I do think itās interesting how the novel Dracula is meant to be a modern setting from its perspective. Itās very much that genre of story about an ancient fantasy archetype finding itself in a modern setting, complete with the rules-lawyering that often comes with modern parodies (that isnāt to say the stories of Olde didnāt have fun with loopholes either though).
Except Dracula is a story that plays itself straight. The vampire himself is not stupid. Heās possibly the oldest vampire of all which means he upgraded from animal instinct and mindless echoes of past memories to someone whoās regained his critical thinking skills. The story begins because heās already adapted to how the modern world works now by hiring a solicitor who understands modern laws.
He knows now that he doesnāt have to march into London with an army like he used to; He can just buy property and the laws of London are forced to respect that. Similarly heās already experimented in and discovered loopholes to vampire rules and limitations; Vampires are bound by the permission of owners so he simply uses his solicitor to buy and own a bunch of properties. If he needs to be invited in, Dracula hypnotizes someone to let him in.
Vampires need to return to their grave every dusk/dawn (whichever comes sooner), which causes their coffin to act as an anchor that limits how far from it they can travel? Dracula simply rations the earth of his grave into fifty coffins and spreads them across London so his range becomes exponentially larger.
All of these things make the story almost come across as a deconstruction and it might just be! Itās just that Dracula the novel became such a trendsetter that people nowadays see it as playing things fully straight. It almost feels as if the novel is written with the idea that readers have a basic understanding of vampires and their rules, so part of the thrill comes in the revelation of how the titular vampire is working around these rules. Likewise Iāve heard it used to be a trope in English literature for a traveler to visit some foreign land with a monster and escape by going home. But here the foreign aspect of the story is just the first (and final) arc; The monsterās plan hinges on coming to the UK itself!
So yeah. Dracula isnāt stupid and he reflects the idea that people of the past had just as common sense as the rest of us, they just had access to less/inaccurate knowledge and things worked differently back then. Dracula would be likeā¦ That bit of someone showing a medieval peasant a meme as they comprehend it perfectly and arenāt even wowed by the Doritos. If Dracula was set in the 21st century heād probably understand social media well enough to become an influencer if he wanted to, though the issue of being invisible in cameras wouldnāt help.
saw a post on bluesky about reimagining The Iliad as a mecha war and that idea goes unbelievably hard. achilles in his legally distinct gundam cutting through dozens of enemy suits. aggamemnon in his gold-plated mech. paris using a long range sniper rifle to exploit a design flaw in achilles' armor. the gods are all various megacorps who have a stake in the war bc it'll impact their profits.

what about a shapeshifter whoās bad at it. shapeshifter who can never quite get the nose right. shapeshifter who always makes flipped faces because theyāre doing adjustments in the mirror. shapeshifter with same face syndrome. shapeshifter who always dips further into the uncanny valley than they want. shapeshifter who can mimic a single celebrity completely perfectly but struggles to recreate anyone else.

I think the worst part about exploring my own identity is that there is almost no one in my life who would be able to practice aspects of that with other people, in a space where I could hear it and decide if itās good
Being physically strong does kinda mess with your head when you have health problems I think. Like you know that logically your muscle mass isnāt gonna stop you from having a sleep disorder or asthma or whatever but when it happens anyways youāre like damn life really doesnāt work like comic books huh? Frankly I am disappointed.
I want more aromantic characters who are not also asexual !!! I want more characters who 100 percent want to get it on but just donāt feel any romantic feelings for anyone. I want more aromantic characters with āfriends with benefitsā except itās literally just that. Thatās their best friend and sometimes they let them fuck. More aromantic characters please !!!!

I have transmasc friends, but no other binary trans male people around me. I mean they could just be hiding their identity in the same way that I do, but itās sad feeing like Iām not ābeing trans correctlyā because nowhere I look shows me men like me
I donāt want like a carbon copy of myself of course, just someone to discuss a similar experience to mine. I want to talk to him about what itās like to be viewed inherently as a predator by our own community, or how that fear of us is weaponized into āprotectionā for less-marginalized groups. I want to chat about finding clothing, getting medicine, our transitions.

In my fallout 4 achievement hunting im basically forced to play through the game from a fresh start three different times at minimum and for the institute and brotherhood endings i did my usual pistols and punching character which was starting to get a little stale.
so to mix things up for my minuteman character I decided to make a sniper because Iāve never done that before and man this playstyle makes the game feel completely different. I feel like, nervous. Iām holding my breath in real life.
Usually Iām all berserker get right in there yolo punch it real hard take drugs to brute force it but with a sniper youāve gotta like. Plan somewhat. Crazy. Iām spending so much time trying to find the high ground and waiting for the weather to clear up so I can see.
Funny thing about those goofy looking minuteman laser muskets that you need to crank up is that they can make really good sniper rifles if you upgrade them.
My enemies donāt see me coming, and sometimes I donāt see them coming either because Iām looking through a telescope and I donāt see the giant scorpion right next to me
