It's also important to remember that the military is huge. The DOD in its 2024 demographics report had 1.3 million active duty personnel. Spending $103.7 million on "meat, poultry, and fish" means that the DOD spent $80 per active duty soldier on that stuff and $16.6 million on Ribeye steak is $12.77 per active duty soldier (I know that they probably didn't actually buy a ribeye steak for every soldier, but it's just to put things in some perspective).

yup it’s always the “oh you’re just not into history” and the response of “yes i am im just into ancient history” and you’re ready to throw 38 greek myths at them just to shut them up about the kinds of bombers the britsh were using in the second world war

except like. they really dont give a single fuck about wwi/ii. they care about the weapons and machinery. do they care about the events and the people? do they care about why wars were actually important? in my experience, very, very rarely.

I think that gets to heart of it: they’re not history buffs in any real sense. What they are is war fanboys. They collect and curate technical information about wars just like any other fanboy collects and curates technical information about the subject of their fandom. It’s basically not real to them; knowing what exact metal the buttons of SS uniforms were made of is of no greater significance to them than knowing the exact height of the captain’s chair on the starship Enterprise - it’s just another shiny technical fact for their collection.

It’s incredibly annoying because WW1 and WW2 are actually really interesting in terms of how politics changed and the like but all people want to talk about is the fighting. :/

While I can understand the annoyance with guys who claim to be into history but are actually into the weapons and vehicles I also feel like a lot of the replies here boil down to “I’m angry because they don’t play the way I approve of”. These guys just prefer a different aspect and approach it in a different way than you do. Just have your fun and let them have theirs.

I think I’ve said this before but as An Autistic™ I don’t even give a fuck about special interests, everyone is allowed to be interested in whatever the goddamn fuck they want, and you can be buttmad about it of you want but it’s your fucking problem, not a flaw of theirs.

It is really hard to take environmentalists seriously when they're this obviously using environmentalism as a trojan horse for communism. If environmental collapse were considered a serious threat by them they'd be primarily concerned with stopping it in politically agreeable ways and instead this guy is acting like communism is going to magically solve environmental issues.

We're a little past this era but when people were like "actually being more conscious of the political implications of blah blah blah could let you take this in a more interesting direction!", this was generally true but it was kind of sleight-of-handing away that (1) you can make pretty much any genre fiction more interesting by adding more sophisticated political reflections but (2) if you want this to be possible, you have to allow the reflections in question to take forms other than pure party-line tumblr leftist propaganda, i.e. your evaluative criteria have to be "apolitical". Which is to say that people who demand that you "think about the political implications of XYZ" are distinctive not in that they want you to think about politics but in that they want to stop you from thinking about politics, since "thinking" creates the possibility of an outcome not in conformance with the party platform. This also goes for any subset of "politics", i.e. "this would be better if you thought more about race", "this would be better if you thought more about homophobia", etc.

This is also the source for the "keep politics out of X" lines that were mocked/called hypocritical. People knew that they were being preached at for political propaganda but they didn't have the vocabulary to express the idea that they didn't want to be preached at.

Aetherdrift was partially initially conceived as those, but it was also conceived as "the vehicles set". However, nowadays the worldbuilding team and the card design team work much more closely together than they do in the past so the distinction between top-down and bottom up are much muddier.

Nurgle on his own is green/black. But Chaos as a whole being Grixis fits very well. The way a faction is expressed is different from the way that faction's subfactions should be expressed. When you're at a low resolution (Warhammer 40k as a whole) then getting into the nitty gritty of each god's colors doesn't make sense. But when you're zoomed in looking at a smaller part of things it's different. If you were to make a Warhammer 40k Forces of Chaos set of Commander decks you'd definitely have Nurgle as GB, Slaanesh as RB, Tzeentch as RU and Khorne as RG or maybe mono-R. But when zoomed out the way the 40k decks we got were you don't have the cards to be having these nuanced depictions of the subfactions of various groups.
