, down a hill. The owner didn't realise PVC expanded in the heat, so on a turn the track just fell apart and the dude inside went over a fucking free way and into a swamp.
The funniest part is that the inspector was watching the whole time, and once the ball stopped he left without saying anything. Park management just shut it down then and there.
"The ball cleared a small hill, briefly going airborne, then zipped right across Route 94, the two-lane road splitting the park. Cars honked and slammed on their brakes. If there had been opposing traffic, Frank would have become part of a real-life game of Pong, volleying from one bumper to another.
Still in pursuit, we followed the ball toward a small lake in Motor World that had been earmarked for a fleet of tiny bumper boats for children. The area wasnât open yet, but the empty boats were being tested and floated on the surface. The ball soared over the grass and smashed into several of them, scattering the others with rippling waves from the impact, which launched some of the boats several feet in the air.
Charlie and Ken waded into the water looking for the hatch. After some difficulty, they got it open. Charlie pulled Frank out by grabbing him under his armpits like a baby. Frank crawled up the bank, coughing and sputtering. He splayed across the grass as we all stared at the ball, which bobbed in the water like it was attached to a fishing lure.
We did not ask for the inspectorâs report, nor did we ever hear of one being filed. Ken Bailey returned to Canada. The snow-makers cleared away the PVC. Told to dispose of the Bailey Ball, they rolled it into the woods, where it remained for many years."
I don't know that this beats the teeth story, but it's pretty great.
Speaking of PCOS getting renamed, letâs take a moment to celebrate that medical scientists are actually allowed to change the names of their discoveries, because paleontologists canât fucking relate.
Sorry, why did you name this whale âKing Lizardâ? They thought it was a reptile when they first discovered it? Ok well canât you change it? No?
Hey why is this clade called âFalse Crocodilesâ when it contains all crocodiles? Oh, it used to be classified differently and only included an offshoot of crocodile-like animals, but now it includes the entire crocodile branch of the archosaur family tree? So, now all crocodiles are false crocodiles? Uh huh. ok. great.

Some thoughts posted on our bsky yesterday that I think are relevant to share here as well. Please talk about the things you like!
If you've got a reddit account talk about games you like on r/rpg. They hate self promo over there but love hearing about new games.
Also QRT self promo posts with your own opinions / pitch.
Also also, play the games! It's fun and shares the experience of new games
Got more sales from one person on tumblr talking earnestly about what they liked about valiant quest than I ever got through me actively attempting to push the game and 'self promote' which mostly just made me feel like an intruder and a garbage capitalist no matter how unintrusive I tried to be about it.
This will never stop giving me anxiety.
hi i once downloaded a game off of itch.io called 7 Groves and it was so good and i wish i could play something else that made me feel the way i felt when playing 7 Groves
âBecause the truth is, tech doesnât have an image problem. It doesnât have a message problem. It has an intention problem. Whatâs wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasnât successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. Whatâs wrong is that heâs trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product thatâs designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isnât that you havenât told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.â
