A gift would be nice
Teach your children to respect animals and the world around them. Teach them that nature isn't their toy and that their actions have consequences. Teach them compassion for other beings and creatures.
A lot of people on this post are focusing on pets, which is fair but not what I intended. Any decent pet owner would teach their children how to respect their pets, their dogs and cats and the like, but pretty much everyone neglects lessons about other animals and nature in general.
Teach your kids that:
nests are important and that they need to be left untouched and undisturbed
they should NEVER take an animal that they find outside and that if they find an injured animal, they should give it space and find an adult to help
wild animals in general need a wide berth and that ANY animal can be dangerous if it feels threatened
wild animals are not pets under any circumstances
it's kinder and very easy to catch and release bugs outside instead of killing them
all bugs are important, even spiders and wasps and other scary ones
everything in nature has a job in general, and everything has a role to fill
something being scary or creepy does not mean it deserves to die
Let other living beings have autonomy. They're living their own lives, doing their own thing. There's no reason to disrupt them. If your paths cross, let them be. If you have to have to interact, then any interact should happen with the least amount of harm possible (which also includes stress).
I found a book that teaches just that

[Image Description:
A tiktok screen shot of someone reading. There's text that reads, "if you enjoy these videos with large blocks of text, you might also enjoy books. Books usually feature many of these compiled and bound together. The library has over 6 million books."

I suggest using your local library!
I always grab my books from the local library
The great thing about learning to cook from kids’ cookbooks is that the recipes are easy for a beginner to follow, the authors assume you have no experience and therefore explain everything, each dish has pictures, there are no ads, and no long loading times.
The downside is that you as a single grown-ass adult have to walk up to the library desk and ask for the Sesame Street Cookbook.
Some of my favorite “grownup” books have recipes in them but none of them are as fun as rubber duckie floats.
I have a TikTok page now for those who use it!

Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book. It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
there’s a timeskip
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire there’s a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyone’s hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and they’re still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THERE’S AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOT’S CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVEN’T READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DON’T REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick
yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.

Title: A Dark And Stormy Tea
Author: Laura Childs
Summary: Tragedy strikes close to home for Theodosia Browning when the daughter of her best friend Lois is brutally murdered seemingly by a serial killer resurging after a long period of absence. The suspects seem plenty but will Theodosia be able to bring the killer to justice or will she meet the same grizzly fate?
Rating: 10/10
Thoughts: As usual Miss Childs provides compelling story complimented by a bevy of solid suspects and a memorable twist followed up by delicious recipes and entertaining tea ideas.
Recipe: Cinnamon Coffee Cake
CAKE
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. cinnamon
½ cup milk
½ cup sugar
½ tsp. salt
4 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 egg
TOPPING

Title: Agony of the leaves A tea shop mystery
Author: Laura Childs
Summary: When Theodosia Browning’s ex-boyfriend, Parker Skully turns up dead of an apparent drowning in a fish tank. It seems like a tragic accident until defensive wounds on the hands open up a wide net of suspects from his girlfriend, Shelby McCowley, to socialite, Peaches Pafford. Will Theodosia be able to net her ex-boyfriend‘s killer? Or will she be left without that prize catch?
Rating: 10/10
Thoughts: I found the mystery engaging, the twist rather solid, and the inclusion of recipes delightful. All in all delightful especially paired with a nice cup of oolong or Earl Grey.
In lieu of a quote I will provide a recipe from the book
Honeybee Scones
2 cups flour
¼ cup sugar
½ tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. baking powder
6 Ibsp. butter, softened
1 egg
¼ cup milk
2 Tbsp. honey
PREHEAT the oven to 400 degrees F. Sift the dry ingredients together, then cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. Mix the egg, milk, and honey, then stir into the four mixture. Knead gently on a floured surface and pat into a 9-inch circle. Cut into wedges and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until golden.
Brush the tops of the scones with more honey while still hot.
And historians will call them “Bosom friends”
kicking a hornets nest.
I create and I destroy , I live through countless cycles , wander through numerous realms , befriend many and make foes multiple....I am both the reader and the writer .
( i might also be a lil dramatic)

PSA TO ALL READERS while wandering around a mall today I was ensnared by a powerful force that bade me enter a place called Barnes & Noble. in a daze I wandered the displays and was compelled to even pick up several books that this force attempted to foist upon me at great personal cost to myself. it was only through great strength of will that I was able to fight off this befouling force by withdrawing my cellular device from my pocket and logging into my library account to place requests for the same books at no cost that i was able to escape without grievous harm. truly it's crazy out there, stay safe and remember that libraries are always there to provide aid as you fight against such forces of darkness
The absolute worst reader experience is opening a book you're excited about and finding an AI disclaimer in the first few pages informing you the author used AI "to make it flow better".
I tried reading the first chapter just because I already have the book, but the punctuation and formatting are terrible and the allegories used are exhausting, repetitive and condescending.
It sucks because I was excited about the premise of this book and the reviews were great, but it's just another instance of a potentially well-intentioned project being tainted by genAI because the author couldn't be bothered to hire an editor and proofreader.
