Every version of dwarves has them being almost constantly armoured, and living in huge fortresses and underground tunnels, usually with some super-dramatic main gate that’s twenty feet high and about three feet thick.
What if there’s a reason for that? Like, they weren’t always a race of warriors and miners who almost never showed themselves above ground?
What if they’re the fantasy equivalent of those survivalists who turn their basement into a bomb shelter and fill the place with guns and canned food because they’re totally convinced The End Is Nigh?
What about a setting where the dwarves used to be perfectly happy above ground, growing flowers and getting a tan, until some huge disaster happened, and they all went Fuck This. So they dug down and hid away until the zombie horde or magical plague or the horde of rabid squirrels or whatever had passed, but they never forgot, and now their entire species is like “Constant Vigilance!”
There might even be some dwarf cities buried so deep they never heard the disaster ended. A whole city-fortress of paranoid, armed to the teeth dwarves, ready to kick the shit out of anything that isn’t a dwarf.

Hello! Ah man, I do too! I’ve never DMed before, but I’m putting things together for a campaign I wanna run at some point down the line. I don’t have much experience with homebrewing, but I’m always up for tossing ideas around!

I love him so much okay. Grog’s been my favorite pretty much since day one. I’ve always loved bruisers who have a slightly squishy center. The development he’s gone through has been amazing, which is honestly one of my favorite things. Cause if this was a tv show or something, Grog would just be the comic relief side character and we probably wouldn’t ever get to see that growth, but Matt and Travis have done such a great job letting him grow and change. He’s just so great okay. I love my goliath son

I don’t know if it’s unpopular, but I’d kinda like to have it at least noted that his alignment seems to be headed more toward Chaotic Good??? Cause, idk, he’s come so far and I feel like acknowledging that with a nudge of alignment would be really cool

let him smooch Vax I want more backstory with him and Pike growing up in Westruun. I want all the growing up shenanigans. Going forward, I’d really like for him and Pike to have some kinda big adventure

Gosh, I dunno. Probably around the first time I watched the fight with Earthbreaker Groon. Back then it was kind of a jokey thing, like haha what if, but then the feels got real and here I am
my thoughts:
Okay, okay, I know it’s not gonna be canon, like I get that. But it would be great okay? I love their dynamic, and just every new interaction makes me love it more (spoilers: but that talk in the most recent episode made me tear up, it was so great) It’s a fun ship, and I’m in too deep now
What makes me happy about them:
Man just, every interaction is gold. They’re sooooo different, and that’s caused some friction (which was fun in other ways) but I feel like they’ve kinda turned a corner and they’re in a good spot now. They’re solid bros if nothing else, although I love that there’s just little jokes about something more~*~ in there (I will take what I can get, give me every lil tease of Grog’ildan pls) I also just love both of them on their own so much. Vax’s a disaster, and I have a thing for trash children with father issues, so he’s pretty much my type just to begin with. And Grog is my favorite forever. I’m so proud of him okay. He’s come so far and grown so much and I’m just gonna go cry about my giant son for a while k bye
What makes me sad about them:
There’s like happy sads for the emotional moments, but I mean other than the fact that it’s literally never gonna happen, I’m pretty much okay. It makes me sad that it’s an underrated ship, but I could say that about pretty much all my cr rarepairs tbh

It’s a bit like dating the sun, Keyleth thinks. Pike is bright and warm and so full of life. She loves her gloomy boys, but it’s nice holding hands with a sunbeam.
Their cramped little apartment always seems warmer (bigger, brighter, better) when Pike’s around. Everyone laughs a little louder and smiles a little easier. It’s enough just to sit next to her, to rest her head against Pike’s.
They’re all busy lately, but she makes sure to stop by the hospital or the temple at least once a week. People always need Pike. That’s alright though, everyone needs the sun. If anything, it makes it more special when Pike gives her that smile, the one meant just for her, when Keyleth turns up, flowers in hand.
Dating is sort of weird. She’s heard most people usually only date one person at once. That seems sad. But maybe most people haven’t found the right other people to date yet. Kash usually just wants to go somewhere quiet to get a drink. The twins always want to try something new, which is fun, though sometimes a little much. Pike is a little more subtle.
It took her a month to realize they were going on dates. Pike knows her. Somehow she knows just the right moment for a picnic or a nature walk or a trip to the beach to dip their toes in the waves.
They’re on the beach, sitting on a picnic blanket when she realizes it’s a date. Pike’s head is against her shoulder and their fingers are intertwined and the sun is just starting to set and it hits. Keyleth gasps and looks down at Pike, who hears and looks up at her curiously. “Is something wrong?”
“No, I just...” She wants to ask if it’s a date. It feels like one. And... she likes that. A lot. So she shakes her head and smiles. “I just really like going with you. Going out with you. It’s good. I like it.”
And she leans down a little and kisses Pike. That’s less like kissing the sun (she’s pretty sure that would burn). Pike is smiling against her lips and she tastes faintly like cherries and potato chips and it’s not like kissing the sun because it’s so much better.
Pike lets out a happy little hum when she pulls away and snuggles closer. For a minute they just listen to the soft rush of the waves.
“You had no idea this was a date, right?”
“I did not.”
“That’s okay, Kiki.”
“It’s a good date though. Very romantic. I like it.”
“I like you.”
Keyleth can’t stop smiling so she smooshes her face into Pike’s hair and mumbles the words back again and again as she giggles. Pike giggles back and then gets up to pull Keyleth to her feet. They spend a few more hours on the beach, playing in the shallows.
Dating Pike is better than dating the sun, Keyleth decides. Because Pike doesn’t go away at the end of the day. Because Pike fits in her arms just right. Because Pike keeps her warm and doesn’t burn. And she’s pretty sure the sun would be terrible at planning dates.
It’s difficult trying to get a good look at the handprint on his back. Scanlan’s mansion is equipped with dozens of mirrors at least, so it’s not too hard to find one in a quiet, empty room. A heavy weight comes off with the deathwalker’s ward. Bare to the waist, Vax puts his back to the mirror and tries to look over his shoulder.
The handprint is still there, the same deep color as Grog’s tattoos. Not the pale, barely there gray of his mother’s words. Still there. Still alive. Seeing the breath come back to the goliath’s chest before was one thing, but this makes it real.
He slumps down, sitting with his back pressed to the wall. Almost absently, he traces the words on the inside of his bicep. The black letters look no different than they did a day before, he’s not sure why he expects them too.
The door opens suddenly and surprisingly quietly given the massive form that steps into the room. For a moment, Grog and Vax both just stare at each other. Grog’s brow furrows. “What’re you doin’ on the floor?”
He doesn’t have a good answer for that, so he turns it back on him. “What are you doing just barging in on people?”
“Thought this was the way to the trainin’ room. Must’ve got turned around,” Grog says, scratching his head. “Swear this place’s different everytime Scanlan poofs it up.”
Grog turns to go and Vax is on his feet without thinking. “Wait.”
Stopping, Grog turns back to look at him, decidedly unimpressed. Vax approaches almost cautiously. There’s no new scars on Grog’s form. It sees wrong somehow, there’s no evidence it happened, no proof that he was just gone.
“Don’t hit me for this, big man,” he says, the only warning he gives before wrapping his arms around Grog’s middle and burying his face in a massive (warm, living, moving) chest.
There’s some vague unhappy noises that rumble in Grog’s chest, but, to Vax’s immense surprise, he’s not forced away. After a moment there’s a sigh and a large hand awkwardly pats his head. “Don’t go gettin’ all mushy on me. ‘m fine now. Could’ve at least gotten dressed first, you’re makin’ this weird.”
“Am not,” Vax says, or tries to. It comes out a little muffled and he can almost hear Grog roll his eyes. Pulling back a little, he fixes a stern expression on his face and jabs a finger into Grog’s chest. “Don’t you do that again, alright?”
“Yeah, yeah, no more talkin’ swords, I get the idea.”
“Not that. The dying bit, you’re not allowed to do that again.”
Grog opens his mouth, probably to protest and say something about the dragons or whatever, but Vax cuts him off. “I mean it, Grog. Never again, you hear me?”
It looks like Grog’s still about to argue for a moment before his shoulders slump ever so slightly. “Alright. No more dyin’.”
“Good.”
Vax isn’t sure where to go from there. Grog solves the problem for him and pushes him away by the shoulders (surprisingly gently). But he doesn’t leave. Instead he holds out one hand. “That goes for you too. No dyin’.”
It takes a second for it to click and then a little smile slides onto Vax’s face as he nods. “That’s a deal, big man.”
“Then shake on it.”
“I’d rather kiss on it.”
“Wha--” And that’s all Grog gets out before Vax jumps up and plants one on him before darting around him and down the hallway, grinning madly. He’s pretty sure he’s going to get a pummeling for that later, but for now, things feel almost right again. And he can live with that.

Even with her family’s money, Cassandra has always known that there are things (and people) she cannot have.
When she was young, she would watch her mother and Vesper practice with swords and then beg for one of her own. Her father’s gentle hand would smooth back her head, a kind smile on his face as he said she was too young for that sort of thing.
Their swords sit unused now. She can’t bring herself to pick them up. The dagger at her hip works just as well.
When the twins were given a pair of rabbits as a birthday present, she quietly asked for a pet of her own. Her mother sighed a refusal. She was far too young for that sort of responsibility. Taking care of a pet is an awfully big job.
Someone must have freed the rabbits before it all went wrong. She finds one a few months later. The poor thing is starved and half wild, but she leaves food out for it and gentles it again. Taking care of a rabbit turns out to be rather simple compared to an entire city.
She starts to think she cannot have a family when Percy disappears and she awakes to find him long gone. It seems she cannot have a home either, or at least not something that feels like one. Then both return and it’s hard to be sure just how to feel.
It seems Percy has found himself a new family while he’s been away. Cassandra tries not to be jealous. At first that’s easy. There’s so much else to deal with and think about that her mind barely has time to wander back to Percy’s friends. But they come back again and again. They help where they can, and Cassandra gets the strangest sense that they’re trying to pull her into whatever it is they’ve become.
The pieces don’t quite fit together, but they all try. She finds herself feeling a little out of place at the end of a long table, watching with a slightly confused smile as some of them talk the kitchen staff into arm wrestling matches.
“They’re a bit much aren’t they?” Cassandra blinks in slight surprise as one of the twins materializes on the bench beside her. Vex, she’s pretty sure that’s her name, smiles warmly, though there’s something in her eyes that Cassandra can’t quite read. “Don’t worry, darling, you’ll get used to them.”
There’s a burst of cheering from a bit further down the table and Grog picks up Pike and then does a lap around the room letting out some sort of war cry. Cassandra laughs half out of disbelief and shakes her head. “I don’t know if you can get used to that. But it’s not bad. I think Whitestone could do with a bit more of... whatever it is they’re doing.”
Vex seems to like that response, her eyes softening ever so slightly. “Yes, I think this place could do with a little more laughter. I don’t think I’ve heard you laugh before. It’s nice.”
“Oh.” Cassandra glances into the depths of the mug in front of her, trying to will her face not to redden, glad for the hair that’s slipped free of her bun that falls to cover her expression. “Thank you, you’re too kind.”
She manages not to flinch when Vex gently tucks a long strand of hair back behind her ear. “Aren’t you just the dearest thing? We ought to come back here more often.”
They talk for a bit and Cassandra finds herself laughing and smiling more than she’s thought possible the last few years. Eventually Vex gets up, blowing her a kiss before she wanders down the table to loop her arms around Percy’s shoulders. Taking a breath, Cassandra looks away as Vex kisses her brother’s cheek. She finishes her drink and quietly excuses herself, coating her heart in iron as she casts one more look Vex’s way.
She can’t begrudge Percy this happiness he’s found. Head held high, she returns to room and her rabbit. Maybe she can’t have this, but at least watching from afar is not quite so painful as having it all torn away. It doesn’t hurt quite so bad when she closes her eyes and pictures Vex’s smile.
